Those old Crates rule! The GX130C is a very close cousin of the Ampeg VH140C that was used on lots of 90s death metal and hardcore albums, and the Crate version was even used on Cannibal Corpse's "The Bleeding" album. I would think the GX65 would be the same pre-amp section, but I'm not entirely sure. Either way, definitely not to be slept on when paired with a good speaker! EDIT: Since you're looking for suggestions, the Peavey Bandit! I own two and absolutely love them. A few of the older models came with you're absolute favourite speaker (the Sheffield 😜) and others came with either a Scorpion or Blue Marvel. I did a speaker swap on both of mine with an Eminence Swamp Thang and they're absolute monsters now!

Added bass traps in our rehearsal space and it made a big difference. Now we kick the drummer out there, mic everything up and we all run our guitars into torpedo captors and track practice every week with headphones. Gives clarity at practice and gives me plenty of material to practice mixing.

sounds like excellent set up man - if u can give any insight - how do i go from a couple of Amps to using headphones for the two guitars and bass while practicing ? any helpful hints or directions to links for research? thanks
@ShinobiSr110 ай бұрын
The way I have it set up is with an interface that gives me 16 inputs. So I mic the kit and isolate the drum room. In the control room we do the guitars, bass and vocals. We bought a couple of torpedo captor x's for the guitars and the bass goes into a bass driver di. I run that shit into reaper like I would a standard recording session and give everyone headphones so the only loud thing would be the drums and vocals, both of which are isolated into the two rooms. Works well so far. Built it out of a garage which I split into two rooms with a window. Works for me!

I know that this video isn't really about this, but I just want to thank you for showcasing how little guitar pickups actually have to do with tone. Obviousl,y the output and the type of pickup still matters a bit, but I feel like now when I'm looking at guitars to purchase, I'm a lot less focused on how the guitar will "sound" and more focused on other specs and looks (beautiful instruments make me want to play!). I don't need to pointlessly watch KZbin videos comparing tones from guitar to guitar, I can just focus on the build quality of the instrument and whether it meets my needs and other aspects. A little comment here about pickups. When people are addressing this thing with pickups you often respond something like "We play metal you idiots." And you do have a very valid point there. For most metal music pickups does not make much of a difference, and that is what matters most in your context. However, I don't think those comments are dumb, and from an educational standpoint, I think it would be a good thing to point it out clearly to avoid misunderstandings, and also because many of these commenters will probably not even see your response to their comments since they come in another video. And that would possibly have the unfortunate effect that they don't think you know what you're talking about, which reduces views, which in turn reduces valuable knowledge sharing. Furthermore, sure 99% of the guitars in metal is heavily distorted, but those 1% cleans are still important and should be addressed. Greetings from the land of In Flames and FU Glenn!

Hey, It's great seeing my question about good cabs and cheap amps being read! What I have done in the past is to add a speaker out off of the speaker itself. If you use a stereo 1/4 jack you can make it so it cuts the power to the internal speaker when you plug in an extension cabinet. I've done this with my old Line 6 Spider 15, a 40 watt Vox Valvetronix and a 15 watt crate. In every case it improves the sound. With cheap amps the part most skimped on is the speaker.

Or at least, you don't have to pay money, just put in the effort and listen! Apprenticeships in places that actually know what they do, and really want to teach you is often better than any college. And yes, I went to uni and got my engineering degree. Don't regret is one bit! But in my weekend job as a repair tech, and my volunteer work as light / sound tech I learned a LOT more useful skills! We learned a 35 minute set of their already recorded material in about 12 hours spread out over 5 or 6 Friday night Jams and did our first show with this revamped lineup. Now we're gonna start bouncing riffs and ideas jamming and see where it goes not biased to making it fit the established material as the fan base is small , local and probably flexible enough to grow with whatever we evolve into.

Keeping from rattling the drumset, less bass buildup, and you can tilt your amp up towards your ears allowing you to hear yourself better if playing with a one monitor mix, or no monitors, while keeping a lower stage volume and not bleeding in to the singers' mics so the audience can actually hear them!

