I picked up a pie a couple years ago, it was awesome. First off, this is take out only, but you can bring your pie across the street to a bar and have a couple of beers while chowing down. The other thing is the oven; look at the arch that lets the heat go up and curl down the sides to the floor of the oven, the flow of the hot air helps to crisp the crust. I prefer a well done pizza with a crispy crust. The owner mentioned this oven was originally meant for coal, but as he explained, his father died at 57 and he attributed it to the coal dust and fumes. Many years ago, he converted the oven to gas. Anyone passing through on the NJ Turnpike, it's right off the Elizabeth exit (12??), it's well worth a detour. This guy is passionate about his craft, he deserves to be open 4 days a week and live life on his terms.

Al is amazing! I ventured in there one May Friday in 2018. There was so much to choose from, I asked Al to choose for me! That pie was cooked to perfection based on Dave’s own preference. If you look up pizza in the Portnoy Pizza Dictionary, you’d see a picture of Al Santillo. How he gave that an 8.3 is beyond me. He was shorted 1.0 in my opinion. That probably should be a 9.3. Cmon Dave...Give Al a do-over.
