As someone who studied biology in high school and got my Bachelors of Science degree in Biology in college, I can confirm that using a microscope is indeed extremely fun. I think it is a beautiful gift for a 16 year old aspiring scientific mind. It needs to be placed somewhere safe, though, as they are heavy objects with glass lenses and slides and very delicate pieces of expensive equipment. I know Bailey will be a very responsible user.

Bailey and several others of your children need to watch Journey to the microcosm. Hank Green is involved in it but he’s not the main one. There’s some other person that sets up the camera and stuff. It’s quite good although it got tedious to me because I can’t see very well so I don’t watch it regularly but Bailey Shirley would enjoy it and Parker and Duncan. Your little science guy is there and Jacob would really enjoy it I think and they get to see him moving around at all whereas when you do a prepared slide a lot of times, you squish it and you don’t get to see it moving. Hope she has fun with that tool!😊 my in

Happy Birthday to Bailey! I wanted to tell her that I worked in pathology for years and we dealt with specimens that were removed from the body, i.e. like during surgery, so we would routinely get gallbladders, colons, and other tissues (biopsies) from the human body. It is very interesting how these tissues are prepared so that the pathologist can then look at them under the microscope to determine if there are any abnormalities present. So glad that you are interested in this area of science. Cytology is also another specialty that uses microscopes in order to examine fluid from the body, i.e. sputum, urine, pericardial fluid (from around the heart), pleural fluid (from around the lungs), etc. It looks like you had a great time in New Orleans. I am from Texas and we visited once. It definitely is like another country there with a lot of interesting things to see and great food to eat!

Hey Bailey the human blood is incredible! If you have blank slides you can clean a pin with alcohol and your finger and prick your finger and watch what happens under the microscope, I can see you will have so much fun seeing all the micro organisms

lol it's funny how you were talking about the blood smear portion. i am a clinical laboratory scientist and I work as a hematologist in a hospital lab. we read blood smears all day long and we only need one drop from a CBC blood draw to make it. those blood smears are highly important in determining a patients blood diagnosis (ex. cancers, anemias). people don't know much about my field, but it really is fascinating. I use a microscope everyday and love it!
