This is the first time I've seen a Hygger light over a walstad aquarium, and I think it looks awesome. I love that you've removed your filter, so there is no flow in your aquarium. I really appreciate the tranquillity from there being no buzzing or other noises, just silence from my aquarium. The gases you see, I would guess that they are mostly co2 from the mineralising and cycling of the bacteria in the soil. In my last Walstad, I kept CPDs without a heater as CPDs and shrimp do well at cooler temps. Keep on Walstading!

Thank you for the appreciation, it means a lot to me! I didn't remove the filter, but the water pump... I never had a filter! I'm a little worried about the gases in the substrate, I don't know exactly what they are and how they will affect the aquarium!

@walstadmethodstepbystep In my opinion, the gases are a positive sign. They are a sign that the bacteria in the soil are happy and healthy. I'm a really big fan of your aquariums aesthetic, and it will not doubt influence my journey within the walstad side of the hobby.

Your tank is lovely! My opinion is that the heater is necessary for the raspboras and shouldn't cause issues beyond algae growth, and ideally that should be no more than current. As for the pump removing gasses, my understanding is that surface agitation helps the co2 levels, beneficial to plants. I feel more comfortable if I at least have an airstone or bubble wand. Finally, the gasses you (and I, in my walstad tanks) are very large bubbles that escape quickly; I don't think they have much chance of dissipating in water. I wouldn't worry, as I don't when my tank burps. I love the light stands! getting some for my tanks!

8:44 Regarding the heater: depends on your room temperature. CPDs like 20 to 24 degrees Celsius. You might not need one if the room is warm enough.

Do you not use an air pump ? Im also starting a walstad rank but with red soil and compost mix cuz in my region aquasoil or even organic soil is costly and im broke lol :( planning on vallosneria , cobomba , crypts and ludwigia. 20 G tank

I only used a water pump to circulate the water in the aquarium. but now I don't use it anymore. I don't think the air pump is useful in a well-planted low-tech aquarium. don't forget to subscribe to stay up to date with other tips

I was looking for red plants that do not require co2. you can find it on youtube. my red plants, some have holes in their leaves, some are green now, and others are growing but very slowly

do not rush. document yourself well first. it is best to start with some less pretentious plants
