STARGATE SG-1 PREMIERED in 1997, less than three years after Roland Emmerich's feature film won the hearts of audiences with its portrayal of an ancient Egyptian civilization living on an alien world. The show continued the story of Abydos and its people, bringing back key actors and characters - like Erick Avari's Kasuf, the Abydonian leader and father to Daniel Jackson's new wife.
While Avari was happy to reprise his role for the small screen, he reveals to "Dial the Gate" host David Read that there was one thing that, as an actor, he really missed from the feature production.
This clip is from Dial the Gate's full-length, 80-minute conversation with Erick. Watch the full interview here: • 214: Erick Avari Part ...

Erick shows up all over the place, and now here! He even starts spitting facts around 4:41 I feel this every day; what we've gained in visual effects, we've lost in the actual humanity of the art.

I really like Erick - He is a good man. The characters he plays always seem to have a deep goodness to them and he is one of those approachable people you would like to call friend.

I think it does make sense that Daniel could have taught him in a year, particularly as he was older and would have had a lot of spare time on his hands, but I think it should have been more stilted. Then later when Daniel sees him in the episode where Sha're dies he could be more clear fluent which would reflect him being in Daniel's mind. Also, while you could say that why did he feel the need to learn Daniel's language when the gate is buried and there's no need for anyone to learn it, I think the abydonian people were very curious as a group and may have encouraged learning of a new language, particularly to make Daniel feel welcome.

It does. Of course the out of universe reason is that, the producers said it would handicap the show if they had to spend the first 20 minutes of every episode having Daniel figure out yet another new language, while of course training all of the extras to speak it. For a film, that makes a bit more sense. For an episodic show, it doesn't as much.

@StormsparkPegasus I mean, either way, Daniel learns their language so he could translate, but it definitely takes that out of the equation and then the rest of SG 1 can interact with them also. It definitely helps that Sha're and Skaara can be understood by SG1, and Jack in particular for the latter, but then they could have included that after they had a goa'uld put in them and gained that knowledge.

@@CJ77777 Yep, ultimately shows like this require some suspension of disbelief. I could definitely see Daniel teaching the Abydonians English though. It seems like something he would do.

GOOD FATHER! I was surprised re-checking how few episodes he was in. He seems as much of who Daniel was as Cha're (sorry for spelling). One of my favorite side characters. Thank you sir!

Stargate had so many characters big and minor, It was always nice to see the Tollan again, or the Abydonians, or the Unas. I understand as the universe grows, it's hard to keep bringing everyone back, specially since you want to keep expanding the gate universe. But it always brings a smile to my face when I see an actor on TV and I know him/her from that one episode in Stargate. :)

Its a deep dive, but honestly and realistically, if they could build stargates then downloading and uploading languages of travelers into their brains- using the gate to do so would probably have been the solution. Considering Earth has/had over 5000k languages. Plus the gate builders seeded galaxies- yeah. 5000k multiply by galaxies= as a show we would still be stuck translating for season 1😂. Great discussion guys!

What did he say he was doing at 3:23 the sound cut out? Dragon something? I looked on IMDB but I cant see anything with that name around 1997 - 1999 that he is credited for

Not sure ... I thought he was referencing Dragon*con (the fan convention), but I don't know for sure if that was his scheduling conflict circa 1997.

@@GateWorldDotNet Hmm Dragon Con only ran for 4 days around that time period. Would be really unlucky if they wanted him only on a specific week and it was the one he had commited to the convention

It's just so sad that it is completely dead silence when it comes to any info on a possible new stargate series/continuation. It's not happening at least in my lifetime or Brad Wright's. Oh well at least we have fanfiction on what could have been if you select the right story including the crossover ones.

He's so not wrong. Like... think about the difference between Independance Day(those fans who know will know ;) ) and War of the Worlds(2004). ID4, brings everyone together, everyone around the world, morse code etc, there's hope and humanity. And then WotW is all 'we're on our own, nobody's coming, isolation'. Maybe we have lost a more... humanist cinema in holywood.

5:40 mark or so mentions kids shootings... as a norm im over 40 now. i spent months studying school stats. if you follow the trend from 1800s to now world wide. it doesnt spike in america until mid 1990s. before that was very consistant nation wide no more than 5 per decade.......... what came in the 90s? wasnt video games... that was the 80s lol.........tv was ofc well established. etc........ INTERNET.............. texting....... social media...... this is what came in the late 90s..... it has KILLED our youths brains and ability to make physical connections. they dont see people. they see names they know from a screen...... people are more alone than ever now........ so many studies say that social media is way more dmging than good. all that said i will say, video games do play a small roll. in the fact more parents, fathers sit around playing video games, instead of playing with their kids, board games, card games, etc in person. humans need physical interactions. covid lockdowns proved that to where there is no doubt about it. honestly if u have kids. they should NOT be allowed online more than 30 mins a day total. No smart phones, tablets etc. give them basic flip phone for emergencys. no more than 100 texts a month for emergency. they want to talk they can say it in person to whomever. limit video game time, etc....
