Rekeita was spot-on: they treat "superheroes" as a genre instead of a setting. There's so much potential for really thrilling, engaging stories using these IPs that are being ignored because "it wouldn't *feel* like a superhero movie". It's genuinely infuriating, like when they advertised Dr Strange 2 as a full horror movie only to significantly walk it back to the same tired corporate dreck.
@trequor2 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's really unfortunate. The early MCU understood that different heroes should have different kinds of movies. We got a grounded Iron Man fighting terrorists, a terrifying Hulk fighting the us army and a giant beast in Harlem. We got a (pseudo) period piece from Captain America and a heist movie from Antman. ... but then Guardians of the Galaxy arrived and blew the rest of phase 2 away with its unique style. Then corporate decided to emulate that style for every movie and slowly each Marvel movie became the same.
@dragonknightleader12 жыл бұрын
It's also when the Whedonisms went out of control too. Whedon was actually careful about how he wrote his jokes for the most part and never let jokes overpower his characters. GotG characters are jokes first and characters second, which spilled over into the rest of the MCU.

Yep! And the streaming shows had so much potential in that department. They could have been the quirky B-stories to explore settings and plot lines that are too risky or too cheesy for movies. Instead what we got is the same stuff from movies, but spread over 6 episodes. What's the point? Like if Wandavision was 2 hours long it might legit have been better. Because then we wouldn't have had time to go over how bad her mind control was in excruciating detail. Giving these writers more screentime just gave them more rope to hang themselves with.

Completely agree with Nick regarding Guardians of the Galaxy being the turning point for Marvel. Gotta give credit where credit is due, it was their most risky move up until that point as no one outside harcore comic books fans knew who these characters were, but the (well deserved) success of that film taught them all the wrong lessons, and then Thor Ragnarok's success validated these lessons to the point that we're at now. The first Thor, Captain America and Iron Man films had a lot of humor in them but also had a much more serious undertone that has been sorely missing after GOTG.

40:30 Star Wars was inspired by Flash Gordon and pulp sci-fi novels which usually had far weirder stuff than laser swords or dudes with toasters in their chest. The scenario where people at the time didn't believe in the concept actually happened to Walt Disney. So Disney had a lot to prove with Snow White.

This is s why I tell people the best Marvel villain since 2008 is actually a Sony villain..It's Michael Keaton's Adrian Toomes aka The Vulture from Spider-Man Homecoming. He gets into crime for understandable reasons: The government screws him after he invests all his savings into equipment for his crew to clean up in the aftermath of the Avengers battle in NYC , only to have the government tell him at the last second he no longer has the contract because the remnants of the extraterrestrial technology he'd be removing from the city have had the project designated top secret..So he steals some of the tech, has his engineer develop it into weapons and makes his living as a black market arms dealer. He doesn't battle Peter because he's an evil madman trying to take over the world. He does it because he's a businessman who not only has an illegal line of work, but also has a wife and daughter to provide for. It's literally nothing more grandiose than that and, consequently, he's an extremely memorable villain. His scariest scene doesn't even involve super weapons. It's in a car outside of his daughter's prom, where pulls a pistol and tells Peter he knows he's Spider-Man and is willing to let things go because Peter saved his daughter, but if the kid interferes with his business again, he'll kill him and everyone he cares about. It's a chilling scene that works as well as it does specifically because Toomes is as grounded as he is.

But can’t we just have something that’s fun and earnest? I’m 27, if I wanted to be reminded of how depressing life is, I’d look at my student loan debt during my 15 minute break between cleaning toilets at the factory. Lastly, we already had a darker more serious version of Scooby-Doo. It’s called, “Scooby-Doo Escape from Zombie Island” (1998). At 49:23... Yes, Rekieta Law! Yes! I have tried to educate people on this so many times! There are stories about the plot (murder mystery and heist), the people (Soap Opera, Star Trek, Rom-Coms), and the world (Oz, Middle Earth, Avatar). You can mix them to some extent, but there needs to be a primary thread. Too many modern movies switch between them and mix and confuse. The story suffers. The plot suffers. The characters suffer. Modern script writers and directors don't understand writing fundamentals. The Marvel movies should be about the characters. That's where comic books live. It's about the human conflict and how heroes react to situations. They've lost sight of that and are just writing big, flashy, non-sensical world building bullshit. The characters are suffering in service to the extreme and grandiose scope of alternate universes. The story and plot are suffering in service to showing some crazy, large scale. Likewise Star Wars. Amazon's biggest failure in producing Rings of Power is that it focuses on character and completely destroys the world building. Tolkien's writing was about the world of Middle Earth. His characters are two-dimensional and serve as the vessel by which we experience the world. They created the worst fantasy Soap Opera of all time and missed the mark on what we love about Tolkien. Well...the worst fantasy Soap Opera until Willow and Blood Origins came out. When the foundational elements of your project are wrong, it will fail regardless of the talent you throw at it.

Unfortunately for him the agent also happens to be The Rock's wife so I'm guessing that Dwayne gets all the cherry roles and Henry just gets the ones that Dwayne doesn't want or can't do due to scheduling conflicts. Cavill needs a new fucking agent. The man is solid gold.

Yeah, a majority of Marvel's recent fuck-ups have been coming from R&M writers. I mean Dan Harmon's smart and I think he had a hand in majority of the episodes' good writing than the people he actually hired. But when they write on their own, the movies feel like polished turd. This is why I'm afraid for Quantamania, but the only reason I've got at least a sliver of hope is because the dude writing Quantamania wrote the Vat of Acid Episode, in my opinion, one of the best.

Black Mesa is an example a great remake, takes the story of Half Life with no changes, but gives it the best graphics possible and reworks some levels that were frustrating originally while keeping the same overall. Most remakes aren't that good.

Nick, "the force in balance" does not mean an even balance between light and dark. The Light Side is the force in balance, the darkside is a perversion of the natural order. That's why, as Palpatine says, it can grant powers that "some consider to be unnatural." The force has a will of it's own - to use the force means to let the force flow through you. That's why Yoda says "you will know, when you are calm, at peace..." To Luke. The thing that separates the dark side from the light is how it's used. The Sith bend the force to their will, hence the unnatural powers. That's why Sith are harder to kill than Jedi. That's why Jedi heal better than Sith. That's why Sith cannot become one with the force. If balance meant both sides had to be equal, then Sith would be able to join with the force.

On the amount of money GTA5 has made, I wonder what benefit there has been to the artists featured on the various radio stations. For instance, I've bought albums by Little Dragon, Neon Indian, Adolescents, Bob Seger, Waylon Jennings, Suicidal Tendencies and more because I heard their tracks, some for the first time, on GTA5 and snapped them up. One of the best games ever made, I don't have high hopes for the 6th instalment. I'll wait until I read/watch some proper reviews and then decide.

A good point is that money raised increased under Trump's tax cuts, just as they did with Reagan v. Carter. 100% tax rates result in no government tax income, as does 0. However, my understanding is an 18% Federal rate would be optimal. My suggestion would be to eliminate income tax entirely, and use a Federal sales tax of 18%. That would eliminate IRS being needed, as States could use sales tax mechanism to collect Federal taxes, with few exceptions, such as Oregon.

Drinker, if you want to wash the taste of "Glass Onion" out of your mouth, check out the 1944 movie "Laura". It starts out as a boiler plate gumshoe who-done-it until suddenly it's not. Its about a working class detective who has to solve the murder of a beautiful socialite, but he slowly becomes obsessed with the dead woman. It's the movie "Glass Onion" wishes it could be.
