Something I just realized with this live adaptation. Around 15 minutes you mention the marines would start to question Garp’s leadership after letting the Straw Hats go. Every marine there was either under the corrupt mouse dude accepting bribes or a cadet who was originally suffering under Axe Hand Morgan’s local tyranny and were in a way “saved” by Luffy showing up there. In the Anime, these cadets considered Luffy and Zoro heroes.

Usopp serves a few different roles. First, he is comic relief, but he also is the closest thing to a stand in for the audience on the crew. After all, he's the only "normal" person that's part of a crew of freakishly strong monsters (Luffy, Zoro, Sanji ...) and hyper-competent geniuses (Nami ...). Once you realize that Usopp is pretty much the everyman in the cast, you learn to appreciate how actually brave he is even if does act like a coward from time to time. Because, let's be honest, most of us would do much the same.

6:55 "What happened to the element of surprise?" yeah, that's something that was lost in adaptation. in the manga, Usopp played dead because he was too afraid to fight. but after he successfully fooled the fishman, he realized that everyone else was putting their lives on the line while he was acting like a coward. that's why he stood up and called out to his enemy. afterall, his goal is to become a brave warrior of the seas.

Let's just say that Garp is on another level and his reputation allow him to get away with a lot of things. On a side note people who watch One Piece sometimes forget Luffy is different from most pirates. I mean majority of Luffy's enemies are pirates.

Yeah. He was a prominent figure to the world during the Gold Roger era and was titled Hero of the Marines after a certain incident. That 2 alone granted him so much status that the marines let him get away with most things to keep him within the marines. He also refused promotion many times and choose to remain as an vice-admiral so he doesnt have to be under the direct order of the World Noble, who he hates. In his position he can just say things like “i dont know whats going on, im just a vice admiral” kinda things. Combine all that, he basically can do almost anything and still wouldnt get fired by the marines.

You can already see the stoic exterior cracking a bit at Baratie and with his Sanji interactions. I can't wait to see the chemistry truly blossom in Season 2, now that everyone are properly onboard with being a family and Nami is free to relax and enjoy their company. If they're already this great together after a few episodes, can you imagine the chemistry we'll have with the WHOLE crew together for the entire next season?

Without too much spoilers, but I can say that they have changed a lot of story beats in regards to Garp, and to be honest these changes work for the story of the live action. Hear me out, throughout this season, despite Luffy yelling on top of his lung about becoming "King of the Pirates", he still hasn't really commited any crimes or branded a bounty as a pirates. IMO, Garp was chasing Luffy as a final warning (and test) before his grandson becomes a legitimate outlaw. That's why at the end, Garp was like "You are on your own now, boy" i.e. Luffy will now take full responsibility and repercussions for being a pirate.

Axe Hand did do something that deserved to be punished as shown when Garp had him tied in the yard so twisting the reasons for that to make what Luffy did not illegal would have been easy It's why I think putting Garp in East Blue made sense here. His influence is strongest here and compared to shenanigans in the Grand Line it could be easily hidden still.

Omg let's gooooo!! This is series stole my heart without any right to do so. Like I never watched or read One Piece and wasn't even interested in this adaptation. I only decided to watch it because I saw one too many edits but I was hooked in less than 10 minutes. I absolutely adore the cast and I've heard that a lot is different from the original but everybody still loves it. The pacing is awesome and I loooove the costumes/set dressings and all of that stuff. What an amazing show, I can't wait for season 2!

Yasopp, Usopp’s dad, was the one on Shanks’ left, his lost arm side, with the dreadlocks. The one that did the ricochet shot in the flashback. If you rewatch the flashback episodes you will see he wore a headband that said Yasopp on it.

To recap: Shanks' crew, Zeff, and Mihawk have been the only other "good" pirates we've seen (and that's still relative bc Zeff's backstory included attacking a merchant ship and threatening to kill Sanji by knife-edge, and Mihawk destroyed a whole crew bc they woke him up from a nap). Clearly bad pirates (with their crew) have been Mr. 7, Alvida, Buggy, Kuro, and Arlong. In comparison, I think only Garp's grp and Bellemere have been the only actual good Marines we've encountered (and Belle's an ex-Marine). Clear bad Marines would be Morgan and Nezumi.

