My wife and I moved from central CA to eastern TN 4 years ago. My rule of thumb when going through stuff was that if we hadn't used it for 4 years, we really didn't need it and either sold it in a garage sale or donated it. And even after all that, we STILL moved crap across the country that we haven't used since. LOL. My new motto is get rid of it, and if it turns out that you did need it after all, we'll go get new, updated one. The only exception to that is my tools. One NEVER gets rid of useable tools. They simply are too expensive to buy new ones. LOL. Good luck!

LoL About 18 months ago we left NJ and put "only the essentials" in storage in SE Tenn near where we have some property. We thought we would build and winter at our small condo in FL to be near family. 😂 We now know we can't afford to build but we love it there very very much. We began our much anticipated RV travels and within 3 months had to return to FL due to my husband having a stroke while we were in Montana! Thankfully I can drive the RV!!! We absolutely need to get rid of the storage unit in TN! My husband refuses to get rid of his tools and he has many many tools. He even has tools that belonged to his grandfather over 80 years ago! We know we are wasting money on Storage. It is incredibly difficult to let things go that have family memories attached to them. Thank you for the inspiration!

Thank you for keeping your journals. I am a diarist. I collect antique diaries/letters then transcribe them and finally I do talks for historical societies on the people who wrote the diaries. I prefer choosing women/girl written diaries. My oldest ones are from the 1870's. I'm sure some diarist in the far future will find your journals interesting. My favorite group of diaries is from the same woman, from the age of 11 to 83. It was fascinating to see her develop into a woman and then into a grandmother. And to think of all the changes in her world that she was able to witness. (electricity, cars, planes, telephones/telegraph, moving pictures, 5 wars, etc.). Your journals, while they may be embarrassing or uncomfortable to share with your current friends/family, they become a wonderful first-person document that helps historians like me, build a clear picture of life in this era.

We too remember how emotional it can be - so many of our "things" we decided to give to friends and family instead of selling (though they would have sold) because the value to us was worth too much to sell for what they would be worth to someone else. Gifting them to loved ones let us transfer that emotional value more easily... BTW - Love how respectful and grateful you are to each other - it is a joy to watch your channel.

My mom passed away in 2011. My sister and I live in WA and came for 6 weeks to TN to get the house ready to sell. Our mom lived 90 years and hardly ever threw anything away. This included 30 years of a daycare in our home! It was a labor of love, but labor we did - in August and September, no less! That was hard. We spent 12 hours of physical work, and then wound down by looking at old photos, cards and letters. I learned that I didn't want to repeat that mistake. Right now, however, is a different reality. Our kids are 19, 21, 23, and 25. They aren't married and trying to get their lives going. That means downsizing is on hold. This comment seems all serious, but it's just a part of life, and I am excited for your new chapter as well as ours, whenever that comes! Happy Holidays!

So...I didn't put this in the episode because I didn't want to go to far down the rabbit hole, but a formative memory in my life is when my grandfather passed when I was 13/14. My mom and I, along with my grandmother, spent the entire summer going through a 3 story house sorting stuff. My mom probably has a different perspective on it as it was her father, and she got to spend time with her mother, but for me...it was when I realized I didn't want to collect a lot of things. I felt your story deeply. I know that work. I know the moments of joy from the memories. But the work is hard. And yet... even then... somehow we still managed to have a 12x12 storage unit 😂. -J

It is hard to go through stuff. I have always had trouble with that because I am sentimental. What I have done is put two boxes of sentimental stuff in the basement labeled family stuff and I will send to my niece. What hit me is looking at all the videos of the southeast. I saw the piles of what used to be homes and people’s belongings. They are now piles of trash. That really did make me think. It is all just stuff. And my treasures aren’t any of those. I am getting to the point where I am going to sell my crocheting and knitting stuff. I am unable to do it anymore because of arthritis. I kept it for four years just hoping. But I’m now doing paper crafts and that is all I need. So I have been thinking about selling in Facebook marketplace. That is in my to do list. So now I’m trying to think of all the things where your height matters. I am certain I will never figure it out. Looking forward to Tuesday. Well I always am. Safe travels. Want a chuckle? I haven’t had a PB&J in years. So I decided to try it again. Not bad.
@OpenRoading16 күн бұрын
Of all the influence we could have had...I think having someone try a PB&J for the first time in a long time is the pinnacle. 😁 It's so hard with stuff. It's easy to fall into the trap of believing the stuff we have holds the same value to someone else as it does to us. Now granted, some of it MAY hold that value to those around us, that's where we talk and find out. I applaud you for pivoting your hobby from knitting to paper crafts over the past few years when your joints told you to stop. Genuinely the type of person I want to be, can't do this? Ok - what can I do instead. 🏆 See you Tuesday! Just filmed that video today! -J

Wow! Courage! When I married Doug (at 63 and living in my own home and moving into his) I got a storage unit which we kept for a year. We moved most of it into the basement. Arghh. It’s taken 5 years to gradually part with most of it. So hard. So many antiques. People are not interested in antiques these days and neither are my kids. They’d rather go to IKEA. We re still working on the basement and would love to be able to finish the rest of it. Last year we were able to put in another bedroom and bath. Keep in mind our finished main floor is only 800 square feet. So combining two households into this tiny home has been big challenge. Most sentimental things for me was the photographs and my kids artwork from preschool and kindergarten. The hardest to part with? My antique armoires.

while watching yours and other RV Vlogs, I often wonder how you all would re-adjust to life after full time RV life should you decide for whatever reason to go back to brick and mortar life; especially financially. With inflation, especially land and home ownership. do you have the means to buy a home and furnish it? Definitely not my business, but would love to see one of you do a show on this topic.

