Thank you very much! I'll try that on one I just bought at an "for parts" price. I'm aware that there is no guarantee that it will work on all "Onkyo malady" victims, but your brief, to-the-point, and easy-to-follow instructions give me a good shot at succeeding.

I'm having a TX-NR414 with this "no sound" problem for many months. Haven't tried your solution for now (but will try) but I "fixed" it with another solution which is working as long as the problem exist: Power up receiver, TV and a video source, play a video (movies are a good source) and let that playing for at least 15 minutes to "heat up" the receiver. Stop the video, power off the receiver for >=10s and turn it on again (sometimes my receiver turns on by itself after a sec). Wait until (the relays?) are doing their "click" (sometimes "click---click") and voila, sound is available when starting a video again.

THANK YOU. My SR-707 started needing a warm-up and power-cycle to get the speaker channels online. Only 5 minutes at first, but as time went on that grew to 10, then 20, then stopped working altogether. Invested in a flux pen and IR thermometer, blasted the DSP up to 200°C with a heat gun, left it alone to cool down below 40°C, plugged it back in and voila, good as new!

Just did this to my 11 year old Onkyo tx NR 809. I used rosin flux for electronics as others mention in the comments. I applied solder with the heat gun for the second time. It’s working again. The circuit board it a little discolored from the heat. Didn’t use a thermometer just got it hot enough to start smoking. So after 10 years of service my Onkyo TX-NR809 finally experienced the dreaded DTS chip solder symptom. Back in the day when I bought the receiver I heard about the issue and so I installed two 140mm fans on top of the receiver in a pull configuration from day one. After so many years I thought I escaped it by adding the fans but it finally gave in. The speaker icons stopped coming up and I would have to restart the unit in order to get sound. In a matter of a month it went from a restart to few minutes to about 15 mins in order to get sound. Performed this fix with flux with a paint heat gun right under 400 degrees Fahrenheit and also went overboard and added some passive aluminum coolers to every chip on the board. Turned fans around and now running in a push config. It's working like new but only time will tell (Fingers crossed). I lover this receiver to death and only wish Onkyo would have cooled the chips properly. Will keep you guys updated. Upscaled thank you so much for sharing this video it really helped...

@@Fancy_PotHead Funny you asked cause about a week ago it started with the no sound issue after 3 months. It needed to warm up for about 20-30 mins to get sound back. Got tired of waiting and bought a Tx-Nr 6050 for $329 open box on Ebay. Have to admit I really like it considering it's bang for the buck compared to likes of Denon and Marantz. Sucks it has no pre-outs but used a Russound ADP-1.2 line lever adapter to hook up the Crown XLI 1500 for the front towers and is working really well. Really crossing my fingers this one lasts as long or longer than then the previous one but Onkyo did add a nice cooler and fan to the chip and HDMI board. Only time will tell once again...

Thanks for the video. I’m gonna throw my 2 cents in because, reasons… The heat needs to be hot enough the solder begins to glimmer/shimmer at that point the solder is reflowing and you can kill the heat. Very important: do not touch, bump, or disturb the chip while the solder is reflowing/liquid. It’s nearly impossible to realign the chip pins by hand exactly to the correct pads on the board. I learned this the hard way…. I did this repair to my 609 about 2 years ago and has worked like a champ since. Until last week. Will try reflowing again. Cheers

But I'm getting an odd issue that has the potential to be bad as well. I turn on the unit to do some online gaming, sometimes it works fine... and sometimes not.... the speakers array initializes and I see them on the led readout.... but I I don't hear anything from the speakers... when it's going to 'work'.. I'll hear a little tiny click or pop from the speakers. So, I can let it sit for a few minutes.. zippo.. no sound. I turn it off... turn it back on... and NOW the speaker array isn't lighting up in the display (and still no sound... durp) Buuut... if I leave it on for a few minutes.. (5-10 is good), THEN turn it off, then back on... the array comes on, I hear the tiny *pop* from my speakers, and everything works fine... Any ideas what this is?... using it in 9.2 and love it.. would hate for it to die on me as the build quality (with the exception of the 3030) REALLY went downhill after this unit

@@jamesrobinson2086 If you have nothing to lose, you can try the same procedure for more time and higher temperature. Other than that, you would probably have to take in for service but it would probably cost more to fix than what the receiver is worth, although it would be cheaper than a new 9 channel receiver. I haven't any 9 channel receivers for less than $900 these days.

Make sure you use flux designed for electronic circuit boards and not the type for plumbing. The correct type has rosin in it and will gently remove oxidation on the metal pins. Plumbing flux has acid in it and will corrode the circuit board connectors and will eventually cause failure.

The problem with all newer electronics, newer meaning post 2002. There is a corporate mandate ordered by the Clinton Administration to stop using lead based solder. Companies of course had to use a different type of solder and over time it looses it's connection to the components. This was the issue with all PS3 and 4's and Xbox platforms. This is the reason why you got the red ring of death on the console. One can reheat the connection to get it to work again, but it will only last for a short time. The only way to fix the issue at the component level is to remove the solder and re apply lead based solder which some companies are using again to combat expensive recalls.

Or you could just go ahead and throw it in the trash if you want to save yourself the headache. I did try using a heat station three times and then I put it where it belongs, in the trash.I bought it for 45$ at a goodwill thinking I got a great deal because I plugged it in and everything worked great until I got home and then found out that it had no Sound. apparently, this was a common issue with many of the receivers onkyo manufacture during this time due to a DTS chip overheating .kinda sad that onkyo let quality slip away and know I wouldn’t trust buying any of their products . I did check the hours on the display and it registered it just a little over 8,000 hours. They could’ve had a recall on all of them and serviced them but like so many other manufacturers, they hide behind a limited warranty and stick the consumer faulty products.

I just bought some flux and heatsinks and will be doing this on my unit. The thing is I don't have a heat gun and will be using an incandescent light bulb to heat up the chip instead (I've been heating the chip with this bulb to fix the unit but the issue keeps coming back if I leave it on for too long, this is why I'll be applying the flux and heatsink). How long do you think I should leave the bulb heat the chip after applying the flux around the chip? I've no expertise in soldering.

UPDATE : I did it once using the incandescent bulb (the flat spotlight type) letting the chip and flux heat up for about 8 mins. Unfortunately that only fixed it temporarily. I cleaned the chip and surroundings and re-applied the flux around the chip and then let the lamp sit there for about 30 mins instead. I let it cool and even applied a bit of air to disperse the flux that was on top of the chip and when I saw the flux had cooled down, applied some Artic Silver Ceramique 2 thermal paste on top and applied an aluminum heatsink like the one on this video. So far it's been running great for 2 days in a row, I'll update if it stops working.

Just double checking but you mean 15-20 minutes not seconds right? If it’s minutes, there definitely a problem. It’s hard to say if that’s it. I did this to mine cause I had nothing to lose.