To be honest there's a lot of pirates that were in a "grey" area S.P.O.I.L.E.R . . . . . . . . . . . Pirates like Law, Hancock, Jinbei, Fisher Tiger, Urouge, Gang Bege, Bonney, the entire Straw Hats Grand fleets, the entire Whitebeard Grand Fleets, and dare i say, even Shanks and Roger wasn't neccesarily evil, but they all have their dreams and goals and they won't hesitate to fight those in power (the marines, WG and even Celestial Dragons) in order to achieve it, hence why i'll say they were more in the grey area

Battle Axe gave me chills. The way he screamed at top of lungs is very Anime-like. It is main reason I watch sub over dub. The emotion in those moments are relayed way better in sub. This was a great moment. Inaki best moment I think was Battle Axe scream.

Usopp Vs Chu was a lot more epic in the anime, Chu chases him for a while longer and he actually betas usopp up a lot to the point where usopp starts thinking "its okay, i tried my best the guys will understand if i just lay low and go back once this is done" Usopp then realises he'd be a disgrace to do that so he gets up, manages to set him on fire like in the LA and even that doesnt take him down so Usopp just has to pound away at him with a hammer until he dies.

It's more like finding/reaching enlightenment or something. And I guess the same goes for Zoro. Like Mihawk may have the title of "World's Greatest Swordsman" but who knows if there's someone somewhere out there stronger than him and they just don't display it or they're part of the Marines or something. I'm telling you a truth. When I first saw the poster and the trailer of One Piece I thought it's another good comedy adventure story. I would have never thought in A MILLION YEARS that this would be such an emotional roller-coaster for me. It was such a beautiful and bittersweet journey. Shout out to all the cast and crew and the creators of this masterpiece. I can't wait for the next season. Usopp's dream is handled so well here. In the original it's far more strongly established that he looks up to and is proud of his dad for going out to sea and becoming a notorious pirate, regardless of what others say, but here, that's only vaguely alluded to, so his dream of becoming a great warrior of the sea (like his dad) doesn't quite have the same zing to it. BUT the choice to have his flashback, the equivalent to the other crewmembers eyes lighting up with promise and hope and determination, be him watching his mother die and being helpless to do anything about it, makes it hit SO HARD. Usopp is kind of aimless, he is kind of useless, he is kind of hopeless, but this little dream he chooses to chase reflects this so well. He wants to be brave, and stop running from what's in front of him. He wants to be a warrior, to protect what's important to him and win his battles. He wants to be of the sea, bigger and broader than the little town and the little room his mother died in. And until this moment (in the live action), he had never truly thought about what it meant to HAVE a dream. Or at least, not to chase it. And it's all subtext. Beautiful.

The thing about Usopp is that he's kind of the odd one out at the beginning of the story. He doesn't have a crazy power or proficiency in a fighting skill like the others, so naturally he has less confidence and is the most scared member of the crew, which serves in many instances as a comic relief. However, throughout the journey he gains this confidence and skill, be it through self-effort or particular circumstances out of his control (the latter provide some of the funniest moments in the series). I think they captured Usopp's beginning pretty well so his character should continue this way for some time, we just have to give him time to grow. Lets remember this is an adaptation (a pretty close one at that) of an anime that is over 1000 episodes, so the metrics by which characters are evaluated should be different from that of regular shows with far less story content.

The camera work in this show is seriously great, and the action/fight scenes are well composed, choreographed and filmed. But hats off to the casting director and the whole cast, because it's the characters that keep you engaged and keep you coming back for more, the whole cast did a phenomenal job.

