Silent Hill has always had a strong feeling of melancholy that sets it apart from many other horror franchises. That and the generally more realistic and flawed protagonists make them all the scarier because you can empathise.
@Densoro2 жыл бұрын
I actually adore this pivot in the franchise, because it sounds exactly like the kind of song the 17 year old protagonist, Heather, might have on her Walkman -- but in context, 'You're Not Here (because we broke up, presumably)' becomes 'You're Not Here (while I'm hiding in a broom closet from flesh-eating monsters, trying not to sob out loud in terror and wishing I had one last moment of human contact before I have to go out and face those thing again)' and it's such a smooth way to illustrate the emotional undercurrent of the situation without being too on-the-nose. And then as the song winds toward the end, we creep into the sort of vaguely occult one-woman-wailing that comprises the series' leitmotif. It creates this feeling like, 'You thought you were at the start of a new life somewhere else, singing about _normal problems_ like lost love, but in your bleakest moments you've found yourself back here -- in Silent Hill.' It's like how giant robot anime with theme songs like, 'I wonder if we can learn to trust each other. Are people doomed to war, or can love bloom on a battlefield? I'll put my trust in you and see if we can make a brighter future together,' resonate so much more than, 'OPTIMUS PRIME! HE'S A REALLY COOL GUY! DONT MESS WITH HIM HE'LL KICK YOUR HEAD OFF! BUY OUR TOYS!' 'I'm mourning what we had, and missing you' is so open-ended and _human._

Theme of Laura from Silent Hill 2 is an interesting instrumental rock track, that I think is the quintessential Silent Hill game intro song, in a similar vein to You're Not Here but a little more pure "Silent Hill" with the layers and melancholy and musical callback to SIlent Hill 1's intro theme. Akira Yamaoka really went a different and very unique way with the Silent Hill music, either it is some driving rock tune, some creepy ambience or some straight up horrifying industrial.

SH is not your typical jump-scare fest game, it defined the genre of psychological horror and devs copy the tropes from SH to this day, so around 23 years. In terms of music it did not age one day, Akira the composer and Mary - the singer always do an amazing job even though their style is very recognizable. You would immediately know the song is from SH, they have a specific feel to them. I would highly recommend SH2 OST to listen to in your free time. You can't go wrong with this one as it tells an amazing and melancholic story in itself. In regards to SH3, yeah the protagonist is a teenager so rock-punk fits perfectly.

The composer Akira Yamaoka originally asked Shirley Manson of Garbage to sing the songs for SH3, she had to decline because of scheduling conflicts but voice actress Mary Elizabeth McGlynn eventually got the gig. It was so well received that she would go on to do vocals for all the games going forward.

If you liked this, there's quite a few vocal songs Akira Yamaoka has made. He usually makes industrial, ambient and anti-music, but also occasional contemporary industrial rock/metal: Rain of Brass Petals (Three Voices Edit) - Silent Hill 3 I Want Love (Studio Mix) - Silent Hill 3 Room of Angel - Silent Hill 4 Cradle of Forest - Silent Hill 4 Tender Sugar - Silent Hill 4 Your Rain - Silent Hill 4 Waiting for You - Silent Hill 4 O.R.T - Silent Hill Origins Hole in the Sky - Silent Hill Origins Shot Down in Flames - Silent Hill Origins One More Soul to the Call . Silent Hill Homecoming Alex Theme - Silent Hill Homecoming Elle Theme - Silent Hill Homecoming This Sacrled Line - Silent Hill Homecoming When You're Gone - Silent Hill Shattered Memories Always On My Mind - Silent Hill Shattered Memories Acceptance - Silent Hill Shattered Memories Hell Frozen Rain - Silent Hill Shattered Memories Love Psalm - Silent Hill Book of Memories Different Perspective - Shadows of the Damned Take Me To Hell (Broken Dream) - Shadows of the Damned

"Waiting for you" isn't actually from Silent Hill 4. It's just from SH4's sountrack album. The song's subtitle (Live at Heaven's Night) and it using themes from Theme of Laura implies it's actually about Maria from Silent Hill 2. My completly unfounded theory is that it may have originally been intended for the Director's Cut version of Silent Hill 2 with the bonus scenario where you play as Maria.

