@ivanmytube10 ай бұрын
It’s a bit naive to think like that. What Apple wants is to ask you to paid full price for a replacement machine with only little additional/improved features or a little faster machine. Apple is very mind that you just pay so little but thinking of getting so much support.

Not quite like watching 'paint dry' just better. I did have one question though - My MP 5,1 (upgraded 4,1) has Ventura 13.6.7 and there is an update of Safari waiting which I believe will have a security update inside. I tried entering the command "sudo chmod -R 777 /Volumes/YourVolumeName" in the Terminal with my volume name, it asked for my password, seem to accept it as normal and I still can't write lets say a Folder at the disk level. I tried then to do it manually via the Information it says "That I do not have the permissions required"! I did these operation as "user" and as it didn't worked I repeated them after having activated it as "root". Any suggestions are more then welcome Thank again

I’m not sure what you’re trying to accomplish, but if you’re trying to modify the system or portions of the root library, Sudo won’t get you there as its not owned by the root. It’s read only partition in the APFS as it’s a container format. It’s presented transparently to the user.

Not sure what you mean by safe for users. iCloud features should work as should sleep but check your particular model compatibility on the OpenCore Legacy Patcher site. Any answers I'd give would likely come from their official website. As far as backdoors, I'd suggest asking at the OpenCore community but it is an opensource project with many developers contributing, meaning any malicious code would be bound to be spotted by other developers and which one of larger appeals of Opensource projects, anyone can examine said code.

@dmug Жыл бұрын
So.... your linux install was probably for BIOS and not EFI. What this means is if you hold down the Option key you should see it as a bootable volume but you probably won't see it with OpenCore's boot loader. Basically, it should still be a boot option. I'd check in with the opencore groups on the internet (reddit, facebook, discord, macrumors forums etc)

@@dmug I had a tech group partition my drive and put in Linux for me. Before I installed Open Core, I had 3 boot options, holding down the option key on Start up: Mac HD, Mac Restore and EFI. With option key I get the Open Core booter or Mac HD, which if I choose Mac HD, I get a no go sign. But I can still see stuff in the drives and it is still split, I just don't know how to extract and re-partition to pull out what may be the linux. Will OpenCore Legacy Patcher be used to support Apples early M Series chips when they become redundant and longer supported by future versions of MacOS
@dmug5 ай бұрын
We are probably about 3-5 years from this being a concern and that’ll largely depend on the technical feasibility of it and if the team members of OpenCore are interested in Apple Silicon at all. Most likely it wouldn’t be OpenCore as OpenCore is UEFI based and Apple Silicon uses custom firmware. Apple silicon has more in common with iOS devices when it comes to firmware than an x86 Mac.

Nope. This comes up now and again in my comments. Unfortunately, it's easier to port drivers from older OSes to modern ones than vice versa and the demand isn't there from the community. Most people who need to run old OSes will either buy an old machine for that use case, or use a virtual machine or more likely, figure out a work around or abandon said software. Mac Mini 2009s are practically free. Those will run OS X 10.8 and do it reasonably well. You could screen share into said computer.

It’s an open source project so there’s a lot of eyes on it. there’s nothing inherently preventing privacy violation in OpenCore via kext injection. Yes, someone could develop malware and make it as part of a OpenCore configuration but being open source, this almost certainly would not make it into any sort of distribution as the project maintainers would not accept said code. Someone could alter it or include their malicious but then it wouldn't be from the official repo. I would recommend checking out OpenCore groups for a better break down. If you're fearful of OpenSource, a lot of core technologies that power macOS are opensource, down to the terminal with ZSH or it's networking code like SMB or Apache. Open source has it's pros and cons, but generally for security is viewed as positive.

@@dmug thanks for the reply. I wouldn’t ask you for advice on personal security, only on how you use this technology. So do you trust it with your personal data like using banking apps and passwords, iCloud, etc? Do you know of others using and trusting it in that manner too? I just don’t see the point in doing it, if I can’t use it as a personal computer. I mean what are all these people using it for?

@@mofosoto I'd highly recommend taking your security concerns to an OpenCore group, they exist on Reddit, Facebook, MacRumors, etc. There's no more security risk here than running, say, a Hackintosh. Changes are being injected into macOS via boot loader, and they aren't nefarious. Using OpenCore doesn't lower macOS's security either as you don't have to disable core technologies like SIP. The developers of OpenCore do not gain access to your passwords or encryption keys. In fact, the changes are injected long before most of the networking that'd be required to handle such changes is even loaded, and it'd require some gymnastics to insert the sort of malware that'd be required to siphon data. There are thousands if not hundreds of thousands, of users of OpenCore who use it daily as a way to run a Hackintosh or extend old life to an old machine and use it with personal data. Thus far, there have been no reports of suspicious packages, network activity or computer behavior, or mass data theft from users of OpenCore. At some point with, say, a keylogger, said malware would need to send the data _somewhere_ to be useful. Plus, the project is hosted on GitHub, which has its own TOS. Malware cannot be hosted on GitHub as it violates it. They do have some tools that scan for common nefarious packages, so said malware authors would also have to be tricky enough to evade basic detection and the many, many eyes of people who are using OpenCore and viewing its source code. It's in the realm of reality it could be stealing your data, but I'd consider it very unlikely. If you don't feel comfortable using? Then the answer is simple, don't. However, I'd recommend reaching out to people who are even more versed than me as I do not daily drive OpenCore.

@@dmug before I do that, I want to ask first. is it illegal to install sonoma using ocpl on an old unsupported macbook. Is there a written policy from apple that prohibits using an unofficial os? are we breaking the rules?
@dmug3 ай бұрын
@@KayuSungkai-gu7kqdoes it violate the EULA? Probably. Is it legally enforceable? Hasn’t been tested in the court of law and will depend on regional jurisdiction. In the USA since there’s no profit motive, much like hackintoshes, the economics of trying to go legal on OpenCore doesn’t math in their favor. It’s in legal limbo almost certainly and no real threat from Apple.

I’d check in with one of the OpenCore groups: they exist on Reddit, Facebook, discord and macrumors. Be sure to include your hardware and OCLP versions, and details about the issue. You may need to zap the NVRAM and then reset the default boot to the OpenCore bootable volume, by using the default boot picker using command option.

Opencore is for running macOS on non supported hardware. OpenCore legacy patcher is only for old Macs. It is a subset of OpenCore but not for hackintoshes.
