I remember accidentally doing it a million times, and always recognized it from heavier music. At one point I really wanted to know how to do it on demand but didn’t know the name of the technique, so I just looked up “metal squealies”... how articulate haha. I ended up finding some video talking about Pitch/ pinch harmonics. In my whole guitar learning journey, some things have come relatively easy or natural: I had no problem with dive bombing and catching the harmonic on the G string, I started bending before I even knew what it was, and fortunately I nailed pinch harmonics really smoothly. These are all tiny victories and they’re all the best parts about learning and playing and creating with guitar!

Ermmm I can do pinch harmonics on the thick strings at the top of the fretboard but not on the light strings on the high frets. Edit: for anyone in a similar plight check out the replies to this comment, some people left very useful advice on improving.

I've found that there are 3 different "pinch locations" so to speak per string, they change a little bit per string and fret. the technique is exactly the same, you just need to move ya picking hand a little closer to the neck or bridge to find them. I've also found you kinda need to "dig in" a little more on the thicker strings but be a bit more gentle on the thinner strings. Hope this makes sense, keep at it man, you'll get it and when you do you'll be grinning like a Cheshire cat :)

Could not agree more! I find pinch harmonics easy in comparison!
@swingonthespiral
@swingonthespiral 5 жыл бұрын
Sweep picking is definitely way more difficult than this. But I find the hardest thing on guitar to be fast shred style playing where every individual note is alternate picked. At least with sweeping the left hand does a good amount of the work, but my right hand sucks so bad that it can never keep up with my left. It's kind of sad. I can hammer on super fast runs but I cant even play a 16th note shred lick at a decent speed.
@Siranonim
@Siranonim 5 жыл бұрын
@@swingonthespiral I feel you. Good coordination is difficult as hell. Add some string skipping and it gets even worse. I've been working on my alternate picking for the last year. There is some improvement but I still find it a bit underwhelming.

Luckily, my grandpa plays guitar, so when I asked him, “How do you play a high note but finger a low note? Like, you play this note, but it sounds like this note?” He knew what I was talking about and taught me about pinch harmonics. I practiced my pinch harmonics by doing them over and over again on a clean setting, so that I had to hit it exactly right to get a sound.

I started playing day now ying guitar at 4 years old i'm 67 now. but noticed that i was getting pinch harmonics totally by accident way before i knew what it was. or even heard of a pinch harmonic. and could never get it again then i saw you teaching it. i now know exactly how to do it but the nerves in my hands won't allow me to do it because i have irepairable nueropothy in my hands, total nerve damage. dropping my pick most of the time it really sucks! I love the sound of pinch harmonics. So i keep practicing every single day my thumb meat just won't let me hit the strings Maybe God one day will heal me and can master it some day and be as good as you, Zack Wild, dime bag and everybody else! pray for me. thanks. I find the best sounding pinches being those where you actually do it "sloppy" or half-assed. The kind where you get the squeal but it's mixed with the regular string sound. It has a nice effect on the note and creates some interesting harmonic fight between the regular and pinched note. Don't really have an idea how it can happen.

people used to tell me all kinds of crazy things like dragging your thumb across, etc. from like 2005 - to like within the past year, i couldn't really do it... then i just realized "you know how to do a normal, natural harmonic.. & bending... then just do a harmonic, & try to bend it... (same way you always do, just don't push against the wood...) now, i'm like.. oh... so easy... lol. maybe sometimes people try to explain things,especially musical terms too complicated, but then once you realize what it really is, it's so simple... like, it took me years to realize "the tonic" is just the first chord, that you hit you the most... lol. fyi: i do find it helps though with a gain-heavy distortion, flicking my tone switch to 2/5 (or 1/5 all treble heavy) area, than the normal 4/5, more bass / A strings area i used to always leave it, & closer to the end bridge (where you lay your hand when you palm-mute), in contrast to towards the neck, because the strings are tighter / hit harder / it can ring out, where towards the neck is basser, vibrates more, & inherently makes the harmonic slide out for me... (but maybe thats2a strat guy thing, or something. it's different for ever guitar. my sg was easy to p.m. on, for instance.)

