The specs on this plane are incredible: 535 mile range, 140mph cruise, and it gets better mileage than my car! And at 1/6 the price of a production plane. I wanna go back to ground school to get my private pilot's license! (I didn't finish the first time, 20 years ago)

Too cool! 😁 Now that my project Sonex is flying again, I'm going to have to build one of these. Just need to make some room in the garage first... And my budget.... 🤣

this looks like alot of fun to build and fly. so far this kit is the least expensive way to get up in the air. i dont know how i feel about the foldable wings though.

he pushes the handle towards the rear of the plane to fold the wings. silly question, could wind, debris or hitting a bird push that handle folding a wing in flight?
@michaelb.89533 жыл бұрын
To answer the question to my assumption I would say, no to wind, debris or a bird folding the wing simply because I would guess that in flight their is a tremendous amount of pressure on the internal mechanism that it wouldn't get dislodged that easily. A bird would have to strike the handle at just the perfect angle if it didn't strike the wing's leading edge first loosing most of it's energy before hitting the handle and at that point it would get deflected away from the handle if it even hit that area of the wing that the handle is located. Just go play the lottery on the day that you fly and if you loose then you're safe to fly. I know weird logic.
@rickpellicciotti2 жыл бұрын
There is a spring loaded pin that holds the folding handle in position. You have to move that before you can push the handle to the fold position. If you don't want the folding wings, you can simply install bolts and the wings will be fixed.

What are the large red and black levers on the left? I'm talking about the ones with the Plasti-dip handles, not the anodized throttle lever. Where are the brakes? Is there an option for toe brakes?

Would this qualify as an ultralight, or does it still require a pilot's license?
@SoundOfYourDestiny3 жыл бұрын
Ultralights have to be under 255 pounds, so no.
@LegoShaq2 жыл бұрын
You could go for a sport pilot certificate, but it’s not a bad idea to get your private pilot certificate. Sport cert is obviously cheaper and quicker!

42 mpg? I thought airplanes were based on gph (gallon per hour)? As you could travel many more miles depending on location... still a great plane, would love to have one.
@lawrencemiller38296 жыл бұрын
@ 3:47, the spec states 42 MPG, 150 MPH TAS, at 8000'. It would seem the MPG is lower at lower altitudes. That is higher than I would prefer to fly, and I would consider oxygen there.
@hobie16136 жыл бұрын
Lawrence Miller there is no need for oxygen at just 8000 feet. I fly at 10,000 feet with no supplemental oxygen and haven’t ever had any problems. But you stick to altitudes that you think are safe to fly at.

For $30k to $40k I would purchase one, but I would never spend $140k on this tiny thing. I would rather purchase an old Cessna 172 for $30k and spend another $30 on restoration. That way I would have a 4 seater certified aircraft for half the price of the tiny Sonex. This Sonax aircraft is mostly a toy for the rich and famous. I am not saying there is anything bad about the aircraft because it sure looks awesome, but this is not an aircraft you could take for a cross country trip with your family, that's the only reason I am saying it's more of a toy for a rich person that just wants something fun for a weekend.
