Thoughts on the changes made to Mihawk arriving at the Baratie and the different setup to his and Zoro's duel? Thoughts on Nami's character having more character development with the Straw Hats.

And I like the release schedule better. Netflix should have 100% dropped it on a weekly basis just like the anime and manga. Binging is cool sometimes but this could’ve been a three month long nonstop hype train.

One problem I found with live action was that they cut so much stuff that some characters did not go through the journey they were supposed to. Sanhi and Usoppe were basically extras, their story did not matter for the overall plot, there were there for one arc. For anime and manga, it works because it is a continuous story. It takes years and maybe decades for it to flesh out. The live action tv show consists of nine episodes and needs to tie the beginning to the end. As a result, I had a few problems with Sanji and Usoppe in live action. In my opinion, Sanji was not really that good of a womaniser as some people are suggesting.

Easter Eggs found in this Episode: - With the Going Merry’s railing getting broken by cannon balls reminds me that we don’t have Johnny & Yosaku ins’t here to fix it because this is the point in the Manga / anime when they appear - Garp uses his technique called Genkotsu Meteor / Meteor Fist where he throws a cannonball at an enemy ship - When entering the Baratie their outfits are from color spread: Luffy’s is from Ch.28, Usopp’s is from Volume 8 special, & Nami is wearing her outfit based on her Baratie arc & Ch.50 (minus the letters “WC”) which notice that the circles on her skirt are like a pocket - Once they enter notice the paintings on the wall references Gaimon on the Island of Rare Animals, Sabaody, a Giant King Squid, a battle at sea = maybe the Edd War, a giant wave with faces = sea monkeys from Ch.304, a Sea Beasts from Fishman Island, Foolshout Island (Koala’s birthplace), Kyuka Island, & the ceiling art is maybe the All Blue or Fishman Island - Sanji’s dish that he made is made of Elephant Bulefin Tuna which is the same dish from Sanji’s Cookbook & the fish that he buys in Lougetown that originates from the South Blue, & if you look on the kitchen wall references species from the One Piece world like a wild boar, dinosaur, the panda shark, armored stone fish, tomahawk spiny lobster & dragon salmon (Shokugeki No Sanji) - Sanji mentions Ithurzburger Stein a drink from Micqueot in the North Blue that Fullbody mentions when he ask for the wine from Sanji in the manga / anime, but then with the Straw Hats he mentions Umeshu a wine that Kureha drinks - Luffy ordering milk is a reference to Ch.1 when after Shanks gave him milk he was mock for being a kid - Koby just like Nami in Ep.1 mentions 77th Branch which is lead by Pudding Pudding - Notice that on the cannon ball Krieg shoots at Mihawk has his Jolly Roger - The large drink that Usopp had notice it had Sea Kings painted on it - During the Ending Credits you can see that they have added the Baratie located in the Sambas Region

One thing to correct here. In Chapter 1, Luffy actually drinks juice, not milk. The Viz translators in the past changed it to milk for some reason. You can watch the anime and see that he drinks juice and even listen to Shanks and you'll see that he says juice in Japanese.

I love how they gave Mihawk such a sassy personality. He's the best and he knows it, and he's just looking for anything fun to escape the boredom. One minor difference is how they show Zoro's loss. In the manga; he turns around quickly and surprises Mihawk, who mid swing intending to cut Zoro down from behind without a care. In the show; Zoro slowly stands up and turns around to see Mihawk patiently waiting for him. While I think the manga portrayal is better for showing off Zoro's badass determination, the show version fits this Mihawk perfectly because he wants to see if Zoro has anything else interesting to show him.

One scene I loved in this episode was where Zoro and Nami are watching Usopp dancing, and are basically finding his positive goofy energy infectious. Especially considering we didn't get a lot of Usopp's value to the crew on display in Syrup Village, and he didn't really interact with those two all that much either, here we have it front and centre that the others do like and value him. He's on the crew no so much because of his practical value as a sniper (so far he's basically just failed to shoot Kuro and then again with the cannon against Garp), but because they genuinely enjoy his company and he kind of fills the "heart" role of the classic five-man-band. And notably, Usopp doesn't hear this, so they'll still be able to play with his self doubt and depression later on in the series when it matters.

I always took Garp's insistence of using cadets as him wanting to make it a fair fight. Just like Mihawk took his little bread knife to fight Zoro. Garp chose neophyte marines to hunt down fledgling pirates. As Garp told Coby, every marine has to live by a code representing his own brand of justice and this seems to be part of his. Though him sending Mihawk does muddy the waters quite a bit.

I know Oda doesn't do a lot of romance in One Piece, but the fact that we got an Usopp and Kaya kissing scene in this TV Show and Oda seemingly approved of that, puts more stock on the likelihood that my theory of One Piece being a story told by an old Usopp to his and Kaya's grandchildren is likely to be a thing :D

I think my biggest complaint of this episode is that when Zoro was saying he’d never lose again, he didn’t have the “Is that alright, future king of the pirates?” It gets nowhere close to ruining the great episode but I really love that line in particular.

the way they translated a lot of OP is so well done, like how they handled Sanji, like if he was a REAL person in real life he would be that dude cracking flirty lines at ladies, go out of his way to open a door for a woman just to look like a suave good guy, stuff like that. The team behind this series really figured how to keep the same energy that needs to be portrayed. It doesn't have to 1 to 1 that's how it would end up being a little weird and off, these simple changes but still be the same vibe of characters or moments is how this series didn't suck. with that said on portrayals n stuff, my guess in the future is an easy way to keep the gag of Zoro's abysmal sense of direction but not be as blatant as it is in the anime is a quick bit of banter like "we should head south" "zoro...you are pointing towards the sun....that would be west" zoro redirects himself "still not south" "shut up"

The real life equivalent of Luffy saying he'd pay Zeff back after finding the One Piece is if, after being confronted about a massive bill, the person who had to pay it was like, "Hey, I'm gonna go find a way to Narnia. Once I do, and I become king of Narnia, then I'll come back and pay you. I'm a man of my word." If you were the waiter or whatever, you'd be like, "Yeah, someone needs a serious reality check."