It's a valid question. Here's my perspective based on my experience. Value in land/home ownership isn't a sure thing and while it is a tangible investment it's not guaranteed value. Our first home flooded, the neighborhood went downhill and we ended up having to sell the home for pennies on the dollar of what we paid for it even after putting over $20K in upgrades into it. Our second home sold for 10's of thousands more than we paid for it. So, yeah... good and bad. Same type of investment. And had we held on to that first property it still would not have gotten back up to the value we paid for it to this day nearly 16 years later. The market can go up and down and if your timing isn't right as to when you buy or sell, or what your loan looks like, a homebuyer can be up a creek just as quickly as an RVer. I'm not a financial expert but to me it doesn't appear that inflation is what's holding housing prices high right now... it's a bubble based on supply and demand and when it bursts a lot of people are going to be up a creek just like many were in 2008. They'll be stuck in homes with inflated mortgages that they can't sell because the value of the home has dropped far below what they owe. (2008 all over again) So as an RVer, I feel like I may have a better opportunity to buy a home or land should the market ever bottom out again because I don't first have to sell my existing home. But who knows... that may never happen! While our future plans do include owning property and probably a home, our life isn't dependent on those things. We do earn income on the road, live on a budget, and are working our butts off saving for our financial future (Just don't want to give the impression that we are "trust fund kids" blowing through savings...😂) -J

I have had to do this twice . I am doing it for the last time. I live with my son and we decided to do this so no one would have to do this when I'm gone. We are almost there, down to only what we use. We have no sentimental stuff . I said this is a lifetime of stuff but my memories are my forever
@OpenRoading14 күн бұрын
That's pretty much what we did - the 6 boxes are sentimental type things but if something were to happen to us they are easily gone through and disposed of. And 90% of what's in the RV is used quite regularly or actually holds some resale value. -J

Once upon a time I did tabletopia. My struggle with online games is that the primary joy I get out of gaming is the group of friends sitting around the table. I've never been able to capture that online, even with headsets. Did some games of Scythe remote are first couple of years on the road but the camaraderie just wasn't the same. But that's my experience. I know a lot of people who love the online space and even have core game groups of friends online! -J

Moved from MN to NM. We got rid of everything that wasn’t irreplaceable and bought new when we got down here. Haven’t regretted it at all. Saved us more on moving costs than it cost to replace stuff, and we got to upgrade beds, chairs, and sofas. I can’t imagine having to clean out a storage unit. Cleaning out a house with room to move was bad enough, although an elevator would have been useful. The stairs were awful.
@OpenRoading16 күн бұрын
Ok... so silly question... How hard is the muscle memory for you when you write out your address? I can only imagine going from MN to NM has got to be tough because an N is 2/3rds of an M so my hand would be finishing that puppy off as an M every single time if I had lived in MN prior! 😂 Sorry - that's just imediatly where my brain went! lol ANYWAY! Such a good plan. If you can do something like that I imagine it reduces so much stress on the move! Stuff always gets scratched and broken on top of everything else. -J

My mom moved into a retirement community, so I had to rent a storage space for all of her stuff. Costs me a couple grand a year for it. I'd love to get rid of it, but there's just no way. My bunny ate a few cords. The worst was when the router blew after he bit the wire. I miss the little guy.

Yeah, when it's not you're own stuff that's a good reason to wait. Twix loved the "white hay" as we called it. We couldn't keep a phone charger to save our life. 😂 She was the best rabbit ever though (Don't tell ) She always needed to be in the same room as Kalyn, if she was asleep in the living room and Kalyn moved to the office, when she woke up you'd literally hear her go from room to room until she found Kalyn then she'd stretch out and go to sleep again. -J

Storage lockers are such a mistake for many people. Make sense when you are not sure about RVing for a year or two, but then close it down. Another way to look at it is to ask “how much of that stuff could I buy for that amount of storage expense”.

I've had these discussion with my wife several times.. A permanent storage location is necessary with RV life. We all have a finite number of years that RV life is viable. A final home is something to keep in mind, so those "things you like" might be worth holding on to.
@OpenRoading17 күн бұрын
Eh... I think it depends. Sure stuff is valuable but we spent $8,000 to keep stuff that could all be replaced for under $8,000. You just have to do the math and figure out the value of what you are storing (and will it hold that value) vs the time you think you will be storing it. In our case... we lost a good bit of money. Had we never had the unit from day 1 and put that money aside we'd have $8,000 toward stuff for a future house PLUS the over $1,000 we would have gotten for selling it back then. 😁 All that to say - I don't think it's a necessity - but it certainly IS up to you what you do with your stuff! -J

Wow! Great job decluttering to get rid of that storage locker. I put my classic car in one for 6 months while we remodeled our house. Two years later I was finally able to bring her home. My sister is married to a guy who grew up in Binghamton. They got married in Seattle and moved to Binghamton. After 30 years they just moved back to Seattle. Your Goodwill seems a lot more relaxed than ours. Here, people like to use it instead of the dump to get rid of stuff they don't want anymore. There are attendents that have to unload your car and check what you are bring. They refuse a lot of stuff. The way Trinity took off after that squirrel happened to my wife when we were watching our daughters pup. My wife promised our daughter we wouldn't lose her pup Annie. Annie pulled my wife right off her feet and my wife landed on her face in the gravel. It was awful, but she held on to that lease. Looking forward to your next adventure!
