The Boox Tab Ultra C certainly interests me. However, I'm waiting to see the Quaderno Gen 3. It is a Carta 1250 screen using Kaleido 3. It'll be available in 13.3 inch size, so big enough for a full A4 paper. It seems to be available on June 16.

Great review and so incredibly honest! I think it's fair to say that color e-ink isn't as exciting as a traditional tablet and there is a general bit of lag that even with very fast refresh rates it's still going to feel slow. But I appreciate how you use it for your work flow for writing and your honest observations. As someone who got the Bigme color when it first came out which was my first eink tablet, all those little things that were "amazing" were aight lol Could be that my entry into color eink isn't the best or could be that I just like zippy electronics, or even a combination of both. Either way, I'm thankful that you voiced the concerns I had as well as pointed out things I hadn't even considered (like typing on eink). Nevertheless, it still seems like an amazing device and I hope you're enjoying it in your work flow. ^-^

How do you upgrade or replace the internal SSD or eMMC storage when it dies or you want more space? Can the user replace the battery when it dies? If you were to use this with a pair of ChromaDepth 3D glasses would the muted colors even permit you to get the stereographic optical illusion these 3D glasses produce from red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet?

honestly i want an e tablet that can assist me through the end of high school and in university, i don’t like the ipads as note taking is a priority and it feels (for lack of better words) shit to hand write on. i would consider a remarkable but i learn better with colour. is this a good option for a student? i’m not interested in watching videos on it and more looking for a way to write notes and annotate material on a singular device to keep everything in one place. are there any better options?

Look into Paperlike for the iPad. It's a screen protector, and it totally changes the way it feels to write on an iPad. I own one myself, and it's much more like writing on paper than a slippery screen. Plus, it helps reduce grease and fingerprints.

My tab ultra C arrived but I noticed that on the left side (the one with the boox name) there is a stripe of 0.3 cm from top to bottom where it is darker more like a shadow. It is really frustrating. Regardless of the light intensity this grayer area is there, the more light the less grayer but is noticeable.

Thanks for this complete test/review. I have a couple question: - might be stupid question but having to use the front light because of the eink filter, does it have blue light effect for the human eye? - have you used the Tab for your office work account? Is it easy to connect and use it with PowerPoint, word, excel & OneNote?

Hello, I have a few questions about this e-ink tablet. I would like to ask you about how switching between resolution(2480 x 1860) for gray mode and resolution(1240 x 930) for color mode looks like? Can I read pdfs in the gray mode with higher resolution(2480 x 1860) on that device? Can the resolution be changed dynamically? 😀

The screen doesn't change resolution. The blacks are 300 PPI and the colors are 150 PPI ... even intermingled.

Thanks for the great review! I wonder how the experience of typing with the screen keyboard is. I work a lot while walking and I'd primarily use this keyboard. But I'm afraid it's too laggy or not sensitive enough to the touch of the finger to type.

If you want a stylus upgrade my favorite is Lamy EMR (not safari), mainly because instead of eraser at the back it has a button that turns the nib into eraser and I think it feels way nicer, with better grip and weight.

I most CERTAINLY noticed the touchy keyboard contacts. It will toggle between connected and not, just by giving it a stern look. That said, I really like the device, and other magnetic case. The keyboard case has it's uses, but most of the time I prefer the non-keyboard case. Thankfully, it is easy to switch back and forth.

Thanks - this is a very good assessment (I work as an editor and writer and recently bought the Tab Ultra C after developing a sight problem). The only thing that's driving me nuts at the moment is not being able to get an en or em dash on the keyboard ! (I typed this on my iPad...) Let me know if you've solved this! (Other than pasting from elsewhere.)
@t0dd000 Жыл бұрын
The size. I have been considering the Boox Tab X (A4 sized). Do you get frustrated at the size of the screen on the Tab Ultra? You are young, so you probably don't have the issues most middle-aged folks, but do you have thoughts on this: screen size, font size, contrast, etc.
@ajwriting Жыл бұрын
That's the main downside. My old E Ink device, a Sony DPT-RP1, has an A4-sized screen, so I need to format my documents a bit differently to make them more eye-friendly on the smaller display. If you're unsure, I'd go for the bigger screen in lieu of color. It makes a difference!
@johnmanley4528 Жыл бұрын
Nice review. Did you say that with the keyboard there is only one angle for the screen?
@ajwriting Жыл бұрын
Yep. Unfortunately, the case only allows the screen to sit at a single angle.

