In Ohio, the Government handed control of the spill to the rail company who decided that intentionally stetting it on fire was the best way to clean it up. The two problems is that they did not use an accelerant to burn the chemicals more thoroughly, and they did not bother getting the full list of them. So they knew about the potential carcinogen (vinyl chloride, aka the VC in PVC) that **might** explode, but missed the fact there were two cars of **benzene**, a class A known carcinogen which they spread over 200+ miles. There is no explanation why they did not just use an absorbent to soak the VC up either. They also sent people back home after the fire without conducting ANY tests to verify it was safe. Now that animals and fish are dying off they finally did some and are saying not to drink the water. Of course at this point no one trusts them, and private companies are conducting tests to see if there is grounds for a massive class action against everyone involved.

I'd rate it an above average procedural/detective/spy/adventuire series with excellent writing and excellent acting. It is completely worth buying the box set, and the prequel movie starring Bruce Campbell is better than most TV action movies. The series is exceptionally good as a show to have on in the background. It may have had its flaws, but I did like that Enterprise had the willingness to show the hero ship take a horrific beating at the hands of technologically superior foes. Perhaps that was because its was primarily CGI and they could do that without actually destroying a filming model.
@bob1986
@bob1986 Жыл бұрын
@@MediumRareOpinions That is exactly why. Previous shows had expressed regret that the ships were always pristine because they needed to keep the filming model in as perfect condition as they could because they only had one. The only pre CG Star Trek that actually damaged the Enterprise was the TOS films specifically because of their higher budget.

Someone mentioned "Burn Notice" . The show is amazing. It was made by the USA network back when they were trying to out Sopranos HBO. Monk, White Collar, Psyche,The Closer and Burn Notice were all part of USA trying to become the king of "character driven TV" they literally marketed this new batch of shows and channel makeover with commercials stating "We have Characters". Think of it as a much more reality based 80's"MacGuyver"/70's"Rockford Files" hybrid. At times it feels like an episode of the A-Team where they know how to aim and don't mind killing people. Burn Notice centered around Michael Weston a CIA agent who "Got Burned" which means the agency he worked for notified all other intelligence agencies in the US that he was no longer one of their assets(played by Jeffery Donovan AKA:Glasses from shot caller). The pilot starts with him working an OP for the agency and after it is over his handler informs him he has been burned. He gets drugged and wakes up in Miami which is his original home town. No passport, no money, no credit cards, and his actual identification is wanted by the state, but they are not actively looking for him as long as he doesn't make waves. Retired against his will, but not killed so.... He winds up having to deal with the family he ran away from and joined the Army to escape 20 years ago. His mother played by Sharon Gleiss is tied for the coolest "real Mom" I have seen in a show or movie with Jane Kackmarek on "malcom in the middle". She chain smokes, drinks beer, swears, and has an 8th degree black belt in guilt. "I have worked for the CIA on 5 continents, I am highly proficient in 7 forms of unarmed combat and if it shoots or stabs I most likely have an expert certification in its field use but I have yet to find a defense against the sound of my Mother crying." His brother is a conman scumbag with gambling and drinking problems, His ex girlfriend(Gabrielle Anwar Bikini Model/Actress) who he met on an operation infiltrating the IRA is hiding in exile in Miami dealing guns to drug dealers after offending a few members of a more terrorist friendly branch of the organization. Sir Bruce Campbell plays "Sam Axe" a retired Navy Seal-power drinking-womanizer who is working his way thru every rich widow in miami beach gigolo style trading war stores about his scars for top shelf booze , Rolexs, condominiums and Cadillacs. If Sam is not actually driving, shooting or punching someone he has a beer or a real drink in one of his hands. The producers take full advantage of their setting, meaning every meeting between agents and/or the core cast happens at a bar near a pool or the beach otherwise Sam will not show up and there is always a ton of extras straight off of a poster for Hawaiian Tropics or The Sweedish Bikini Team. In one first season scene Anwar is accompanying Weston to a meeting at the bar by the pool at a hotel and she is wearing sunglasses,sky high stiletto heels, a scarf, and a skin tight little black dress that requires two hair cuts. The entire way to the table they are passing what looks like a cheese cake calendar cattle call. "You should have told me we were coming here Michael, I over dressed" Very narration heavy. However one of the best parts of the show is Weston's inner monologue. The writer of the show uses the industry name "Matt Nix" and is supposedly a former operative. Not sure if it is just blair witch shtick to sell the show, or an excuse for a writer actually knowing how to do all of this spy shit. Before anyone says anything about stealing the black Impala from Supernatural, Burn Notice came first and the two brothers argued over who their dad would have wanted to have that car for almost the entire show run. Think of the show as "Two Alpha-Alphas, a female bikini model-sniper- explosives expert and the best TV Mom ever against Miami."
@From-North-Jersey

