Notice if they do not say how to unlock the supporting characters so I guess we have from the beginning of the game. then I think even if I go out and return the same level of support the characters change each time

You collect specific special coins for a character. Each character has different coins needed to break beyond level 50. You can collect special coins in dream log or free log.
