Amazing video! Perhaps you need a powerhead. It creates unidirectional current, which in turn improves circulation and reduces algal growth.

Every time you remove growth from the plants, you remove nutrients from the ecosystem. Why not find organisms highly efficient at breaking down plant matter and leave your prunings in the tank? Then the nutrients will be able to re-enter the ecosystem and feed more plants.

I've had big freshwater tanks where I didn't do much water change but thrived. Even for salt water aquarium, one of the hardest anemone to keep in the aquarium, (giant carpet anemone) grew and thrived in my aquarium and I barely did any water change. But I was smart about how I managed my aquarium. I think over 90% of info on forums and internet is regurgitated mumbo jumbo nonsense most people copy brainlessly, as if it's some kind of religion. People are so afraid to deviate from the rule.

Let the plants grow to the top or out of water. This allows them to have co2 from the air.

Idk if this is a dumb question, but how can you be sure there's no CO2 in the aquarium? I thought all living things like plants and animals exhaled it.
@walstadmethodstepbystep2 күн бұрын
is co2 in the aquarium, maybe produced in the soil, because there are some bubbles there. or maybe the plants use co2 from the air that comes into contact with the water surface
@SrenJessen19763 күн бұрын
Nice experiment. Would it be possible that pottery soil's organic matter degrades into the large CO2-bubbles, while the small bubbles (=pearls) are the oxygen generated by the plants' leaves. Perhaps you could check if the plants that have roots capable of taking up CO2 are those that thrives best?

Just discovered your channel, very much enjoyed the video and will watch more. I have basically the same inhabitants as you although I opted for Amano shrimp. Yes the amanos can be aggressive for food and will trample the cherry shrimp to get the crab bites I drop in for them but the cherry population continues to grow. I've subscribed and look forward to seeing this tank set up and growth.

@Amin-oc9nq3 күн бұрын
Watched the whole video and I think there's the correct way to not feed the fish so much, not change the water and not trim the plants aggressively. Because this kind of aquarium should basically balance itself out and 2 things are needed, energy and nutrients; and the ecosystem has enough of it and needs to be left alone to find a balance in circulation. Also the light was definitely too much which stimulated the algae growth and constantly adding nutrients and feeding makes the algae growth even worse.

11:03 I'll check this trick as it's clear a lot of things seem unusual to me, how did the plants grew to this size in an environment that is conducive to algae that destroy plants? In most scenario the young plants are full of algeas and die, it's weird because if that amount of plants aren't doing well how could we think it was better before ? Also I don't notice any layer of dead-plants on the floor, without filter you should get a layer of dirt. I suspect you have a sort of plant farm in another aquarium, as most plants in the video seems to be dying, I suppose they will die wihout solution.
@walstadmethodstepbystep4 күн бұрын
the new plants in the aquarium and the change in light intensity have changed the balance of the ecosystem. there are not enough nutrients for all the plants. some of the plants will get used to fewer nutrients and others will die. I did an episode, the one with the experiment, when I took a lot of plants out of the aquarium, and the remaining plants started to grow big and healthy. I think the same will happen now, since there will be fewer plants in the aquarium

Sir can you please inform if water temperature control is needed for such aquariums and if yes what kind of heaters and at what temperature is it set to ? Thanks and best wishes as always!!
@walstadmethodstepbystep4 күн бұрын
thank you very much. in my aquarium the temperature is now 20 -21 degrees Celsius. if you don't have shrimps, which prefer colder water, you can set a higher temperature like 24-25 degrees C