I would like to add that the final appearance of "Mrs Weston" crowns her as the toughest , coolest, feminine woman in fiction and Queen of the Moms. "This is for my boys". I'm getting misty just thinking about it.

Drinker I second the recommendation of burn notice. It is a fun action packed spy show from the mid 2000s. The lead Micheal is a badass burned spy trying to find out who burned him and why. You have an actual strong female character in Fiona who loves blowing things up. Then you have the former navy seal best friend Sam Ax. Played by the legend Bruce Campbell. The story can get a bit long in the tooth in the later seasons but it still a fun watch

I want to share my initial reaction to TLJ, since you guys talked about it. I watched it with my family and IMMEDIATELY noticed the many off-putting things: the destruction of Luke's character, Rey being overpowered and perfect, Admiral Holdo lecturing Poe for the sake of feminism - just a bunch of modern day political crap. After we finished the movie, I said to my mom and sister "Doesn't it seem like there was a ton of annoying political messaging in there?" At the time I had trouble putting my disgust with the film into words. "I didn't notice that" said my mom. "I thought it was good." Said my sister. I thought maybe I was the crazy one. I thought maybe I was too easily annoyed by feminist messages in films. But the more I thought about, the more I knew that my initial reaction of disgust was correct and warranted. Then I found Mauler, Drinker and Nerdrotic on KZbin, and realized that I wasn't alone. Thank goodness!

On the topic of "wanting to hate things", I went into _Glass Onion_ ready to see Rian in his natural element to see what he would bring me. Right off the bat, the movie pisses me off with the wooden box being technologically impossible magic bullshit carpentry. But then there's the scene where after everyone's oohed and ahhed over the box, hard cuts to the woman on her own who has zero interest and just wants to know what the fuck she's looking at, and just whacks it open with a hammer. With no dialogue, I immediately know the dynamic between her and the other people we saw before, even if the details come later. It's a good scene. And that was me the whole movie. Bullshit, bullshit, bullshit, _good scene,_ bullshit. I genuinely like the scene where Detective Benoit tells Miles off for inviting a group of people with valid grievances against him into a secluded location to play a "murder mystery" like it's all a game to him. Good scene, well acted. _And then the movie reveals that Benoit was bullshitting the whole thing and the scene is totally meaningless_ 📦 🔨

My mom, grandma, niece, aunt, father and all in-laws know who Luke Skywalker is. None of them could give a shit less about whatever hot new video game character may be. Just because video games are pilfering tons of treasure from idiotic teen boys captured in the pay to play, DLC traps, doesn't mean they are winning in the general audience. Point of fact, my nephew has spent a cool grand on Fortnite. Add up the entire theater tickets he's enjoyed in his entire life, he doesn't scratch a quarter of that value. So, he's played one game, spent more than he's spent on hundreds of movies in his short life. I just take issue with too many people equating revenue with reach and impact. Outside the gamer culture (which isn't big at all) and teenage kids, the scope of Hollywood, Bollywood, and the movie industry in total is massive in comparison.

Some won't watch for the same reason that I personally wouldn't eat at a restaurant what has served bad food and offered bad service for the last 4 times I went. No matter how good it may be now based on what reviewers have said, I have no intention of going again nor taking the risk because of the bad experiences I have had. But my customer decision would not be based on the objective quality of the service NOW. I wouldn't know as I never went. *That is still a valid judgement to make BUT it is one not based on the objective quality of the product at the moment.*

The problem with modern cinema in a nutshell. They don’t know how to divide comic relief moments. Although welcome (at the right time), it completely breaks the immersion when something serious is happening, and then someone makes an offhanded snarky remark (Especially if it’s fueled by politics) just because. Anyways, cheers guys, keep up the good work. Go away now!

