Great point, they’re doing this out of pocket so sending them something as a thanks would be helpful for sure.

Yes! I am absolutely doing this to my 2010 Black MacBook. I've only been hanging on to that because I knew eventually there'd be some fun project I could do with it. This is it. Thank you!

You’re welcome! It really is one of the easiest things you can do. Sonoma might drag a bit but the great thing is they give you a whole list of prior releases to find what works best with your hardware.

well I have 2009 macbook pro I got off eBay last year for 70$ and it's been fun to use to test out some games and even dual boot windows 7 from this era. However not being able to update to the latest OS or use programs I would daily drive with like steam, discord etc has been a pain though. Thank you so much for this and again.. keep up the good work.

That did the job!👍👍 I have a 2008 MBP., with the maximum 8 gig., of ram ., installed and a 240 gig ssd., 2.4 GHz., core 2 duo CPU., and it works well with Linux Mint Mate installed.

@@IkesVintageTech It's a 17 inch MBP., and I particularly like the keyboard, being a core 2 duo it's a bit slower than more modern computers, but it's fast enough for me, there were some glitches to start with, but thankfully those are currently sorted, I have noticed that it works best if the battery is kept fully charged, so I use it with the charger plugged in.

Double check the supported model page. I think 2007/8 may have been the cutoff. Depends on the max OS that Apple will allow. I have a black MacBook that won’t take the update but it’s one of the first gen.

just a sidenote for everyone who wants to install Sonoma, 16GB USB drive is a no go for Sonoma. Use 32GB. Sonoma works better than Monterey on my Macbook Pro 2015 13 inch

Yeah, mentioned that later in the vid when I noticed it took up just over 16GB.

Sonoma runs great on a 2013 trashcan Mac Pro, amazingly. It does NOT run well on a 2012 iMac though.
@IkesVintageTechАй бұрын
Those iMacs had a wide range of CPU’s from trash to excellent. If you happened to have one of the high end ones I bet it would handle it well. Intel i3, not so much…
@windowsuser321Ай бұрын
@@IkesVintageTech It's an i5, not an i3. It has the GT640M and 8GB RAM. The problem is the spinning hard disk, I would replace it with an SSD but I am really not prepared for surgery on a 2012 iMac - which is supposed to be one of the hardest to work on! But I like my trashcan, it's such a weird computer though. I like strange computers though, with my Molar Mac and neon green Alienware.

Hi, I'm running a mid 2011 27 inch Imac which boots from an external SSD drive using Thunderbolt connection. I want to upgrade to Sonoma from High Sierra. I downloaded the latest version of OCLP, but when I opened the app, the post install Root Patch button is Greyed out. Is this normal ? Does this mean there is a compatibility issue with my computer ? Thanks for your help.
@IkesVintageTech17 күн бұрын
Not exactly sure but maybe external drives aren’t supported, I could be wrong. I’d check the FAQ on the OCLP site and see if they got any tips.

You forgot to mention the unsupported iMacs that do have a metal graphics card. According to the Open Core Legacy Patcher people, upgrading from Monterey, which works great, to Sonoma could be challenging. They are working on this, but they are not quite there.

7/29/24 Like you said in your video I have some old Apple Macs I like to upgrade that included the following a Like new Late 2006 24" Apple iMac with 4GB of memory, 250gb HD, running OS Lion that I have issues with running on the Internet trying to find Internet browser that will run well. I get scared off trying to install anything newer for OS cause of all the steps needed to fix any issues if it ends up not working, or figuring what to do when driver need updating. I like to get something that as easy as when you first get to install the OS the first time you use your mac, so my question to you is this possible, or where could I go and have some computer tech that do this at a reasonable cost?
@IkesVintageTechАй бұрын
I recommend checking the compatibility list to see what works best for your Mac. I believe the 2006 just misses the cutoff as the first iMac I see is from 2007. dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Legacy-Patcher/MODELS.html

Does anyone know if Apple can really ban an Apple ID if we use it to log into a hackintosh? I need to do this for development purposes cause I have no way of getting Xcode 15.4 on Monterrey but not at the cost of getting banned and effectively bricking my other devices. If any devs are using this workaround and it’s legit, please let me know. Thank you!

I have never had an issue to date, not saying they can’t but it’s never happened to me.

This is a good video but guy remember that these updates aren’t compatible with older macs for a reason. I got greedy and decided to run sonoma on a late 2013 iMac. Here’s what happened. Safari would not work. My mouse kept disconnecting. WiFi wouldn’t work even though I was using Ethernet. Apps wouldn’t load. Constantly having to restart. I suggest only upgrading to one version above what your Mac is compatible with. So if it’s catalina I suggest only upgrading to Big Sur. I had to do a full factory reset and re install of Mac OS X and then reinstall all updates up to catalina. DO NOT GO TO SONOMA ON UNSUPORTED MACS YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
@IkesVintageTechАй бұрын
It depends on the model of course, I have been daily driving a 2014 Mini and this particular 2012 MacBook Pro for months without issue. I’d say the 2010 and earlier Macs might be better suited with an earlier revision of MacOS

@@IkesVintageTech must be just me then mate. Once I reinstalled yosemite my Mac was so fast. But unfortunately nothing works with that Mac OS anymore so I have to use Catalina or Big Sur

Did you try the post installation patcher?
@ettchaАй бұрын
😂 I just had to be the one for whom this failed! After agreeing to the license and picking a drive, the installation errors out to "An error occurred while preparing the installation. Try running this application again." The fix I found to spoof SMBIOS(?) also failed and just turned my machine into a 2017 model after rebooting, getting it kicked out of my account as a new device. Trying another guide as I might have messed up a step on the menus that didn't show here, but I suspect my bad luck will hold... Oh well

Started from scratch and somehow, the installation USB got done in a quarter of the previous time! Could that have been the source of my issues? Installation actually started this time which is one step further than before! Hope I haven't jinxed it!

In the end it’s still software from people that do this as a passion project. Things can hang when billion dollar companies send an update. So in all it’s amazing the process is as smooth as it is lol.
