GM did a few things right with this engine, compact, efficient, powerful and cheap. At the time I couldn't believe they produced a new pushrod engine, especially after producing a quad cam small block for the Corvette, but I now see why they did. There are a lot of haters out there though, but there is a reason it is the most commonly swapped engine today. I am actually not biased to any brands, engines, etc. I can appreciate each of them for their strengths, all brands do something well.

bring it on. They are harder the first time, if they are in bad condition. If everything is in good condition, it actually doesn't change. Don't forget we have minimum of 10T to play with here. I have to be careful demonstrating the power steering pulley, because after removing 20+ times it does get harder as it seems to gall up. So I actually need to lubricate it. If I don't, I'll get it on, but rip the front of the pulley apart trying to get it off.

neat tool, but I see one, glaring problem. Hydraulics would make it very easy to try to force a bad part onto the crank and that would pull out the threads on the crank..... part of the reason to use hand tools is if the balancer is improperly machined, you'll feel it .... maybe some kind of bypass or limiter so you don't put 100 tons on the threads... given manufacturer's hidden chinese parts - that happens way too often even with high-end parts.
@mechanicsmateau
@mechanicsmateau 6 жыл бұрын
Good point. I like to use a pressure gauge especially when using the air/hydraulic, electric or battery pumps. This way you can tell very quickly if something is not right. If using a hand pump you can feel if there is a problem. You can imagine, I have done this may times. You do get a fell for it, just like you do swinging on the end of hand tools.

As with anything you can't make things fool proof. There is always a risk when you attempt to speed up a process that things will go sideways. It would be interesting to see how much you could pull on those threads before they let go. They are usually pretty healthy fasteners, I would think even with the hyd. setup and some common sense one would know something was amiss long before anything broke.

Mechanics Mate these parts are notoriously difficult to remove and install correctly. This is because they are press fitted into the engine block behind the harmonic balancer. Modern engines typically require specialized tools to remove the tightly fitted seal given the limited space constraints of the engine bay. I work primarily with BMWs and in my experience there are very few tool manufacturers how provide a all-in-one solution for BMW. Those that do charge an astonishing amount for their tools upwards of $500 US. Even SnapOn falls short for delivering an easy to use solution for this common repair. If you want to research further I recommend looking at the N52 and N54 and M54 engines are created by BMW
@mechanicsmateau
@mechanicsmateau 6 жыл бұрын
@@ygtcbee23 thanks for the info and reply. I wouldn't use hydraulics to install them as it would destroy the seal and timing cover. To remove, not an issue. I just need to know how far the seal is from the front of the crank, crank OD and seal ID and depth. If you want to install, I would use a sleeve similar to what we used in the video to put the crank sprocket on and some threaded rod in the crank bolt hole and nut to drive it in. Alternatively I could make a sleeve that reaches a hard stop against the timing cover when it is deep enough, that way you could use the hydraulics without destroying the seal. Let me know if you want to pursue this. If you do, contact me either through the website, or Facebook.

@@mechanicsmateau How about an adaptation for pressing ball joints or tie rod ends or control arm bushings? Would be nice if you can do those while still on the car.
@mechanicsmateau
@mechanicsmateau 6 жыл бұрын
@@mikemcorky5418 we have some ball joint attachments, certainly not a complete set. Photos and some measurements would get them under development pretty quickly. Yes, you can do control arm bushings too. I have an accessory sleeve kit we are reselling for this application.

Captured rotors/bearings on old Hondas m, Isuzu, Mitsubishi and such would be a breeze with that! No more knuckle/axle/brakes in the press at once. That engine stand design would obviously make it easier to work on the motor but it's so much safer. I know several graybeard techs missing fingertips from engine stands over-rotating or not being properly locked in place. Brilliant design Mr Milekovic.

If you use this 10 times a year it's worth it. Think of those you can loan it to as well. Axels - suspension parts - stuck shocks [ had a few of them that cost me a lot of skinned knuckles too - also just all round parts puller on anything that comes along. Looks great as a tool for sure.