I've been thinking... All artistic engagement hinges on an emotional response from the viewer. The art itself has no feelings, the artist does but unless he's there physically, his feelings don't matter to the viewer. These responses are influenced by a lot of things and since we are all human, those things are sometimes totally separate from objective quality. So in that light, if the meta around Picard is so sour to a potential customer then they won't touch it despite its objective quality. And nor should they because their emotional engagement is already negative. I disagree with what I think Mauler's take is. While I support and fundamentally agree with his work to study and judge art based on its objective quality. It's important to remember that the art's objective quality is not the same thing as one's emotional engagement with it.

These sensitivity readers are ridiculous. I have Binge Eating Disorder and my weight does feel out of my control a lot of the time, but I don't want the word 'fat' removed from books. I don't want anything like that done on my behalf, and I think the majority feel the same. It's just a bunch of woke morons who aren't even from the demographic they're supposedly defending who decide to overedit everything. It gives them a sense of control and feeds their raging egos (no pun intended). I loved those books as a kid and I still do now. Thankfully I have my copies with the word 'fat' still firmly intact. They'll have a field day if they ever get their hands on the Harry Potter books...

If you watch a movie made from beginning to end by AI and don't notice it's missing anything, it isn't missing anything. Humanity isn't magic, there's no reason an AI can't mimic it perfectly. It obviously isn't there yet, but I really can't see why that future frightens you
@dearthofdoohickeys4703

AI and humans are fundamentally different. Even a “perfect” imitation of humanity could only ever an _imitation_ of humanity. That’s not mimicry, it’s counterfeiting. And if you can’t see why that’s frightening, it’s because your blind to the potential misuses of that level of technology. But all of that is theoretical. Right now AI is just tool a used by other humans. There’s no reason to be scared of it, only the intentions of the people using it.

I was willing to give Picard a fair go, but seeing as they are running around copyright striking any review videos, manually, they have blown it before I even got a chance to watch the thing. Sorry mate. Kurtzman has to be shown the door. Its a beloved franchise. Some of my first memories were the theme tune to original trek, because my mum was a rabid fan. I grew up with it, and I genuinely miss it, but we have to stand our ground. The captain of the ship is incompetent. He doesn't even know port from starboard. He has no idea of navy anything and it shows. Oh how it shows. Trek needs a new captain. Until then I'm steering clear of it.

Perhaps it's just time to draw a line under all of the Star Trek, Star Wars, the MCU a DC Cinematic Universes. How about, once Holywood has gotten over its sulky, teenage moment and ditched woke, it has a look at creating new creative sci-fi franchises. How about something set in Larry Niven's 'Known Space' books (Ring World, Man-Kzin Wars etc) there's a whole lot there. How about a series about Harry Harrison's 'Stainless Steel Rat' books. Or Roger Zelazny's Amber books, or Asimov's future worlds. Sci-fi has such riches it seems rather a waste to spend any further on these creatively bankrupt properties.

@MauLerYT 56:50 This is a pretty bad take as far as analogies go. Why would you return to a restaurant that gave you food poisoning (because that’s what Picard is being likened to by many, not simply a ‘bad meal’) a second time, much less a *third*?! The show itself is a negative feedback loop. The 3rd season is not a standalone story and requires viewers watching the first two seasons for full context. But since those seasons are so god awful, many discerning viewers wouldn’t make it to the third after watching the first and/or second. Also, as S3 is not a standalone product, rewarding S3 with viewership and praise rewards Secret Hideout for also producing S1 and S2, regardless of how much you previously criticized them. These things do not exist in a vacuum but in a progressive chain of fanbaiting and fanhating.

@@TheManInBlack11 right, but based on that premise. that these were "bad meals," it makes sense that you wouldn't abandon the restaurant after the first visit. You're arguing they weren't bad meals (that' they're poisoned). You're free to think that, but it's subjective.
