with the caveat that I love the banter and do not expect scientific accuracy from a bunch of dudes just shooting the shit, I do want to just share some cool facts about peregrines bc they are PRETTY cool and i'm a nerd: peregrines eat pigeons most of the time, that's why they're so fast--they hunt pigeons mid-air. Just knock them right out of the air with their fists. And the speed is only in a drop, not powered flight. Falconry-trained birds do not realise they can eat what they catch for the falconer, because the falconer never lets them eat what they catch; after it retrieves the prey--usually a pigeon--and the falconer put the prey in a bag, the bird is hand-fed little bits of meat from the falconer's hand. Falcons (and hawks) are also often captured in the wild as young birds, trained and used to hunt for a bit, then trained to hunt for themselves and released as very successful wild animals--imagine being taken in by aliens as a college student, trained to a profession for free while receiving excellent food and medical care and safety, and then released; it's like that. Falconers are the chief group of people helping restore populations of endangered raptors because of this expertise they have! Peregrines were endangered in the USA before someone realised that skyscrapers are a lot like cliffs, and cities have a lot of their naturally-preferred prey of pigeons, and we tried releasing them into cities. It worked! And now peregrines are thriving in NYC and other places as a protected species! I think the boys are 100% correct that training ANY bird to do things is called falconry though. Pelicans and storks are both birds that practise infanticide of their own--seabirds generally engage in behaviours we humans find very 'cruel', though, of course, animals can't have morality--so I wouldn't pick a seabird to carry a human baby at all. It's a shame pigeons are so small, they're my pick for baby-carrying, bc they home and they're domesticated and love people. Big enough pigeon would be happy to carry babies for us.