I had just started getting in the gritty part of setups (processing boards, rack units, audio interfaces, ECT) over the span of 6 months and less than $300, I turned my gaming nook into half a recording studio and started learning how to record and edit music. Virtual amps were an amazing tool for backing track and ambient noise generations. Not having all of the physical hardware to produce certain sounds was handled well with software. I still say the problem we face most of the time with these comments is the fact that "tone" has different meanings in different contexts. For a recording engineer looking at the spectogram and moving sliders: Tone is almost entirely just frequency response. Which makes no sense when you think about it. For everyone else, tone is the culmination of frequency response, dynamics/compression, grit and distortion character... That pedal show, andertons, and a few other people have done the test where they put eq pedals in various parts of the chain to see if they could make different pedals and amps sound like other pedals and amps... And no. There's more going on in the tone than just the EQ. And a good example of this would be to put BB King's amp through a vintage 30 instead of the T-75 his amp came with... Would it sound different? Yes. Would it sound like Metallica? No. So let's look at what WOULD do it. Hands? Somewhat... I mean trying to play unforgiven without a b bender sounds very different. Playing Thrill is Gone with palm mutes would sound totally different. But assuming you are actually playing the same song in the same tuning then no, not really. But you have to play metal if you want to sound metal. Guitar/pickups? Not really. *maybe* if it was really high output ridiculous pickups with active controls... But at that point it's basically just putting a tubescreamer in your guitar. Low output pickups with a high output pedal will do the same thing. Cab material? Jim Lill did that, made little difference. Make it out of styrofoam. Won't matter much. So what's left? The amplification. If we had Mr King plug Lucille into a tubescreamer and 6505 that ran through his normal cab and chug palm mutes... would it sound metal? YES. Now what if we kept King's whole clean rig and just added a metal pedal like a Metal Muff or a hm-2 in the signal... Would it sound metal? Yes, as long as he played metal. Therefore we have our list. What makes a metal tone is this in order: 1. What you play. Blues with distortion is still blues, same with country and pop. Country strumming will never chug if you don't mute it right. If you want to sound metal, you have to play metal. 2. The pedals. If you play metal with the right pedal, you can sound good with just about any amp. In fact a lot of times I will skip an amp altogether and just DI the pedal into an IR loader. Sounds great. I can make a tweed do metal or a 6505 do country with the right pedals. 3. Speakers and open/closed back cab. It can make a big difference in frequency response, but not much else. And when we look at the full mix, most engineers are cutting off the bottom 100hz and capping the top at around 5k anyway, so the differences between production speakers are actually quite small. And as we discussed, a speaker won't make a blues tone metal or a metal tone bluesy... The change in overall tone is quite small compared to something like adding a pedal. And the rest doesn't matter. The recording gear is flat enough that even the cheapest junk on the market will get you a perfect recording at guitar loudness. The pickups and guitar don't matter after you add even a little bit of distortion. Fresh strings are good, but they won't make a big shift in tone either. The amp doesn't make much difference, with the right pedals any amp will sound good. Things like tubes and pickups had an effect on the output, but if you're using a pedal then you can adjust the output by turning a knob.

I do just want to mention that the pannels glenn made aren't really bass traps. For a bass trap to be made of a porous material it would need to be half as thick as the wave length. It definitely works, will definitely tidy up a broard range of the midrange spectrum, high end flutter echos and some of the lowend information but likely only interms of the reverb time of the space. a true bass trap works similarly to a helmhorts resonator, basically a box with a whole in it filled with some sort of porous material, low end information is non directional, so having such a trap can absorb this information and trap it inside and by the time it has bounced and around and escapes itll gace much less energy. Not saying the treatment glenn built doesnt work just saying that there is likely a more effective way to treat low end room modes in a space then a porous panel absorber.

Heeey, Honeymoon Suite is actually awesome it appears!!!! Caters nicely to my proclivity for generous amounts of reverb combined with slight chorus on the guitars. And also; not a cookie monster in sight...

while i'm here, here's a possible vid subject for you. emulating micing techniques. I came up before drum and amp/irs were of their modern quality (line6 pod was cutting edge lol). So i learned alot of mic/recording techniques that, honestly, have been kind of feel obsolete nowadays (unless you're a pretty successful act). I was listening to korn's follow the leader yesterday and was really taken in by the "roominess" in the drum-kit sound. Got me a bit nostalgic. It got me thinking back to the days when i was trying to get drum recordings with the classic 4-mic approach. then i started wondering how i would approach that sound (and others) with modern virtual instruments and stock plugins. I'm sure i could figure it out on my own over time (a sparse commodity), but i think that could be cool to explore as a video (unless you've done it and i missed it).

DUDE! You used a clip from Jonny Quest at 4:01! That show is awesome! I grew up watching that with my sibblings. I think that was the Yeti episode. Too bad it didn't go on for more seasons, but what we got is perfect. Nice to know someone else who knows the show!

I'd love that Crate/Cab video! I have an old park g10 beginner amp. i usually hook its headphone-out up to a ir-pedal, its sooo good, you wouldnt guess... (Maybe not for metal though. But now it loves pedals! What a surprise!)

Great video Glenn. In 1986 I was a Senior in high school and our annual variety show was coming up so this goofy dude that wanted to sing a song in the show asked me if I would play guitar for him so she could sing "New Girl Now" lmao. I was into VH Priest Maiden but I felt bad for him so I agreed. I learned the song in 8 minutes and he actually did a great job singing it. My friends busted my balls for 6 months over it.

Hey Glenn, thanks for doing the hard work of testing a lot of variables that affect guitar tone! I have one guitar question and one bass question. Guitar: I remember you replaced your green Harley Benton Amarok's stock pickups with Fishman Fluences, was it worth it? Bass: You got plans to investigate variables that matter for bass tone? Since most of the good tone I've heard for metal keeps quite a bit of undistorted bottom end. Would pickup type and position matter if you already have a solid amp sim like Element?
@twantheunisz928110 ай бұрын
Amp sims are awesome. They sound just as good as real amps. BUT real amps are just... Cool. Just the idea that you play a note and no computer is involved and sound comes out of a tube amp is just... Really cool!