31:20 Sanji was broken mentally half way through the story, locked in hell for two years really did a number on his psyche. Huh, I actually didn't have any problem with the way Zoro's swords broke, and I'm usually really critical of CGI. Thought it was kinda cinematic the way they fell apart. My waaaay bigger problems with the scene were Zoro wildly swinging at Mihawk saying "got you on the run, huh?" when he was clearly outmatched, when in the manga, Zoro's eyes go wide and he's thinking "the distance between me and him can't be so vast, can it?!", then Mihawk saying "fighting isn't all about strength" and Zoro responding with "stop talking and fight" when he had just been talking a second ago and saying "fight" twice in a few seconds sounds wonky, Mihawk stabbing him in the wrong side of the chest so it's just dangerous instead of "if you don't step backwards, this blade will pierce your heart"-level danger, Sanji not being there for the amazing and important "throw away your dream, it isn't worth dying for!" line, and finally, Zoro wasn't crying when he held his sword in the air and declared he wouldn't lose again, which is really important to me because it shows what a genuine guy he is underneath his badass persona. Don't get me wrong, i actually cannot believe how great this episode and the LA in general was, and these are little nitpicks, but Zoro vs. Mihawk is one of my favorite scenes in any manga I've ever read, and there were just a few things that they changed for reasons I really couldn't understand. But for all those little fussy bitch complaints, they're VASTLY overwhelmed by the fact that Mihawk is beyond perfect to the point I don't even understand. I mean, the guy talks in cursive and the disdain he exudes when pulling out his little knife is something I didn't know could ever be translated from a manga. I cannot wait to see more of him, and I'm hoping Smoker next season is similarly cast to be the gruff dude that he was in Loguetown and Alabasta.

Zoro was actually crying. It just sadly wasn't noticeable enough because it wasn't ugly cry but just some tears and his head was tilted up so his tears didn't flow down his cheeks but up his bandana. My personal gripe is him pulling out his sword out to swear it looked so awkward to me lol

I actually really like how they changed things up so then Zoro had a night to prepare and Nami hadn't left yet. We actually got to see the tensions amongst the crew, got moments like Nami reading to an unconscious Zoro or the two of them drinking together or her arguing with Luffy, and what led to Nami leaving rather than having it all off screen or too fast paced. Too many modern stories nowadays don't know the value of slowing down and letting characters breathe and instead rather have everything happen one after another. The live action One Piece knows the value of it very well and it shows in episode 5-6.

Honestly, Krieg getting axed isn't a big deal. In fact, that's the fate that Krieg should've originally suffered, and it's only 2 reasons that he goes as far as he did in manga and anime. 1. While Mihawk was wiping out his fleet on the Grand Line, a storm interfered, allowing Krieg's flagship to get away. 2. For some reason, instead of finishing what he started, after fighting Zoro, Mihawk just decided to leave, even after Krieg decides to take a potshot at him, he just leaves, and Luffy is forced to clean up after him. So, I'm perfectly fine with what they did here. If the main complaint is the fight between Luffy and Krieg getting cut to show "Luffy's perseverance", we get that in Season 2 in his fight with Crocodile after he gets poisoned.

I just love that the den den mushi have the same face features as their owners - Garp's has a beard and stache, Morgan's had his jaw plate. Is this something that's taken from the manga/anime?

My one problem with the liveaction is how they don't show Usopp's skills as a sniper. They even make a point to show that he doesn't know how to shoot a cannon

Even in the manga, in chapter 42, Usopp was surprised with himself that he hit the rock that Johnny and Yosaku were on first try. I don't think Usopp knew how to shoot a cannon in the manga either. He doesn't know how naturally gifted he is.

Cannons are not tools of a sharpshooter irl, nobody is gonna find that odd. Also theres no reason why he WOULD be familiar, hes never been in a naval battle or had reason to learn before that point.

Why would a sniper know about canons? Besides ussop underestimates his aim often

So, does Mihawk just sail through the calm belt or does he actually go all the way around through fishmen island/reverse mountain? 🤔

8:58 impression I got was he was feeling frustration/rage at Luffy’s defiance and a the familial pride of “did you see that?! My grandson just sent one if *my* canon balls back at us! I made him into one tough sonnovabitch!”

Learning about Garp this early does spoil any anime only watcher who has not gotten past Enies Lobby. There's that and also we have the one two punch of Garp being revealed to be Luffy's Grandfather AND we learn about Dragon and the revolutionary. So now, it is just gonna be a one punch, man.

Helmeppo's explaining the warlord system isn't as bad as you might think cuz it's ambigious if that's this generation of warlords or a previous one, there is left a lot of room to expand.
