You should get a shot of the crane operator climbing up his crane in the morning, i think it would look pretty cool!
@HospitalConstruction4 жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly, there is one somewhere in one of the future episodes, we'll see. He goes up really early, and in the current episodes it is still dark out when he goes up -- he goes up before sunrise. However, over time, sunrise gets earlier.

Another great show!! I surprised there are no site offices and that they had no loo facilities till this stage either or even lunch ones Mans got to eat somewhere ??!!
@HospitalConstruction3 жыл бұрын
They had a trailer parked behind the site. A food truck comes by each day. Also, there are a lot of restaurants (take out only these days) within walking distance. Although my observation is that most workers bring their own lunch.

Great work, as usual. Thanks again. It looks like the "tunnel" diggers on the south side of the site, then later on the north side, were just digging holes to be filled with concrete? Does anyone understand what that's about?
@noaman19764 жыл бұрын
I think we need to see the structural drawings to understand what are these pits all about!
@constructionwatcher53814 жыл бұрын
I question whether it is a planned structural element. I didn't seen any re-bar go into the hole before the pour at 20:18, and they are using site-mix concrete, which I didn't think was the highest quality. I'm thinking they found some issue around the foundation of the old church that they needed to stabilize.

First time I've seen concrete being poured directly onto dirt, wonder how well this will stand up over time.
@phhowe174 жыл бұрын
Near the end they start putting down rebar above it. I think that they poured all that concrete just to provide a good working surface for next weeks pour.

The soil looks a lot like sand. It has the same consistency all the way down. It doesn’t seem to get sticky when it’s wet, so I can only conclude it is sand. Can someone please correct me? If it is sand, does that mean the hills of San Francisco are essentially sand dunes?
Oh wow, thank you. I never knew any of the history or geology, I was just surmising. I visited San Francisco once in 1986 and thought it was a beautiful city, but I never suspected it was built on sand dunes. I am really enjoying these videos. 👍

quick question since im not american, why do the dumbtrucks with two axles, so the small one have a extra axle, but so far out. like doesnt make sense to me since it cant be for the weight distribution cause its too far out
@HospitalConstruction3 жыл бұрын
Most states have a weight limit per axle (as does the Federal government). They go down to distribute the weight among more axles when needed. They do actually carry some of the weight, reducing stress on the other axles and tires. (I don't know the mechanics of how it works, but since truck weigh stations weigh each individual axle, they must work or the trucks would not pass.) When not needed, they go up to make the truck more maneuverable and get better gas mileage.
@Proud2bmodest4 жыл бұрын
I'm surprised to see all the hand digging. It would make more sense to use a mini excavator or if power lines or other sensitive infrastructure are being unearthed, hydrovac systems. This may also be because of union feather bedding rules.
@ArthurDentZaphodBeeb4 жыл бұрын
You don't know what you're talking about. The digging is the easy part. It's installing the lagging that takes time. With a mini, you'd need to rent the machine plus have an operator plus the laborer standing and watching. Not to mention how congested the site already is with another machine working.

Why do they pour concrete directly on the ground with no rebar and quite thin layer? This question is bugging me for some reason )) Does anyone know the answer to it?
@ambitiousworm18544 жыл бұрын
I would guess they put down the skim coat over the sand to make it easier to work on. Otherwise the sand would get all chewed up by the dozens of workers walking all over it as they prep for the first real layer of concrete
@HospitalConstruction4 жыл бұрын
It just gives them a level, smooth, hard surface to work on, so they're not working in the dirt. The slab will go on top, with boatloads of rebar, coming in future episodes.
@henrychan61553 жыл бұрын
Just curious. Where the trucks are going to unload the soil.?

How is there any structure to that concrete poured directly on the dirt? The second pour on top with rebar is kind of useless if the base it's on has no structural integrity. Or am I wrong?
@michaelwillis18324 жыл бұрын
It's a rat slab, it's only job is to give the main foundation something solid for the initial pour, the dirt itself has less structure.
@DejvmanXsindicate4 жыл бұрын
I don't understand neither, usually the concrete would be laid on compressed gravel.
