For Three Dog Night, the success with all the covers owes to two factors: First, the versatility of three very talented lead singers and, Second, a very solid group of musicians in the backing band. The three singers let them adopt a very wide range of vocal styles which meant they could cover almost any song.

Spot on, but I'd add a third ingredient: The band, which chose the songs to cover themselves (the songs weren't foisted upon them by a manager or producer), had excellent taste in material and a real knack for finding songs that had been more or less overlooked in their earlier incarnations. As Danny Hutton, the band's founder and co-vocalist, used to say, "We don't cover songs ... we resurrect them."

Joy to the World is their most popular hit, and some might say it's over played, but if you haven't heard it, it's time. Let me tell you what kind of song it is: On a long road trip with my wife and two (adult) daughters, Joy to the World came up on the playlist and without any kind of precommunication amongst us, all four of us spontaneously burst into full-voiced song right along with the band ... all the way to the end. It was damn fun. And for another completely different vibe, listen to my grandpa's favorite song: Old Fashioned Love Song. "Now that there's a tune, Scotty."

They were the 1st band I ever saw live ('69) I don't consider them a 'covers band' at all, they were just great at picking songs by up and coming songwriters
@bradparnell6143 жыл бұрын
I don't even know if the term 'cover band' even existed then. This was still in the days of the studio system where the record companies matched "the talent" (being a band or solo artist) with a stable of songwriters and session musicians to come up with a recording. Many songs were given to multiple artists to record around the same time period. The Kingsmen and Paul Revere and the Raiders both recorded "Louie Louie" in the same studio in April of 1963. I wouldn't consider either a cover at all. The next year though, after the Kingsmen version became a hit, you had Otis Redding, The Beach Boys, and the Kinks all do versions and those I would consider covers.

So much more impressive when you see a live video. They are good here but they are fabulous in concert. I would vote for Eli's Coming. I lived through the 60's and 70's but have gained new respect for these guys through KZbin videos.

Their version of “ Easy to be Hard” from the rock musical “ Hair” is also great.

My favorite of theirs is Never Been to Spain. It's a cover of a Hoyt Axton song, which in and of it's self, is a great choice to react to. The Black Crowes did a solid cover of it too.

Dudes! I don't always agree with your takes, but you both give such well thought out opinions, I will always be a fan. Loved Three Dog Night when I was a kid (everything they did!). So surprised & happy you both liked Shambala. Keep on reacting to the amazing music from the past that would otherwise slowly fade away. Great reaction. Keep it going!

This song was written by Daniel Moore about a mythical place called " Shambhala". I love TDG so I think they delivered. Andy's description of curling up on a cold night with three dogs mixed with the songs name kinda gave me a Viking groove. Loved your reaction.

Im sure BW Stevenson partially had input on it since "My Maria" practically sounds the same and they both are credited with writing that one together at the same time and for the same album in 1973

@@eddyandthebadcheese2247 Stevenson co-wrote "My Maria" with Moore but "Shambhala" songwriter credits go solely to Moore. Either way. Cudos.

Daniel Moore is a wonderful singer, songwriter and musician. It’s a shame he hasn’t had hits singing his own songs. Check out his version of “Shambhala.” It’s all right there.

@@paulread8978 I took your advice and just did. I also listened to"Hollow" "Anyway" and "World War I" . He's pretty somber but I enjoyed it.

Was in the front row of the Tulsa Civic Center to see them in 1971. Check out Eli's Coming, a song written by Laura Nyro, one of the 1960s best female song writers

Shambala is the Wi-Fi password in the movie Dr. Strange. I chuckled knowing how many people wouldn't catch it. Crown of Creation by Jefferson Airplane! Carry On

One would be an interesting listen especially if you listen to Harry Nillson's original and then the Three Dog Night cover version.

Don’t fall for the ‘soft rock’ description. They can rock, also. Hard. Play “Eli’s Coming” next.

Love Three Dog Night. This is one of their weaker hit songs, IMO. Try "Never Been To Spain"

It was great to have been a kid during this era of music. A lot of the songs had a positive, almost tribal spiritual message. The songs also had great-but-simple musical hooks that you never forgot. It's almost impossible to imagine that kind of ethos in today's music. It was a very different world back then; a different social as well as spiritual reality.
