A great review of what is either a really cool or really disappointing little toy. I'm still really glad you're back! Bachmann got it a bit wrong. "Gandy Dancer" is a term American railroadmen once used to describe track maintenance crews. Most normal people here (in North America) just call it a handcar and always have.

Bachmann began making those in the 1980's, I believe. I have an old one and it suffers from two problems -- Overheating and the slightest bit of fluff or hair jams up the main gear. It's very fiddly to disassemble for service. But I love it, even with its flaws.

Always loved this pump car, had a go with a real one in Germany once, fun times.
@judahmac17996 жыл бұрын
Bachmann over here in the US is actually on the lower end of pricing and detail. The steam locos don't get opening fireboxes and cab roof doors like Bachmann Branchline does. However, Bachmann USA does offer a lot more locos with DCC sound.

Here in NZ we call it Jiggers, but they are of different design, with one handle you push and pull with a few buds on each side, and they have seats

These Bachmann HO hand cars can be found for sale on eBay where sellers often mistakenly call them N scale due to their small size. In scale, they are very much over-sized compared to their prototypes. Pump cars vanished from American railroads when when gasoline-powered "speeders" took their place. (Bachmann also made working HO American style speeders.) In turn, speeders were replaced by "hi-rail" vehicles which can operate on both road and rail.

A velocipede on a railway generally refers to something a little different. They are 3 wheeled hand pumped rail vehicles. Imagine a bike on one rail with an outrigger supporting it on the other rail. Unlike a bike, they're powered by pumping the handlebars front and back instead of pedals. As for the term gandy dancer for a car, even in the US that is a bit of a misnomer. The term does actually mean a track worker, specifically the ones who would allign the track with bars. The team of guys would shove their bars in time to a song for coodination, hence the term dancer. I'm not quite sure why bachmann decided to call it that, but they've made those for decades and they've always used that odd name.

Another great review, always liked something about those gandy dancers, think its the quirkiness. Also nice to see my s stock appear fro the third review running, its starting to become a celebrity guest by the looks of things, i shall have to get a display cabinet with a plaque ready for when she returns. Keep up the good work as always. Ash

I know various names seem to survive for this little cart, but as far as I know the USA have always called the cart a Gandy-Dancer perhaps because of the name given to the 'navvies.'

This "joke" is quite old now; I remember I saw the 1st on a modell fair in the end of the 90's. My club has 2 (or maybe a 3rd in pieces) of these and those are a lot of pain to run. The axles needs to be well oiled, the wheels, and the track must be cleaned often, and the motor overheats fast, so about 1 hour running maximum allowed - than cleaning, and rest - and do to its size (and 1 axle driving) its very "layout sensitive". We usually run these on a small tram "demo" table where there are no points (or any other extras). Bachmann also has a small working rail-car (and a bus too) witch is very small too, but much more usable. If u want to see something really small in loco look at the Busch H0f mining locos (like: item-code 12115) .

I've never seen a hand car outside of North America! Do any British examples survive? There are some small rail museums in North America (mostly within an old depot) in which the hand car is their biggest piece of equipment! I'm surpised that Bachmann UK imports Bachmann USA items, but not the other way around! There's quite a few British moddelers in North America, but At least hornby sells some of theri British trains in north America!
@ronclark97246 жыл бұрын
Try ModelRailwayImports in Ontario a mail order place with a website and phone number you can place a order. They will ship to America through Canada Post and US Mail. While their inventory isn't large, they will attempt to get an item when possible...

In french, we say draisine (the second pronunciation was the good one), but for this exemple you must add "à main" (with hands) because the draisine is actuated by the feets like a bicycle. like this one : www.molignee.be/draisines/draisines.htm En français, on dit draisine (la deuxième prononciation était la bonne), mais pour cet exemple il faut ajouter "à main" car la draisine est actionnée par les pieds comme une bicyclette. comme celui-ci:www.molignee.be/draisines/draisines.htm En la franca, ni diras draeninon (la dua prononco estis la bona), sed por ĉi tiu ekzemplo vi devas aldoni "à ĉefa" (kun manoj) ĉar la drazo estas agita per la aferoj kiel biciklo. kiel ĉi tiu: www.molignee.be/draisines/draisines.htm