Imagine hearing this song while watching several scenes from (maybe) different cutscenes from the game without any context because that's the intro of Silent Hill 3. It is surreal to say the least, which fits the game perfectly. By the way the singer is Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, she worked in several Silent Hill games and more recently in The Medium, it would be great if you plan to cover more of her songs. Silent Hill music can be melancholic, heartwarming, eerie or just downright terrifying and distressing, and it is a big part of what Silent Hill is. The story in the early games is really really good, so if you could give them a try sometime you won't be disappointed, it is a fantastic experience.

There’s some speed in this one but it’s ramped up to and smoothed away in a way that I’m just now noticing is a lot like the stress factors of the story in SH3 involving the main characters as well as gameplay wise involving the other world. Huh, why didn’t it occur to me before 🤔

Theme of Laura from Silent Hill 2 is probably one of my favorite songs among all the games I've played, which for me is difficult to say since I loved The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, FF7 and FF7:R, Demon's/Dark Souls soundtracks so much. If you're interested in something more Opera-y then check out Demon's Souls' Return to Slumber or Dark Souls 1's Nameless Song or Gwyn, Lord of Cinder(no vocals in this one though). If you listen to Gwyn, Lord of Cinder then a little context going in if you're not familiar with the game will be below the ellipses in the event you wanna try and figure out what the story of the song is before finding out the story of the character. ... Gwyn was originally known as the Lord of Sunlight, the greatest of all the Gods, but the flame that gave birth to his world was starting to go out, and as such sacrificed himself to it to keep it ablaze for as long as possible, as he knew of the age that would come after the flame had finally faded, and it terrified him to no end. Even with his sacrifice however, the flame did eventually fade, and there at the end of all things he sits, a charred and burnt husk of his former self devoid of all sense and reason, waiting for the day when a champion with an even greater Soul than his own to come along and take up the mantle of the Lord of Cinder.

Akira Yamaoka is a really resourceful composer. I would recommend almost all SH songs that are sing, especially the ones from SH Origins, but not only from that game of the franchise. For your interest, Yamaoka has composed A LOT for Konami games and his songs go WAY ahead rock or the kind of music he did for SH. If you want something iconic to the same game (Silent Hill 3) that gets under your skin more, give the title menu song a go, Float Up from a Dream. It's very minimalistic, and both calming and unsettling. The save screen music is a personal favourite too and a similar vibe. Or go with something like Violent Temper if you want to hear what the monsters sound like, heheh. :P and that's all from just this entry; these soundtracks are so varied and also so good. Do bear in mind that the ones that are less like full songs (such as the ones I mentioned here) are often quite short and designed for background repeating, and so if you did feel so-inclined, might do better in a combination reaction or something like that (might not have too much to say about each individual one otherwise). Oh and I HAVE to mention the post-ending ranking screen music, which is so damn beautiful and something you'd usually miss most of due to where it plays in the game. Has a build-up to a beat kicking in and everything. Just for a stats screen!

Oh, okay? We doing some Akira Yamaoka in this peace? Heck. Yes. Silent Hill 2 is arguably, and in my opinion, the most emotional story in a video game. I've played plenty of AAA games with millions of dollars in the budget, and very few have captured what Silent Hill brings in their 2nd and 3rd entries. (Edit) Yamaoka's "upbeat" music best reminds of when you're the last person in a store or a bar and the place is shutting down, but they let you mill about cause you're not bothering anything. You're just taking in the last moments of a place that was bustling now that the life has been sucked out and you just get somber and start thinking, all for it to start again tomorrow. "Theme of Laura" or "Promise" by Yamaoka are great examples.
