to me, people who show vulnerability are people i’m so admirable of, because of their bravery and how strong and resilient they are. i can’t commend u enough for sharing your vulnerability - not that u had to because it’s ur “baggage” and ur life, but this took strength and it’s something u should be incredibly proud of.

We’ve lost nine babies and cannot have children at all now. It’s hard coming out and telling people. People don’t know your life and struggles and you have to do what is right for you and baby. I’ve been in the situation of being judged but no one saw the choices I had to choose from. Respect to you both. Praying for you.

Different perspective; I am autistic. It does define me. I am disabled, not because there is something wrong with me, but because the world isn’t set up for me. My parents tried to pretend I wasn’t autistic and it caused me severe trauma. Please try to reach out to adults who have the same condition as your child to help guide you advocating for him. A lot of parents fall into this ableist trap of “not letting it define their kids” to the point they ignore very real needs. I can tell your heart is in the right place, but some of these the “positive” things said can be really toxic. Disabled isn’t a bad word. People need to stop pretending like it is.

I understand where you are coming from but in the video she clearly says she reached out to parents whose child have the condition. She also clearly says in the video that she is reaching out to people who have the ability to help her son when the time comes. She also never said disabled was a bad word and obviously wants whatever is best for her child. I usually never comment on videos but I think this comment is just bringing negativity to the video. I'm sending all the love to you Sarah and think it was really brave of you and Kurt to share your experience. I have loved watching you individually for years and am so excited to see your family grow!!

@AFL Rookie The comment wasn’t unkind they were just giving an honest perspective on what their life has been like based on how their parents raised them. And from what Sarah said it sounded like the doctor wasn’t very tactile with their choice of words but not unkind just giving a realistic opinion from their professional point of view. I think it’s important to not sugar coat this as they have no way of knowing what end of the spectrum their child will be on. That’s why these tests are carried out early so the option is available.

As a person with a severe rare genetic disorder: Yes, there are times when my disease is horrible and has made my life miserable. And any chronically ill or disabled person who doesn't acknowledge that life can be hard sometimes is in denial. HOWEVER, you will very rarely meet a disabled person who wishes they had never been born in the first place. We are *just* people. You're son will have good periods and bad periods, that's part of being alive for everyone. As for not wanting to use him to become a spokesperson, I get you. And that is totally the right decision. My daughter inherited my disease and I know people would eat up content about her more so than about me, but she is a child. Her privacy comes first.

As an adult with a genetic condition, there is good and wonder in everything. Yes I live my life a little differently but you learn to appreciate the small things and celebrate the little wins. I love life. I love being given the chance to prove people wrong. It drives me and fuels my ambition. Disability can be a beautiful thing. It’s often misconstrued as frightening or negative. It’s completely the opposite. There’s beauty to be found in everything and your little boy will thrive and flourish with your outlook and support. He’s exceptionally lucky to have parents who want to educate themselves on every aspect. Being his advocate is the best thing you can do for him. Fight his corner and get ready for him to consistently amaze you.

When my mum was pregnant the doctors told her that there was a 70% chance I would be born with a genetic disorder. She was really young, and they suggested she terminate the pregnancy, she believed that I would be okay, and decided to have me anyway. I was born a perfectly healthy baby, with no disorders. Regardless of they’re possible condition, you are such a beautiful loving human, your baby will be blessed in life because of the people that around them with love.

As someone with a disability myself ( cerebral palsy) I’m going to be honest: it can be hard at times. The world will have its assumptions of what they think your condition is and put you in a box. I’ve had some pretty rough days when I’ve wished my CP away, but they’re few and far between. That being said the one thing I illiterate to people when they ask how they can help with my disability is ‘ Let me tell you what I need , if I can. ‘ That’s the one take away I’d leave you both with... don’t hide the condition from your child if they’re aware they are different, but if they are able to make choices for themselves and express what they need then let them lead the way ( much easier when they’re older). One thing you crave as a person with a disability is independence and autonomy over ones own body, rather than ‘being normal’ or ‘being like everyone else.’

I once heard a couple speaking on their baby’s health conditions and they said, “instead of questioning ‘why us?’ We question ourselves, ‘why not us?’” If you have the means, the love, the hope, the will, the fight, to get the privilege to take care and raise a little one with these circumstances, why not? You will love and cherish every moment, every step of the way! I said a prayer for your baby boy and for you both, as well as your families 💙💙 cheers to an amazing future!!

You both are very strong! For those who don't know: NIPT searches trisomy 21,18,13,22 (non vital), and X, Y related disorders. All these are very serious conditions where the person will be affected in a big way. It will require lifelong treatments and care. It's expensive and extenhuating. In most cases the family life revolves around the disability. It means not only physical malformations, sterility of the child, dependance on meds, but also cognitive impairment. So there is absolutely no shame at all in wanting to terminate in these cases. I just wanted this to be clear in case someone watching the video felt shame in not wanting that future.

I didn’t find out that I had a health condition that I’ve had since I was born until I was 14, and honestly if I had known about it earlier it would of defined me. I am grateful that I only just found out about it recently so that I could enjoy childhood and be ‘normal’. Not disclosing your sons health condition to the world will benefit him and I 100% agree with your thoughts! You’re doing the right thing!!!

As a trainee doctor, I just want to apologise for the way that doctor spoke to you. There is no reason why he should have pushed his views on to you, and the fact that he made you feel pressured to feel one way or another is unacceptable. I come across doctors like this every so often and it’s so sad to me that they think that they are behaving in an acceptable way. In no circumstance should you be pressured into anything (a doctor should NEVER phrase his opinion as a medical fact) unless your life is in danger, and I am so sorry that this happened to you. I wish you happiness in whatever you decide.

