You should try permanent desperado as a mod, It makes desperado stack less damage at a time but carries over between stages

17:52 okay so like, this isn't the case for skills. I'm pretty sure it works for equipment, but you can even see in the video that with a full 7 charges of the utility skill that all of them go away when afterburner is taken.
