For people of my generation, John Hughes's oeuvre--as writer, director, and/or producer--is widely regarded as classic fare. Superior films like The Breakfast Club and Planes, Trains and Automobiles stand side by side with charming but iffy fare like Uncle Buck and Dutch as comforting, thoughtful entertainment that has withstood the test of time (despite heaping dollops of '80s cheese permeating each film). How did the great romantic comedy Only the Lonely fall through the cracks and drift into obscurity?

And proof that Chris Columbus is a good director. Not every single movie he made I liked but he made more than one good one and this along with Candy is his most tragically underrated movie. I think this shows the best sides of both gentlemen’s fine talent as actor and director.

My favorite part of this dark movie is the picnic at Cominski. That park was in a rough part of town but if you acted right you were fine. Always a good idea to tip the attendent in the parking lot before you went in. Your car would be safe. That park was a fortress. So much history, such a distinctive look. If you watch old baseball film or photos you can always tell if it's Cominski. The light coming from those openings look like eyes or something. It was close to the interstate so after the game you could get out quick. Keep your eyes straight ahead and make no comments to the bruthas on the street.

Maureen O' Hara came out of retirement to play Rose. The role was written with her in mind. She insisted on meeting John Candy before agreeing to sign on. During filming she was assigned to a small trailer. John Candy gave her his much larger one. They we were both on Johnny Carson to promote the movie and you can see their mutual affection. After his death she said that he was one of her favorite leading men. R.I.P. Maureen and John.

This movie is pretty much Home Alone 1/2, it's directed by Chris Columbus and produced by John Hughes, it stars John Candy and Macaulay Culkin, it takes place in Chicago, Julio Macat is the cinematographer, production designer is John Muto and Raja Gosnell is the editor, and to top it all off, it's from 20th Century Fox!

Sounds like you were describing _Uncle Buck_ as I don't think Macaulay was in _Only the Lonely._ Of course I like to say that _The Good Son_ is Home Alone 3: they left him home alone one too many times and he became evil and tried to kill his brother.

The most underrated film of John Candy and Chris Columbus’ career. It may be hard to find but seek it out it’s worth it. Although Amazon Prime looks like they have it so probably not too hard to locate. One of Candy’s best performances, and proof Columbus could do romantic comedy very well. He tried again four years later with Nine Months with Hugh Grant but that was forgettable and didn’t work. This one does.

I felt the same way for Robin Williams.i heard he passed when I was at a supermarket.i couldn't move.i was frozen in my tracks. Learned so much more about the man after he passed such as how he snuck into Christopher Reeves hospital room in scrubs to cheer him up the week of the horse ridding accident. Chris was his son's godfather and that he and christ went to julliard school together. Chris put a roof over Robin's head and fed him until Robin got his financial aid. Robbin also started a similar campaign to farm aid to raise money for homeless people who needed medication. For a long time I couldn't get over his death know how he went but you can't let how a person ends their life blemish the way they lived theirs. They may have been depressed inside but they made a living making us laugh and even cry in some movies.

such a good story this movie is very heart warming he was worried about two things losing his girlfriend and his mom at the same time until he realized he needed to let mom go and spread her wings and him to live his life with someone he loves and live happily ever after and stop worrying so much, and the girl told him he had to let go and he did so wouldn't make the same mistake twice. and Danny finally came to realization that Theresa was the most important👍 not his mom he stopped becoming a burden.

I wonder if the sitcom "Everybody Loves Raymond" was partly based off this movie. I mean that show has a single cop living with his parents, just like Danny lives with his mother, the mother is overbearing and inconsiderate just like Rose and the father is a retired accountant just like Danny's late father was, while the brother is married and has kids just like Danny's brother. Plus at the end, Danny and Theresa move to NYC where "Everybody Loves Raymond" takes place.
