You should make a video covering the Audi EA855 2.5 TFSI from the RS3/TTRS. Its a very unique and not so well known engine with loads of tuning potential.

I thought the crack was because of engine knocking and with modern sensors were preventing the cracking that's why the horsepower of the new engines. The modern methods of casting would increase the structural integrity of the engine but the ECU tuning should effectively eliminate this problem.

If I remember right, the M54B30 engine in my BMW Z3 3.0i had an open deck. From my past experiences I would say I prefer a closed deck. They're just stronger like you said and there's less of a chance of failure for head gaskets and cylinders. But the newest car I have ever owned is a 2007 LS engine so like you stated Im sure the technology has gotten much better for open decks and they are more efficient at cooling so if manufactures can make them stronger then by all means go for it!

Modern sensors and tuning capacity allows for squeezing out as much power from blocks without causing as much damage to them... A modern well tuned open block is capable of high hp gains... Thanks for the video...

This was awesome! Now I understand a bit more why a close deck was recommended if I were going to push my N14 mini Cooper up into the five and 600 hp range. Sounds like some good forged Carillo rods and pistons would be all I would need if I kept it around 400 WHP though.

Thank you! You explained it clearly and succinctly My old Mercedes SL has perhaps a unique engine property. They completely redesigned the M119 V8 block in late 1993 from closed deck to open deck Supposedly besides saving manufacturing cost it's a bit more economical. I understand with open deck the coolant is flowing all around the cylinders so it must displace heat far more efficiently The SL does seem to run to operating temperature very quickly Can you think of any other engine that kept its nomenclature and went from one style to the other?

I worked some years on a engine refurbishment shop and guess what?? Every single open deck engine I have ever worked on, was warped on the head surface! While closed deck is more like 50-50, closed deck is 100%. You don't even need to measure the gasket surfaces!

The basic question is are you running twins or a big single. Just like nitrous if your Making alot of torque under 3k your creating the most stress possible. Then are you running a manual transmission and are you at a reduced gear ratio. These are thoughts you should have in your head that and if you close the deck can you keep it cool. With today's piston coatings , methanol injection and e85 we don't necessarily need to close the deck semi or fully closed. Last are you running an accurate progressive nitrous coming in late with reduced gearing , colder plugs and what is your compression ratio vs stock and cast pistons or weak rods/ direct port injection. Don't forget 0w-40 and soft or oil underfloowed crank or sub pat bearings . Identify- what is my engines weakness areas? Don't forget tuning and preventing detonation. This is the new school of thought cross referenced against your transmission specifics and shift points/rpm.

A closed deck is deffo the way to go if you plan on pushing big HP and very high boost levels. One of the weaknesses of the n55 engine in the BMW m135i's and m235i's back in the day was they were open deck and these engines suffered because of it. This is why I believe BMW moved away from it with the b58 and went closed deck.

very good video, very correct in technical terms. it only seems you are always trying to defend open block after an argument for closed block design ;) in a technological comparison closed block is simply better, the reason for open block is only the cost factor and probably overall powertrain efficiency. subscribed :)

Why do manufactures use Open Deck? Japanese manufactures aside, obviously .... so greedy car manufacturers can sell another car, to idiots that don't learn, when their engine goes - pop! And if you think Open decks aren't a problem nowadays, you've obviously never heard of the Ford Motor Company!

In terms of fun factor, what would you suggest: the “factory rally cars/300hp Hot Hatches” available nowadays like the Ford Focus RS and Toyota GR Corolla Circuit Edition vs. used classic “factory rally cars” but well treated and maintained ones (i.e. trailer queens turned track day weapons) in the form of EVOs and Subbie STis?

You don't discuss the power levels from one to the other, making your argument null and void. Modern High Performance Engines, then you reference garbage ... lol. You are correct in your explanation, but clueless as to why.
