Open strings are surprisingly helpful no matter what level you’re at. Even for tricky passages in upper level material sometimes just practicing the bowing pattern on open strings can help out a lot.

I can think of 3 pieces from the top of my head that can benefit from open string exercises!

This has got to be the best instrument tutorial I’ve come across. Because of all the specifics you carefully discuss, you make it seem like learning the violin is mot as difficult as everyone makes it seem. I do have a question that wasn’t quite answered. When playing these open notes is “playing down” a note played, and “playing up” another note, or is down then up a single note played? I hope this makes sense, I’m brand new to this instrument, and want to have the correct understanding from the start.

It can be whatever variety of notes you want. I just specific down bow and up bows as individual strokes but the same note. With open strings, you’re always looking for quality of sound. Hope this helps and welcome to our community!

Stumbled on your treasure of a video - than you Eric for the insights and detailed guidance! I have a question: at around 7'27", am I correct in understanding that we need to keep our bow fingers in the same position no matter which point we are at during the bow stroke? E.g., at the end of the down bow, we should not let our pinky leave the bow (which currently happens to me) and nor our curved fingers become straighter, correct? Wishing you a fantastic new year :)

Depends on how long your arms and fingers are! If your arms are on the shorter side, then it’s likely you may have some to lift your pinky off.

How do you prevent bouncing when doing long bows?
@veragurskaya6373 ай бұрын
I also encountered this issue. First, check your posture. Everything should be free: neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, fingers. Second, check your bow holding. It took me a week to figure out how to hold a bow because it depends on the length of your arm and fingers. Don't do crabs from your fingers; don't do a mountain from your wrist. Let the bow go smoothly. Just put it down on a string and lead it. Don't put any pressure on playing in the middle of it. Keep checking your right hand repeatedly; I mean the hand with a bow if you are right-handed. All fingers should be rounded, no crabs from your fingers, no mountain from your wrist. Consolidate the feeling free bow leading and gradually expand along the entire length of the bow. Ensure nothing is frozen: neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, fingers. As for me, my problem was in the bow holding. It was too frozen in my wrist.

@@veragurskaya637 thank you. this is what my teacher has been telling me. I am so stiff. 😭😭😭 when she calls it out i let go but when i play a note incorrectly i tense up and everything goes into shambles. I will try better. Its just my 3rd week learning the violin and i only learn during weekends. Thank you again.

@@jaesinkim5726 don't try to play notes for now. Try to take open strings. I believe in you! You can do it! Relax. Put out the violin and bow for now. Shake yourself. Stand straight and sturdy. Open your shoulders like you're gonna fly, raise your left hand, and imagine a violin in it. The palm is open. Slightly turn your head to your left palm and imagine a mirror in it. This is your violin pose. Remember it. Repeat it. Imagine a bow in the right hand. Raise your right hand as you play the violin. Where is your right shoulder? Where is your right elbow? Where is your right wrist? Where are your fingers? The shoulder is down and relaxed. The elbow is also down (let's take our image A string). Fingers are rounded and secure. See, your right wrist is participating as well! I know it is hard to control everything. But you don't have as long as you follow your body

Can I play hymns using open strings on violin?

Of course, it depends on which key you’re playing in.

I found that my bow-heel sounded like an injured donkey-not only the heel but about 1/6 of my bow in the bottom part. I played on this part of the bow again and again to find a clear sound, and yes, I found it just do not put pressure on it, even lift a bow little
