As bookkeepers have to deal with taxes and bank reconciliations, most people/companies looking for a bookkeeper want one located at least within the same state. So even though you can find online work, you might still need to be located nearby or be very knowledgeable about the particular state's rules/regulations about taxes/employees/banking etc.
