Opel puts an electric engine into a 1970s Manta, The car features a 147 horsepower electric motor. This prototype is a fascinating mix of original and future tech, featuring Opel's Pure Panel integrates an infotainment touchscreen into the dash. With its 31 kWh battery, the Manta has a range of around 200 kilometers.

Ha! I owned a Manta "A" back in the '70s. It was the best car I ever owned and I always wished I could have a like-new one today. Who knew Opel would tease me with one almost 50 years later!

@@serveri69 In the U.S., even when new, parts were a bear to get hold of, and cost an arm and a leg. I can't imagine trying to keep one running today. Also, there are probably very, very few in even fair condition - they weren't tremendously popular, or even promoted.

@@JDoors I am pretty sure that you would get one from Europe with decent price and then engine swap it to modern one. There have been some manta a:s around 10k €.

Well done Opel really understand why you built this EV Manta I actually watched this a few weeks ago and this car really got into my head the design works and it's a really shows the EV Opel/Vauxhall EV design philosophy .Shame it will never go into production EV vehicles really have to be SUV shaped because of the battery location underneath the car.

It does, but since it doesn’t idle, it can be put into gear from a stop without using the clutch. To shift, I would imagine using the clutch is necessary. You can also just stick it in fourth gear, and hit the accelerator pedal.

The range is a bit whack... but, i guess when a dedicated production version will be released, it will be a bit better. This thing seems to have a lot of the old chassis left, which severely limits space for the battery pack.

I suppose you could say I am a bit of a petrol head ,I have a rally Chevette rally Manta B a rally Viva and a Mini Cooper 500 I have also been fortunate enough to have in my working carrier an Ascona 400 right hand drive I was told only two genuine ones were ever built, a Chevette HS a Tickford Carpri a Coswoth Sierra and most of the Ford RS range so I suppose you could say I have been a bit lucky,didnt realise at the time.So although electric cars are not my bag despite our son having a Tesla 3, all I can say is I want one please Opel make them! not sure what my wife will say , she currently drives an AdamS which is bit fortunate as our name is Adams.

2:57 They just put the charging port there because there was a hole already there. This whole thing is pretty lazy, using the exact body of an old car to make a new prototype. Compare this where they just gutted an old car an put an electric motor and a display show to something like the Peugeot E-Legend where it was completely new but with a retro look. Having said that, I had an Opel Manta A and I love that body style. I mean I like the body more than the electric part. There's no way they are going to mass produce this though. Make an ICE version of it.

There are some EV motors in the pipeline that don't use permanent magnets requiring rare earth metals and instead use copper electromagnets. I think they may end up being an improvement on permanent magnet motors.