I've learned so much since submitting my crappy entry for succs 2018. The levels, the eq, the balancing. Everything I record is so much easier to listen to, and also MUCH quieter. The best part is; all I had to do was get better at using the daw and not waste thousands of dollars on flashy gear.

Yes, you can turn off a Spider's cam sim. That's what the "classic" speaker mode is in the Spider V you reviewed. Just hook one up to decent cab and go! Even works with the tiny combos, if you open them up, clip the speaker wire and solder it to a jack. Did this to my Spider V30, no surprise at all that this thing improves dramatically when you play it through a greenback.

Confession: My main is a limited color version of an otherwise production-model guitar. It was still a sub - $1000 guitar. The local store had it hanging up for months. I fell in love with it a little more time during every visit. Any of my other guitars cost only half that or less. Plus, I waited to find one really great "upgrade" guitar while playing an entry level Ibanez for over 20 years.

i think, with all the good amp sims, the silent rehearsals should become a good way to practice without the need to invest in acoustic treatment, as always, thanks for the killer content

What works for you works. I like all kinds of sims, modeler, etc. And I have several classic tube amps I have used for decades.

There's a company that makes bass trap kits. All the stuff (including Roxul) shows up correctly measured and cut. It's more than full DIY but a lot less than fully built traps. It's perfect if you don't have a chop saw!

The crate test will be very interesting, I expect it to sound more than decent with greenbacks. I remem my first amp head was a shitty valvestate 8100 and a matching cab, it wasn't great by any means but after I swapped 2 of the shitty Celestion G12L's by EV12ls and the other 2 with g12M's, it sounded actually pretty decent (needed to be boosted, because not even EMGs would drive it enough, but still). The EV12L didn't have the horrendous price tag they have now though. But if someone needs a cheap 100w amp head that would actually deliver some good stuff with decent speakers, the valvestate heads go for 200 to 250 bucks on reverb. Another great deal for tube purists are the Hughes and Kettner triamp mk1 (wich was horribly expensive back in the days) goes for 500-600 on reverb

Ima be real, the little battery powered orange amp sounds gnarly through my two notes. Doesn’t push air like even my 15 watt tube heads but if you can control the output level that thing is THICK

Wow that old Crate brings back memories! That was the official amplifier of the Wayne Hills High school Jazz Improv band in 1994. We used to love to hit the distortion button and play Metallica songs, it would drive the teacher crazy! They should have bought a Jazz Chorus 120 if they didn't want us to rock out!
@WednesdayAddams515010 ай бұрын
What’s funny is Metallica used/uses Jazz Chorus 120 for cleans

Crates were so common in the 90s. One of the cheaper 212 combos. Most players didn't use the distortion, only pedals.
@vincebagadonis801610 ай бұрын
That distortion channel button was all we had! It was our magical button that switched between boring clean jazz mode to insane mode ..and this was long before the days of Line 6 insane...Insane is what we drove our poor jazz teacher with that button. @@LebD

Hey Glenn! Enjoy your trip! I'm freezing in my Edmonton basement jealous of your cruise tour! I did a critical listen of my work and could not tell the difference between my mic'd DRRI and my PodGO with IR cabs. I'm listening on $3,000 of gear and if I can't tell as a Dual Income No Kids shopper, you probably can't. Time to get better instruments and get my Punk chops down!

BTW, I saw Derry's daughter, Leah Marlene, at the Horseshoe in Toronto. Definitely an indie pop/rock artist (she was 2nd place on American Idol), but one of the best live shows I've ever seen. She's an amazing songwriter and really knows how to entertain an audience. ...and there was Derry right up there with her, playing bass :)

That Crate gave me huge nostalgia vibes. I remember when my local metal scene was nothing but Crate half stacks, and myself actually use a Crate BX-160 combo for my bass rig (the speaker is decent, but definitely looking to upgrade it). But I will say this, If the Crate sounds good with the speaker upgrade, you got to test out an old Gorilla amp.
@ScottRadkeMusic10 ай бұрын
Ha- I would watch that video!! I had a T-Power (single 10”) combo….. it sounded pretty rough 🧏🏼♂️ I did have a (Red Badge) Crate G120C into a (expanded metal Red Badge) oversized Crate 4x12 stack- (one can loaded with Celestion g12-50’s and the other loaded with G12m-70’s- both white UK Rolas!). That stack sounded massive!!! Only bested it when I got a Marshall JCM-800 stack ;-0
@lehmusic267510 ай бұрын
Yeah when I 1st started playing the guitar store had Crate and Gorilla amps. Just plug the Crate into a 4x12 cab and it ruled!

EQ. EQ, EQ... "Decent cheap" guitar and cheap digital effects like a moore, valeton, whatever... and we are done. Even "Speakers/Cabinets" can be emulated. Its not that easy but it makes a HUGE difference.
