Drill what? The US already produces more crude than it uses; it is a net exporter. Way more being extracted now than under Trump. But most of what is being pumped is light crude, while most refineries are set up to process heavy crude. So you sell the light and buy heavy. And guess who is your biggest supplier of heavy crude? Drilling more won't solve that. Switching over the existing refineries or building new will take a lot of time and cost tens, if not hundreds, of billions. Trump's tariffs will drive up the cost of that Canadian crude - which will mean higher prices at tthe pumps. We might just add on an export tax, to add to that burden - or simply turn off the tap. As for *why* Trump has made this his excuse: he has found a loophole - "national security" - that lets him bypass the terms of the USMCA and cut Congress out of the discussion. Same as he did with steel and aluminum last time. This really isn't about the border at all, and no matter what we do, he will insist on more - until the trade war is just too disadvantageous, at which point he will say we met his demands and declare "victory." Trudeau also put a 241% tariff on US milk and 289% tariff on US butter, ensuring that couldn't sell any dairy products in Canada. Trudeau just wants free trade when it benefits Canada.

Despite loss after loss after loss when we take you to trade arbitration courts. The US has *never* won that one, yet every time the tariffs get struck down and reparations required, they tweak the wording a bit and do it again. As just the most egregious example; there are others. (I'd like to know the source for those numbers you supplied, BTW.) As for dairy: We have a supply management system here, to ensure our *much smaller* industry is fairly compensated. If we just let your country flood our market with your inferior, hormone and drug laden products, we would have substandard product AND no local industry. We consider maintaining local dairy (and eggs) a critical, core necessity - no country should make itself completely dependent on another for basic foods. Yet, we have increased how much we will allow in, over the years. Maybe we need to completely *ban* your dairy. Don't be surprised if that is part of our retaliation. As for drywall... I'd have to check, but I suspect that was a punitive tariff for Americans selling below cost to take over our market. (I have a vague recollection about that.) Which, of course, would violate pretty much any international trade agreement.

It is easier for Canada to address problems with drug and human trafficking than it is for them to feel the disproportionate pain we can apply. With tarrifs. Canada is small and it would be smarter for them to just address the concern instead of commiting economic suicide in order to not address drug trafficking and human smuggling.
@keithosmond573012 сағат бұрын
@@sacksis " Less aluminum from Canada means more oppurtunity for mines here." You actually need ore deposits before you can mine something. The reason the US imports 99% of what you use is because *you have no ore.* Not at commercially viable levels, anyway. "Not a big impact in the short term because of its abundance." Outside the US, you mean? Here's the thing: your next-biggest supplier only sells you 1/10th what we do. To supply you with what you need, global suppliers would have to make significant investments to ramp up production, and then ship it from overseas. Having seen how you treated your *best, closest* trading partners, and knowing just how fickle and unreliable Trump is, they will be VERY hesitant to make that kind of investment, out of fear of being stiffed. So, even in a best case sceario where the other suppliers *do* decide to make that investment, it will be months before the supply from them can ramp up and start delivering. "It is easier for Canada to address problems with drug and human trafficking than it is for them to feel the disproportionate pain we can apply." First, you're basing your argument on the false premise that Trump is sincere about the "border problem" - he isn't. He decided to apply the tariffs *first* and then concocted his *excuse.* See, he learned last term that if he says he is applying the tariff for "security reasons" he can sidestep the USMCA and not have to get tangled up with Congress. "Canada is small and it would be smarter for them to just address the concern..." We have a small *population* - but the longest undefended land border on the planet - plus the most seacoast. We were already working on the issue; we started as soon as Trump won, because we expect to be overrun with fleeing migrants once Trump starts his deportation. Trump simply doesn't care; no matter how much we actually *do,* Trump will say it isn't enough. Besides, it is supposed to be *your* responsibility to control what enters your country - not ours. That's how borders work. So... what is America's plan to prevent all the illegal crossings *into* Canada? That number will soon be *far* higher than people heading south. What about the drugs entering Canada from the US? How about the huge flow of illegal guns? See, if we are supposed to block people and goods from leaving Canada, then we expect reciprocal behaviour from the US. Which is not happening. You really have no clue on what the realities of the situation are. I hope the above has filled in some of your knowledge gaps.

The "border problem" is Trump's *excuse.* As he discovered last time, there's a loophole WRT trade and tariffs that eliminates a lot of checks and balances for him if he says he's applying them for "security" purposes. Our border isn't really a primary concern for Trump. Further, because we know that his deportation plans will cause a flood of migrants heading to Canada, the Feds were *already* looking at ramping up border security (though they are now moving faster on that). So it really doesn't matter how secure we make the border; Trump will keep moving the goalposts until he realizes that the tariffs are more of a disadvantage than anything - at which point he'll say Canada did as he asked, declare a victory, and remove them. Our job is to cause enough pain, as quickly as possible in retaliation, to speed up Trump's decision to declare "victory."

Maybe we can stop flooding our steel markets with inferior Canadian structural steel, that crap is everywhere and it's inferior. American structural is better but we can't compete with the cheap Canadian mills.

@goaliefightclub it's so inferior America uses the steele and aluminum in their jets and tanks.👌

@KarmaWillCome government contractor bidding always goes with the lowest bids, cutting costs is the name of the game for defense contractors and their shareholders. I was wondering why the stripped down Abrams tanks have been performing so poorly in ukraine, seems like the armor was just not made well. Hopefully the next generation of Abrams tanks will use Pittsburgh steel, but the government's head shed will always go with the cheapest options.

@goaliefightclub Better scrap the fleet. It's in more then that. But okay.
