Happy 50th anniversary to this great song by Mike Brewer and Tom Shipley! (1971-2021). It’s June 2021 as I post this comment; it was recently released this time 50 years ago in 1971.

They were based in Kansas City in the early '70s. They played here all the time. Great memories especially at the Vanguard and Cowtown Ballroom. A guy named Paul and I interviewed them once for the UMKC school paper. They explained that the song wasn't about drugs. It's about being fed up with too much touring. Nonetheless by the time we finished we were several tokes over the line.

I love taking road trips & riding around in my friend's 1963 VW Beetle while listening to this song. It reminds me a lot of my Dad because his favorite car was the VW Beetle (he owned several of them during his lifetime), & he was usually "One Toke Over The Line". The apple sure as hell didn't fall far from the tree seeing as I'm going to bake in a little while.

LOL, I can see why she would have thought it was One TOKEN over the line! Once years ago I heard this song on the radio then about a half hour later a man called in to the radio station saying,”I’m 47 years old and I STILL don’t know what a TOKE is!” So the DJ goes,”Well, I’ll give you a hint...(pretends to be taking a puff on marijuana), then “COUGH!” explaining that it’s a puff from a marijuana (or Mary Jane, as they used to call them, like today’s popular slang terms of pot and weed), simply “One marijuana puff TOO MANY!” The man understood then and was happy to finally know what a toke was. I was 23 at the time and I even knew what a toke was.

The story is different than the story they tell in 2018 live version. They said Nixon tried to get the song banned and that Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead sang the song the same time that Gail and Dale did it on The Lawrence Welk not Dave and Dottie. The Lawrence Welk version is on KZbin.

@MrBigrobmjca3 part of being high feels like when you get a great idea. Part of it feels like when a TV show is funny, times ten. Part of it feels like being a little disoriented but not caring. Put them all together, amplify them, and then say goodbye to having a quick, accurate mind and a sharp memory.
@billyboy6028
@billyboy6028 5 жыл бұрын
That depends on what that accurate mind and sharp memory have been through. If you'd been through half of what I've endured sometimes being forgetful is a relief. Don't judge others, for you know not how others have suffered, dumbass!
