The situation with Nami trying to help her village is arguably even more emotional in the original series where everyone in the village DOES realize what she's trying to do for them, but they play along and pretend like they don't and pretend to hate her so Nami won't feel like they're all counting on her. That way if she ever decides it's too difficult and wants to just cut and run, she won't feel obligated to stay for them 😭 Also, her sister Nojiko's tattoos were something she got in solidarity with Nami after having the Arlong tattoo forced on her.
@thechatteringclown Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I really don't like that change from how it was in the manga really. It doesn't quite hold the same impact without the context.

It's more tragic in the live action because she has no one. Not even Nojiko knows the truth. But it's more emotional in the manga because everybody knew but they pretended not to know, just in case Nami wants to give up and run forever. Both scenarios are good imo

Amazing acting by Emily Rudd. Nami's backstory is such a tragic one. Her asking Luffy for help, Luffy putting his hat (his treasure) on her head, and the zoom out revealing the whole crew is one of the most iconic moments in anime, and this live action did a phenomenal job bringing that to life!

1:50 they are not oranges. They're tangerines. And yes, there is a difference and no, I don't know what the differences are. 18:20 actually, in the manga and anime, she did tell Nojiko and Nojiko told the whole village. The village decided to play the part of hating Nami so in case something were to ever happen, she wouldn't feel tied down by the village. So she can leave without feeling guilty. Also the whole reason Nojiko has her tattoos is to make Nami feel better about being branded by Arlong's flag.
@maryisdoingvideos Жыл бұрын
Most One Piece fans would agree that Nami's arc is when the story really picks up, and you can see why. For people who start One Pieces with the anime or the manga, I'd say most of us old fans would recommend to reach Nami's arc and then decide wether or not you'd continue the journey. The live action did an amazing job adapting the "Help me" scene, everyone from the actors to the writers to the costume and set and prop designers: everyone deserves a round of applause for what they did 👏

In the anime Nami stabbing the Arlong pirates tattoo on her arm was farrrrrr more graphic......it was super bloody and highly dramatic....she stabbed that tattoo so many times it HURT the viewer just to watch.......you could really feel the hatred she has for him and she MENTALLY SNAPPED in that moment. The live action, kept it modest in comparison and yet it conveyed so well to viewers Nami's state of despair. I thought the live action did it justice without being as graphic as the anime. Nami's actress, Emily, did a PHENOMENAL performance and accurate interpretation of her character.

I appreciate the commentary on the big "of course I will" line because in most other contexts it just does not work. Even in the anime it strikes a bit awkward at first, but it's absolutely something Luffy would do in that moment so it fits. There's something so powerful about how Iñaki does the slow walk with the mean face as the music continues to swell in the background. This is the most important scene in the entire season and to say they crushed it would be an understatement

So an interesting thing to note about this scene is that at this point in the anime and manga, Luffy has never met Arlong. He had literally spent this entire arc doing his own thing away from everyone. He didnt hear a second of Namis tragic past. He doesnt know anything about Arlong. He just knows Nami, trusts her and in this moment he sees her breaking down and realizes he has to help. But he wont do anything until he hears it from her first. He just needs those two words and he'll fuck up anybody. I fucking love the "Help Me" scene so much and i cry like a bitch every time i see it. Its a masterpiece of fiction.

In the manga and anime, the whole village knew what Nami was up to. Nami's sister worked it out, and she told everyone else in secret. They just pretended not to know because they didn't want Nami to feel the pressure of everyone putting their hopes on her. They wanted to leave her the option of leaving, and not feel the pressure to keep coming back. The "Luffy....help me..." scene is straight out of the manga though, almost shot for shot. It's wonderfully done.

They don’t have the option of stretching out the back story and motivation reveals in this series. There are so many named characters in the series and every arc has someone’s background, be it a new main character or an island plot character like the little dog walking behind the mayor at the end of episode 2. (He’s only an Easter egg in the live action, but he has a small story arc that helps establish Luffy’s view of treasure and how he values his straw hat.)

that last scene between nami and luffy is even more powerful in the anime in many ways especially bc luffy in the og story actually did not know anything what was going on in the village, he literally fell asleep before any backstory happens. and because of how powerful the anime made it and how iconic this scene is for almost all op fans, i was the most afraid of seeing this scene being butchered in the live action. so when i saw how great it turned out i was beyond joyful. they really delivered on every single front. seeing not only old fans but new fans being this engaged and into the series is the most amazing thing. your reactions have been my fav to tune into, you guys are so genuine about being into the it. great reaction and comments all over.