We have been married 8years, have two beautiful children, he loves the Lord with all his heart, excels at his career & has more joy than almost anyone you could meet. He would tell you that ‘disability’ does not define you, it doesn’t tell you want you can & can’t do( you just might do it differently), it doesn’t determine how happy your life will be & it certainly doesn’t determine your value. Sure, there were challenges, life threatening & frustrating ones. He didn’t walk until he was 4 but he learned to talk at 6 months. His parents wouldn’t change him for the world.

as a nurse ive noticed that for myself and other healthcare professionals we can come across as a bit cold and withdrawn but to be honest for alot of us its a way to keep our own mental health in tact. Its never a personal thing, as a doctor who has to deliver that type of news on a weekly/daily basis, he may have to remain a bit withdrawn from the emotions of the situation in order to keep his mental health in order. But in saying that, some doctors just dont have great people skills unfortunately and im so sorry he wasnt more sensitive with you

But 19 years later and my brother has graduated high school, studying tafe and opening his own dog therapy business. He loves sports and loves just being a young adult. True story, my brother had a down syndrome baby and it was the biggest blessing of their life. They had multiple health practitioners advise abortion after the tests revealed the 'condition' of their baby. They already had 3 healthy children b4 this child. They couldn't terminate and had their precious child. This baby has been the most amazing gift from God. They say this child, Isabella is secretly their favorite child and brings so much to the family, she has taught the whole family so much about LOVE.

“When pregnant, the cells of the baby migrate into the mothers bloodstream and then circle back into the baby, it’s called “fetal-maternal microchimerism”. For 41 weeks, the cells circulate and merge backwards and forwards, and after the baby is born, many of these cells stay in the mother’s body, leaving a permanent imprint in the mothers tissues, bones, brain, and skin, and often stay there for decades. Every single child a mother has afterwards will leave a similar imprint on her body, too. Even if a pregnancy doesn't go to full term or if you have an abortion, these cells still migrate into your bloodstream. Research has shown that if a mother's heart is injured, fetal cells will rush to the site of the injury and change into different types of cells that specialize in mending the heart. The baby helps repair the mother, while the mother builds the baby. How cool is that? This is often why certain illnesses vanish while pregnant. It’s incredible how mothers bodies protect the baby at all costs, and the baby protects & rebuilds the mother back - so that the baby can develop safely and survive. Think about crazy cravings for a moment. What was the mother deficient in that the baby made them crave? Studies have also shown cells from a fetus in a mothers brain 18 years after she gave birth. How amazing is that?” If you’re a mom you know how you can intuitively feel your child even when they are not there….Well, now there is scientific proof that moms carry them for years and years even after they have given birth to them. I find this to be so very beautiful.🌸🌷⚘ Blessings for you and your family!*♡

It is so wonderful to hear Kurt’s support in this situation. Having gone through something similar, words cannot express the emotional impact it has on the mother who hears this news. As a self titled researcher, I had thought the worst would occur in my own situation. It is the way you both raise him and instill those values in your sons that will determine his acceptance and self love. I’m also a special education teacher and advocacy is key! Wishing you find peace, continued optimism, and much love and support.

You can tell he’s special needs just by talking to him but he’s highly HIGHLY functioning. He outlived his parents and is on his own for the first time as of earlier this year. They also suggested his parents terminate the baby 60 years ago. And look what became of him. 🥰🤗

My husband and I had to have gene tests and the dr wanted me to have an amniocentesis, I refused as it could have caused miscarriage. The next scan the echogenic bowel was gone!!! I was very ill my whole pregnancy and she had breathing issues for the first year but she is a healthy girl. She had small airways disease and got pneumonia a few times in childhood but that is as bad as anything got. I thank God everyday for my blessing. I trust God. I am praying for you Sarah.

Can we just take a moment to appreciate how amazing Kurt is, standing behind Sarah 100% on the issue with termination. I think for a father it's easier to go down the logical path (i.e. doctor's recommendation) since he doesn't have that womb connection with baby a mother does. We got told at our 20 week scan that our son had bilateral talipes (feet are twisted) which could be linked to various syndromes. I was offered extra tests to see if he had these syndromes, I turned them down and decided to go on with the pregnancy. He was born in March and was the perfect little bundle, nothing wrong apart from his feet. He started treatment on his feet at 7days old and now at 7 months his feet are perfectly positioned. The NHS have been fantastic throughout the pandemic. I also attended every scan on my own so I sympathise how scary that is in the pandemic. For health conditions to be found in pregnancy gives them a head start with the correct health professionals being in place when he’s born. We were having meetings with orthopaedic surgeons when he was still tucked up warm inside my tummy!! Good luck for the rest of your pregnancy and beyond, sending you both lots of love. ❤️💙 Xxx

Bedside manner is really nonexistent these days. We were thrown around from specialist to specialist, ultrasound to ultrasound, blamed for not taking the genetic testing, used to practicing 3D heart ultrasounds, and talked down to about the basics of what veins are by the same people who couldn't figure out if our baby would have a genetic condition, a heart condition, an undeveloped brain, or be completely fine. We are so fortunate to have been able to find a professional who WAS compassionate, caring, and provided answers in a sensitive manner. Our girl had nothing more than a murmur, and all the back and forth would've been avoided if our original doctor knew more about updated guidelines for detecting Down's or the uniqueness of ultrasounds in Asian (or mixed) babies. But something her cardiologist said really resonated with me as I listened to your story. He said to never tell others (non medical people) about her heart. Her murmur is one that has zero affect on her life, but, he said the way people treat her would change IMMEDIATELY. They'd think she's weaker, not as capable..etc. Your choice resonates with me-don't let any condition define your son. If and when you need the support of that niche community, you may share. But you're also giving him a chance to define who he is regardless of the condition. Strength and love to you both ❤