As a life long fan of One Piece, I can tell you that this show absolutely nailed every single important aspect of One Piece, and that's why you can sense the amount of heart this show has. The only changes that were really made, bar 1, were to arcs and elements that were weak in the first place. The syrup village arc (Usopp) while it was a great arc, there were so many wild elements, and it felt dragged out, so the decision to just entirely switch it up, and make it something more relatable like a pseudo murder mystery / thriller horror episode wasn't a bad call, but because they changed major elements to save time, while still maintaining the same elements, it ended up not translating as well as it needed to. Usopp needed a better spotlight in his episode, and he needed to show Luffy his determination and bravery to defend Kaya, and that's supposed to be the hook that wins Luffy over to really want him on the ship. There is a running gag that Luffy wants to recruit anything interesting, but in the end, only really interesting and willing characters make it on the crew, so in the LA Usopp needed a better reason to be invited. But the Episode itself still carried the spirit of One Piece, because the chemistry between the characters carried those episodes heavily, and that's what I appreciate the most about this show. They sincerely couldn't have found better actors to play these characters. I simply don't believe that there exist better actors that portray and represent their characters better. Even their off set behavior and chemistry screams of the characters they play. Another change that was made, was to the Don Krieg at Baratie arc. I believe that the Baratie arc in the LA, is actually way better paced, and content wise, it feels better to consume, despite the fact, that Arlong should have been too big of a figure, to just simply show up like that. I'd have preferred it was just the subordinates that beat him, but thematically, in order to setup a second conflict, Arlong needs to show yada yada, it makes sense, but takes away from Arlong's domineering aura. But Don Krieg as a character is supremely annoying, and is probably the worst (lamest, most boring) villain in the anime, beating out Kuro for that spot. Although there are many important scenes that Sanji goes through in the anime, that cements his motivation to follow through on his dream of finding all blue, it actually goes a little too far to shove it down your throat, and makes Sanji seem like a supremely stubborn ass, that follows Zeff around like a lost kid, because he feels like he hasn't paid off his debt to him yet. They were a lot more concise in the LA, and still managed to convey a large portion of Sanji's motivation. Although I really would have changed the script a little, so that Sanji witnessed that fight, because it's an important element of the story for Sanji to realize, that there are people out there willing to die for the sake of following their dreams, and it's the catalyst for changing Sanji's decision from stubbornly staying at Baratie, to following the crew and fulfill his and Zeff's dream. There were other moments that feel awkward, but that's because they're actually necessary to convey the spirit of the story, but it just doesn't mesh well with Live Action as a medium. But all in all, with their constraints in mind, it's simply unfair to give them anything less than an 8/10. They conveyed the spirit perfectly, and took some risky decisions that managed to even out, and ended up working in its favor, despite the many stubborn anime and manga fans that can't accept that something can work, that isn't a complete 1 to 1 replication, in Live Action format.

IMO, if you think about it the reason Garp is testing Luffy is to make sure he's ready to face whatever challenges he may encounter when he entered the GrandLine. Mihawk is the best example of it, he's the best swordsman in the world (and Shanks is making fun of him LOL) and he easily beat Don Kriegs Fleet without breaking a sweat. So he sent him, for Luffy to realize how weak they are but it's just Zorro who realizes it 😂. And there are 7 Warlords roaming around the GrandLine like Mihawk, same as the Marines, they have ranks that matches their power level. Just look at Garp, a Vice-Admiral. Hopefully they show the correct rankings here at the live action. you saw how powerful he is even without a Devil Fruit, and there's someone above him, although it doesn't mean stronger that him LOL, and he explains why he didn't want the promotion. As a OnePiece fan, it feels really good to see someone who hasn't seen anything about OnePiece before, became a fan, who laughs, gets emotional and gets annoyed, like the way we all felt when we first watch or read the manga. It's like we as a fan also boards the ship and became one of them. Can't wait for the Season 2 😅

Same here, they already have the S2 script ready, the only thing get in the way is the strikes, so I hope netflix be dealing with it faster so they can start filming. And not only S2, they said the success is enough to get 6 seasons (skypiea included) already in the bag, and hopefully can be extend to 12 season afterwards. Peak Piece energy is real 🤩🤩

7:50 Zoro didn't get his swords fixed. The Wado Ichimonji was the only sword that survived the fight with Mihawk, and it's the only sword he uses in this fight.

The team has arcs planned till 12 season's, and content almost ready for the next 6 seasons, and the Netflix is onboard too. Just the official word remains for season 2. The script for season 2 is already ready. And ofcourse, after the strike ends, 12-24 months for season 2. The first week viewers were 18 million. Second week viewers were 19.5 million. So Netflix is very happy. The co-ceo released a word that Netflix passed a VERY VERY high bar and they would defo be invested in it

I like what the TV series did with the plot. In the manga, Garp did pick up Coby and Helmeppo, but didn't actually catch up with Luffy until three story arcs later. (In the meantime, puberty hit Coby like he was Neville Longbottom)

Usopp is really annoying in the beginning, he definitely wasn't flashed out enough, but he grows in the later arcs, the whole idea around Usopp is that he is scared of everything, that's why he wants to become brave warrior of the sea to overcome his fears. Garp in the anime is much funnier guy, he really hates Luffy's chosen path, but he also feels very proud when Luffy does something major, this is why he was laughing every time, after the cannon ball, after he found similarities between Luffy and Gold Roger.

They might explain the different devil fruit types/categories in the later seasons. Luffy literally had very little means to deal with them until 500 episodes into the anime.