1 Arlongs motivations and reasong was added in the live action, His real reason to be rage for fishmen were not expanded on until way later season/arc. At this point in the manga, along was just supposed to be a villain who was there to serve Nami's backstory. One piece uncovers the world slowly not dumps to much information instantly. Discrimination is not an easy subject to digest for people who are watching One piece for fun. So it was brought up slowly in manga but in LA they are coming out straight away

Nami asking for help is the greatest One thing i didn't like about that last moment is Luffy screaming "You bet i will". It's probably better if they didn't include it, Luffy can just say "You bet i will" in a quiet way. And then they make a move

Arlong's motive was a parallel to how Fishmen felt, from a 35% story completion. In the manga/anime he was just shown as Fishmen are superior...but why he wants to get back at humans, it was not cleared so early. It wasn't even there then, he was just a bad guy early on. Later on when one gets to understand fishmen more, and see Arlong had depth, then it feels like a full circle.

I think a lot of Nami not wanting help from Luffy is that she really didn't think he could beat Arlong. I think something the show doesnt do well is how merciless/strong Arlong was. I knew this show was the real deal when they were able to invoke the same feeling I had watching that scene with Nami stabbing at the tattoo and asking Luffy for help. It made me tear up when it happened in the anime and did the same in this episode. That's when I knew this series was fully legit and as long as they take their time with the story development and don't rush things this will be consistently one of the most popular shows on Netflix. A lot of the stuff that happens in this episode is pulled right from the anime including Luffy's "Yes I will !" with arms to the sky. Also all of the fish people were basically enslaved or treated less than by a lot of humans. Arlong just decided to turn all that pain to hate against his people's oppressors which makes him no better than them. Arlong deserves the butt whipping Luffy is about to unleash on him. The one thing you don't do is mess with Luffy's nakamas because he'll put his foot in your butt. Enjoyed the reaction 👍👍✌out.
@ChunnerTown Жыл бұрын
Been really enjoying your reactions to the show. I'm going to give you some generalizations here as a long time One Piece fan without going into to much detail. Your comment on Arlong is kind of interesting and I can see where you are coming from. I would first say that Arlong is a major part of what we get concerning anime to live action and many alteration were with Arlong scenes. Since this show covers 47/1,000+ episodes of One Piece they had to fit a lot of content and things that they had to cut although still good, might have taken away some of what you might have been looking for. This is why some additional scenes were added to help with this. I would also say that in the execution of Gold Rodger you saw how many people were inspired to become pirates and find his One Piece treasure. So there are plenty of pirates with low bounties, higher bounties and 7 Warlords of the sea. We are also just in the East Blue and you saw Nami draw the world so there are plenty of pirates. If you are a big time pirate you might be stronger, been a pirate longer or in a position of power that you might not care about pirates just starting out. Pirates as we should all know pillage and plunder but Luffy is a different kind of pirate looking up to Shanks. The marines protect the people by finding and capturing pirates but obviously they might not surrender and there are also potentially corrupt marines that abuse their position.

I swear Emily Rudd made me love Nami so much more... there's a newly released Netflix cast reaction she teared up at her own scene, just showing how much she loves the anime too

The "help me" scene is what truly made me love One Piece and I always go back to watch it every couple of months. The live action did it really well but it didn't really hit as hard for me. Still an amazing scene and Rudd's acting was top tier.

The strawhat that Luffy put on nami’s head is very powerful, cause in the manga before this point in time. Luffy gets pretty mad about people touching his hat. So for him to entrusted Nami with his strawhat is very emotional and powerful meaning he trusted Nami with his treasure and solidify Nami as his Nakama. To Luffy he doesn’t need to know why everything happen as is… but when someone made his Nakama cry. He’s there to back you up. This scene is the big scene where everybody who read manga or watch the anime fell in love with One Piece.

In the manga Arlong had no ambitions for the Grand Line, he was only looking at taking over the East Blue (the weakest sea).
