How To Get + Use JAPAN SUICA CARD on iPhone With/Without CARD NUMBER

I’d like to share with you HOW TO SET UP and USE Japan’s SUICA CARD on iPhone WITH and WITHOUT a CARD NUMBER. Using some sort of Transportation IC card is kinda standard in Japan, especially in cities like Tokyo, Osaka… since it helps us save time and money at the same time. If you have a smartphone, consider set up and use the Suica card on your phone. I’ll show you 2 ways, STEP BY STEP how to GET and USE the Suica card on your phone in this video. The first way is via APPLE PAY (APPLE WALLET). And the second way is via SUICA FINANCE App.
Recently, according to JR, due to the chip shortage, they’ve stopped selling some of the cards like Suica, Pasmo (unless you stay in Japan and buy the monthly commuter pass, you still can buy it).
If you travel to Japan and prefer a physical card, you can consider the Welcome Suica card or the Pasmo Passport card, which are the cards created for visitors to Japan. But please be noted that these cards are non-refundable and only valid for 28 days.

So if anyone else had the same problem as me in adding their details - like first and last name DOB - I just used Google translate to get the characters for my first and last name and your D.O.B in Japanese will be YYYY/MM/DD. For the zip code I just used random numbers id remember as that’s the only thing that worked. Hope this helps others.

EDIT: Title fixed, the previous one was iPhone AND ANDROID. Like many said, it only applies if you have an iPhone. I believe the last generation or 2 of Pixels are also compatible. If your Android phone has been purchased out of Japan, there's no way. The Suica app cannot be downloaded if you don't have a Japanese account. So basically the title should be "how to get + use Japan SUICACard on iPhone and only on iPhone.... Good thing the SUICAs are available again.

a couple of things to note in this video for tourists: YOU CANT USE THE SUICA APP!! IT IS SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED ONLY FOR JAPAN RESIDENTS, while creating your profile as said in this video, you cannot enter a postal code and a japan number, which is mandatory to go further, that is why the app is not in English, they don't want the tourists to use this app.

@@user-lv9ty8qp1k yes you can buy a physical Suica card in Japan. Currently only the Welcome Suica is available (which is only for tourists and has a 24 day lifespan) but the normal Suica card should be available again this fall after being halted due to chip shortages.

Your video was great! Very informative! I just got back from Japan. I go every summer. I only use paper tickets for the trains when I’m there. I don’t like the idea that the money I put on the card or app expires and that I can’t get a refund. If I could save the money on my app until I go back in a year I would totally use it. I am watching this from US and was able to set up SUICA card using Apply Pay. Fortunately I read Japanese so I can understand the instruction. However, the name part was a little confusing. When I entered the name in English, it did not take. I needed to use katakana for my name. Is this correct? Also if you are a tourist, what postal code do you use? I used the one for my first hotel. Hey there. Now you don’t need to do all those steps for get SUICA number anymore. You just need to have the SUICA APP already installed on your iPhone, so you may press “CARD DATA” when opening the digital SUICA CARD on apple wallet. So, it will redirect you to the app with the card issued to you with complete number.

Excellent vid! I have an existing physical Suica (not the Welcome Suica) that I have used on 3-4 previous trips over the past several years that I recharge every time I enter Japan. hi, as far as I know, the remained balance on your digital suica wallet won't be able to be transferred to another wallet. it can only be refunded/transferred to a bank account of yours, which has to be in Japan. therefore, it's best to use all the money on your digital suica wallet before you leave Japan. Correct. Your phone needs the FElica technology. I have a Pixel 8, and only the Japanese version of it has FElica. All iPhones have this so not an issue.

Alternative way to get physical card without 28 days limit: Visit JR Central Japan (JR東海) Tourist Center (JR TOKAI TOURS) located in JR Tokyo Station, and you can buy physical TOICA (IC card issued by JR Central Japan) and use it like other IC cards in Japan. (p.s. I bought my card at JR Shinzuka Station at October while traveling from Yokohama to Osaka)

So if anyone else had the same problem as me in adding their details - like first and last name DOB - I just used Google translate to get the characters for my first and last name and your D.O.B in Japanese will be YYYY/MM/DD. For the zip code I just used random numbers id remember as that's the only thing that worked. Hope this helps others. commented by amaya below

the ic card number is not a must-have. it's just a bit more convenient. imagine it's like an electronic pocket of yours. after you buy a shinkansen ticket, you can put that ticket in your "electronic pocket" so that you don't have to carry around the actual paper ticket of the shinkansen. if you don't have that "electronic pocket", it doesn't matter. you just use the paper ticket of the shinkansen, as normal.

FYI : for American with VISA and trying to add a suica via apple wallet, it will not work. its something to do with us visa not allowing payment to work with suica and they havent fixed it for over a year. just went through this two weeks ago. luckily was able to get a physical suica card from a friend as the suica card isnt given at the moment.

You cannot setup SUICA or PASMO in Android unless your smartphone were Japan domestic market, because the NFC only work with the Osaifu Keitai app, built in app that only release for Japanese market smartphone. Even you have the same smartphone that were sold in Japan but bought it from overseas, you cannot use the Mobile Suica or Pasmo.

1. Android works only with Android phones bought in Japan. Any Android phone baught outside Japan does not have the required chip for use with mobile Suica. 2.Paying with Apple Wallet works only with American Express or Mastercards from outside Japan banks. Non-Japanese issued VISA cards will not work at all. For Mastercards it can work, but can also suddenly stop working after a while, which happend for me. Last year I could top up my Wallet Suica, this year it did not work. 3. When trying to work through the Suica App process, you are asked to enter your name in ""full width characters" which I could not figure out, what that means. So whatever I tried, it did not accept my entries for my name.

@@pirochu666 Here's the frustrating part: virtually all android phones use the exact same NFC chips as the Japanese ones, it's all software and geo-location restricted due to licensing. You can get a Google Pixel 4 or later to work however it involves rooting the phone, switching it to a Japanese model ID, VPNing to Japan and running the osaifu-keitai app to provision the hardware. Once the hardware on the phone is provisioned you can unroot the phone and sideload the feliCa networks and Japan google wallet helper apps and mobile Suica will actually work. but it's a real pain to do it.