@@ajwriting Thanks. That's disappointing. I assume the one angle it has works for most people. Personally I'm waiting for the Note Air line to get color!

Great review. I am looking for a tablet that I can use as a 3rd monitor for reading PDF and selecting text. Probably no HDMI out here either but, looking forward to the day that the refresh rate is good enough for Windows use. For now, RLCD is the only option. Love the Q5 for that.

I am super excited for this, it's something that I wanted for a long time, and I might actually end up buying it. The one thing I don't like is the keyboard: the Remarkable has a much better-looking one, with two inclination levels and a less finnicky connection. Those might be a deal-breaker for me because if I buy it I will probably want to use it for word editing on the fly too. Hopefully they'll come up with a better keyboard soon...

Thanks so much for the review! I'm interested in how your workflow is, given that you're a writer! I'm a writer as well and am looking for an e-ink tablet so that I could write and edit my manuscript without distraction. Initially I was drawn to the Remarkable 2 but its features are too limited for my use. Then I discovered the Onyx Boox Tab Ultra C (am considering the Tab Ultra X as well) but found your video. Would you recommend it for writers? How do you use the tablet when you're also using Scrivener for writing? Cheers!
@j.s.elliot7121 Жыл бұрын
I am certainly interested in this device. It seems like it'd be perfect for me. (Question: Does the cloud version of Word that would run on it still have full editing capacity, such as with Track Changes and such? Is highlighting passages and commenting on them still seamless?)
@FabriSlv Жыл бұрын
The android version of Word isn't cloud-based, you can use it offline if you have the Office 365 subscription. It does have Tracked Changes, too, though I wouldn't touch formatting while on anything other than the PC/Mac version.

Hello! Does the backlight light make eye strain?
@ajwriting Жыл бұрын
The backlight is more of a "frontlight" in that it mimics sunlight on paper. If you don't get eye strain reading a paper book outside, then this is unlikely to give you eyestrain.

If Onyx were to release the kernel in the future to create a custom ROM or, alternatively, an ARM-based OS with a Linux foundation, it would be fantastic! There are already a thousand distributions out there, and if they added UEFI support as a bootloader, that would be top-notch! I'd buy 100 of these right away, hahaha XD. I say this because spending 650 euros on a tablet/ebook/PC when we know that display technology will change, and Android updates will eventually stop, is a difficult choice to justify. Instead, if they offered something more, we would have the added value of being able to contribute to a large community and have a consistently upgradable product that retains its value over time. I think Onyx should consider this perspective. More popularity would mean the product becomes well-known, reaching a broader audience. Today, few people are willing to spend 650 euros on a tablet; they think twice. But if they could get a device that remains useful and upgradable for many years, it would be a much more appealing choice. From my point of view, if I have to spend 650 euros, I'd rather do it for a laptop than for a device that becomes obsolete and unusable after just 3 years.

Why has nobody bothered trying to take a picture with this? Why is everybody asleep to the fact that these devices are great for documenting things as well as notes and reading if they have a decent camera. it doesn't even have to be fancy. The S6 camera is only 8 megapixels and it's plenty good enough for picture documentation in notes. This tab ultra could be even better but nobody even bothers to push the envelope.

Educational content would benefit a lot by a color e-ink reader. It needed to be as battery saving as e-ink and does not need to be vídeo oriented (high refresh rates). Education-oriented displays must be color. Can't think about History or Chemistry book in B&W today. Led displays will never be as good so as to allow multiple days charge. I simply don't understand why there is no movement in industry towards that. I think government programs alone could give scale enough to justify it as it could not be much more expensive than a Kindle.
