Another great story. The Bluebelles were one of my uncles favorite groups. I agree with you about them being underrated. I grew up hearing their music played in my home and my cities local RNB radio station. One of my aunts was in a group in our city, and they would sing a lot of Labelles 70's songs when they performed. My aunt sang the Sara Dash parts. They were pretty good. My favorite song by LaBelle was Lady Marmalade and What Can I Do For You.

Didn't Nona Hendryx also chart with Transformation in the 80s? Yes, Labelle was definitely an underrated group. I loved the fact that they spanned genres.

I always loved The BlueBells, I just wished that they had better material when they were at their prime. As for the trio LaBelle, those ladies were top notch, as good as it gets for a vocal trio, and I feel that the group Brownstone were possibly influenced greatly by Labelle.

The Bluebelles aren't underrated, in my opinion. The Blubelles were well respected in the 60's, but they were overshadowed by The Supremes. However, The Blubelles finally got their due in the 70's, once they reinvented themselves. And Patti LaBelle went onto superstardom. My favorite song by LaBelle is "Lady Marmalade". My hope is that The Blubelles will make it into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, or at least the R&B Hall of Fame. Their legacy is a historic one!

it's a hard one because we look at them from a 2024 view and we love Patti Labelle....... How ever we have to look at them from a 60s point of view. They were nothing special there were countless numbers of girl groups at that time, and they really only got noticed on the east coast...remember they didn't play soul music even if you were on the top of the charts like they do today racism was still alive, and they only played soul music at midnight in a lot of states. When they became Labelle, they became well known but that was only for a short time. Trust me If Patti Labelle Had Not Become a superstar in the 80s nobody would be searching for The Bluebelles. I remember those time well , you went to the record store to buy Aretha , the Supremes Gladys Knight & the pips, You were not looking For the bluebells. You would find their records and albums At Woolworth 5 & dime store a year after their release because they didn't sell! Just being honest! I'm A big Patti Fan but she wants to shed light on the Bluebelles like they were close to the Supremes and they were so far away from that kind of fame !

While you make some points, I think you misunderstood what is meant by underrated. No doubt they didn't have the commercial success as others but vocally they were on the same level if not beyond that of the Supremes and other girl groups of the time. Having the right management and promotion is a major key to success and they really didn't have either. They relied on live performances which non orher could compete. They were crowned the Sweethearts of the Apollo. That's major and significant in itself. Commercial success doesn't determine talent.
