The loco is based on a GWR experimental oil burner loco (which was soon converted to coal..). It's known as the Holden 101 class. As far as I know, only one of them was ever built.

I think these sets are the best mate! I already have the Caledonian Belle set, which is a basic starter set, with an 0-4-0 loco, plus 1 wagon & 1 passenger carriage, similar to the one in your vid mate! I bought it in the local toy store after getting drunk in the pub mate, cos I needed to get home after, lol! Good vid & nice to see it running mate! 👍🚂🚃🚃🚃😁👍

This is the first venture into Hornby for my son of 3 years under supervision of course and myself, I have fitted the track to a floor boarding baseboard and expanded the track via the Hornby expansion packs A,B & C. I was impressed enough to buy a second starter pack from my local Hornby concession a LMS Night Mail Train for the loco and coaches and spares should they be needed. Think we both have caught the model train bug....just need a larger house now so the layout can become a permanant feature... :)

Hi Will! nice review! regards the loco, it is actually a real one! built by engineer James Holden in 1903, it was known as the Holden 101 tank. surprisingly only one was built! and spent almost all of its life shunting around Swindon works. after 8 years, the loco was cut up in 1911.The other basic hornby 0-4-0, was also based on a one off tank engine, called 'King George V'. hope this helps!

I prefer these more realistic trains sets over Thomas train sets for kids over 8. And there is no need to buy much more than the several Hornby kits to go with the Track map, maybe another siding or two in the corners and possibly some trees and shrubs. One doesn't have to spend a small fortune building bigger and better to enjoy this hobby.

InterCity82 you forgot to change the point back to the main, something every brakeman or conductor knows to do before they leave. The points should always be set for the main line except when the train is using it. It is a good practice for every model railroader. Otherwise no one would ever trust a point being set for the main.

HO and OO most of the time share the same track, despite it being to small for OO gauge. HO common in the USA, so I put HO iin brackets as it is culturly equivalent, though not identical.

I agree abou the controller. It's horribly cheap and nasty and the power wires are the thinest wire you could pssoibly find. I frankly can't imagine it lasting more than 5 minutes with your average child.

Well, when I bought my son a train set for Christmas when he asked for one, I let it be known a train set was more than just a toy. I bought him railroad modeling magazines before Christmas, and if he wanted more trains and a proper layout he would have to treat the trains as a hobby, If the trains were broke by carelessness within a year there wouldn't be more. I built a proper table layout with his help for his trains, getting his trains OFF the floor, which I believe is VITAL for the hobby.

Not without open heart surgery installing a DCC decoder into the DC train. I was able to fit a Hornby 8 pin decoder into the 0-4-0, not a easy task because she isn't DCC ready. But I found space above the cogs behind the smoke stack weight and in front of the motor by taping the decoder to the bottom of the top side of the boiler. Yes, the 0-4-0 is now a true shunter and runs at very slow speeds.

SeaToby11 One must be patient, and fiddle for some time to squeeze the decoder in as there isn't a lot of space for it within Hornby's pocket rockets. I almost gave up, but did push the decoder forward a bit more and viola the loco snapped shut finally. But by the time you add the expense os a DCC controller along with the DCC decoder doing so isn't much of a cheaper option than buying a DCC train set to begin with.