*Biggest tip for pinch harmonic beginners* If you don't know what regular harmonics are, know them. Then, figure out you can do regular harmonics in places OVER where your pickups are instead of just over your fretboard. Then *DOING THIS OVER THOSE HARMONICS OVER YOUR PICKUPS* , pick the note with your pick, and in the same motion, clip the string with your thumb. Don't leave your thumb on the string after, only for a fraction of a second. You can also hit the string with your thumb pretty firmly, don't be scared to really dig in. I find doing that on the harmonics over your pickups is the quickest and easiest way to get your first pinch harmonic to ring out. Hope I helped someone! :D

I love doin that. Such a pain to do pinch harmonics tho. U need distortion, and it’s a pain to find them because you gotta remember where you’d mostly get harmonics in the fretboard and if you want to get a harmonic from anywhere on the fretboard, it’s a different way to get it on different frets. This one Tyler is showin us here, is a thick boi. Lol. It’s like a Zakk Wylde style bend. Bending like 4 frets down and shaking the string a little and getting the harmonic to come out in the process it’s a fantastic sound but kinda hard to get

Honestly, I don't know if it's because I learned pinch harmonics on the thick strings or what, but I've always found that pinch harmonics are always easiest on the thickest strings. I've always had more difficulty with pinch harmonics on the higher strings. Might also have something to do with where the actual harmonics are located for the picking hand since I have to move my hand forward for me to activate a pinch harmonic on the high E or B strings. A song that I would recommend for learning the pinch harmonics on the thicker strings (which happens to be the song that used to practice pinch harmonics) is the main riff of Duality by Slipknot. I would also recommend the pre-chorus to Dead Memories, again by Slipknot.

One of the best riffs to master this technique, is to learn the main riff of "Cemetery Gates" by Pantera. Dime is a true Master of those harmonics. If thats too easy, rather switch to "Revolution is my name" by Pantera. Good luck with that one...

To accommodate for up picking, I use the middle finger instead of my thumb for pinching.

As I like the video, what brings a tear to my eye is reminding myself how I've heard these "move your thumb" and did not understand what the hell is it that I am doing wrong, and than it just clicked ... so I guess some tries and it goes .. same goes for the spot you are picking to get the pinch. But yeah ... than I did not get it and felt like and idiot now i can land these pinches anywere at anytime XD

I learned these kinds of pinch harmonics when I was practicing Laid to Rest. I think if you practice you will get it down.

I can even do them on my acoustic guitars. You just slant the pick slightly and kind of dampen the string with your thumb :)

His comments at the beginning make me feel old. The Line 6 Spider 2 was released in 2004. I had already been playing for 15 years at that point. Doesn’t mean I’m really good at it or anything, but I sure have been doing it awhile.

my guitar buddies and i, when we were all metalhead teenagers, referred to pinch harmonics as "qwah's" as in "dude, zakk ripped an insane qwah at the end of the solo".

Ooof this one definitely hits home for me. It's kinda funny, when I first started playing guitar I was obsessed with the stereotypical "All the GAIN" mentality and I used to think I was a god of pinch harmonics just from always having them ring out from sloppy playing and poor picking at unusable high gain settings, but when I actually tried doing it on purpose it never came out right.

Man, I love music, guitar especially. I would love to learn how to play. I don't even know where to start. Seems like there's just so much to it but I guess that's the beauty of it. Maybe I should start by getting a guitar eh? I love this channel already, I might give it a try!

I actually used to struggle with this. A mate showed me how, and I managed to pull it off the first time, and then never again for a LONG time. Until I sat down for it for a couple of hours and just hashed it out by force of will.

I think one important point was missing: imagine your fretboard continues and hit your pick exactly where you would find the note 2 octaves higher. For example if your note is on the 3thrd fret, you should pick where your 27th fret should be. If your note is on 6th fret, than you should pick exactly where 30th fret should be. The hard thing is that this difference is a few milimeters apart. So only a lot of training and muscle memory will make you hit it right. I find it less harder to make with 24.75 scale fretboards than 25.5, not sure why.
