If you want his full backstory, he recently did 8 Chapter videos on his renmakesstuff page - this goes into the time when he kept getting misdiagnosed for 8 years until he finally got his Lyme disease diagnosis. His song Troubles is a summary of it, but when you have time going through those chapters will give you the full picture.

Great recommendations! I love that new reactors have the opportunity to really get to know REN’s whole story in the beginning of their journey if they choose to watch the chapters and Trouble. When most people discovered him, like myself, about 14-18 months ago, some of the info was confusing and slow to come out at the time.

Thank you so much for this video. I just discovered Ren and I Ren about a week ago and I’ve listened to hundreds of reactions to it so far (no end in sight). I’ve gotten insights from most of them but yours stands out because of its format (listen to it first and only then do stop start with commentary) but much more so because of your authenticity which shines through in both your facial reactions in the first half, and your totally on point analysis in the second. Your “grief button” and “writer elephant” metaphors gave me so much insight into these issues which I’m struggling with. Your analysis brightened Ren’s already shining performance. I’ve subscribed and I wish you success on your continuing journey.

Normally when I comment on a Ren reaction I say something about how great Ren is as an artist and he is. Today I simply want to say that I appreciate the absolute confirmation bias I found in everything that you said. I also want to take this time to wish you and everyone continued growth and awaking in your and their life experience. Great reaction subbed for many more.

Thank you! I couldn’t tell you the number of reactions I have watched of this song, and I am so happy you finally watched it. I knew your reaction would be thoughtful and interesting. Ren has so many more great songs and I hope you will find your way to more of them. Along this track, try RenXChinchilla’s “How to Be Me” and “Chalk Outlines”. For more straight singing, try some of his videos with his former band, The Big Push. And then there’s the rap and beatboxing. For that, try “The Hunger”. Ren was misdiagnosed for years, while Lyme’s disease did horrible things to his brains and his body. He spent over a year in treatment in Canada for that, and while he isn’t “cured”, he is in a better space (I think) both physically and mentally these days. ❤️🎶

This is fantastic. Aside from the song itself, a few of your comments really gave me a new way of looking at things and I wanted to say thank you for that. I’ve seen a few comments in here with people telling you how to react, saying it’s too long, etc. Please keep doing what you want to do and how you want to do it. Ignore the distasteful comments, that’s not what Ren’s community is about. This reaction/commentary was exceptional in my opinion, very well done.

Nice facial expressions. No need to speak. I knew exactly how you felt about each part, and I agree falsetto ending is pure joy. Ren wants to save the world. He is our voice full of hope. He obviously wrote this to help people. Im sure he never imagined how viral it would become. My own negativity and doubt held me back many many times, and it didnt have the Lyme disease buff. I can't imagine.

I just saw your Hi Ren reaction, and put this journal entry of Ren's as my comment to that reaction. jAN 01, 2023 rEN~ Up until I was 9 years old, I would intermittently hear a voice in my head that was not my own. The voice was distinctly different to mine, and always negative. It would self criticize or urge me to do things I knew to be morally wrong. The most peculiar thing about the voice was that it took no effort on my behalf to produce. My own thoughts always felt like there was a process that required effort to bring them to the forefront of my mind, this voice appeared as though it was spoken by another. The sentences felt predetermined like they had already been constructed. I remember very vividly at 9 years old, becoming very frustrated with the voice. I stood in my back yard, internally screaming at the voice to be silent again and again, and it did. In a flash there was silence, to the point where my head felt like an empty room. I wasn't used to the quiet and that voice never returned. It almost felt lonely in my head. When I got older I had intermittent bouts with auditory hallucinations where I would hear perfect symphonies, usually at night when drifting off to sleep. They were so clear that they sounded like they were emanating from a radio in the corner of my room. I knew they weren't there, but for some reason they never came with the feeling of fear. I also recall sitting on a bus at the age of 15, and hearing the sound of a crowded room, with about 100 voices chattering away, I was the only person apart from the driver on the bus. These experiences were always very brief, and few and far between. My last hallucination was during an intense bout of psychosis in 2015, and was my first visual hallucination. I was walking down a pavement after jumping out my mums car in a crossroads in a moment of frustration and distress with my condition. I was trying to run from myself. What appeared to be a homeless man with a dark complexion approached me, and asked me what was wrong. I explained that I had been sick most my life, and I wasn't sure I had the strength to continue. He looked at me, and smiled and told me 'everything is going to be okay in the end Ren.' I had not told him my name. There was something so overpoweringly sincere about this very simple message, which brought with it an overwhelming feeling of inner peace, and in a flash, he vanished. My rational brain always linked these experiences to what the doctors have told me, that there are parts of my brain compromised by the autoimmunity in my body. That the myelin sheaths surrounding the complex electrical system that conduct my thoughts were damaged and compromised, causing these lucid experiences that I knew did not exist inside the physical world. The part of me that edges away from logical and rational thought always attributed these thoughts to some kind of otherworldly intervention, that made my thoughts the battleground of some spiritual tug of war. For a long time I never really acknowledged this part of myself, for with it brought the danger and stigma of sounding like a crazy person. I decided with my latest release, to the best of my ability, to capture and express this chess match of thought. Hi Ren comes out in just over 24 hours. I can't wait for you all to hear it.

Ren is an amazing artist who epitomizes music. I'm pretty sure there are not many minutes during the day when he isn't thinking about music. When he picks up a guitar, he actually becomes music. You should watch his 1 Million Subscriber (Defining Success) video since you were talking about defining success, to see what Ren thinks success is. He also has a live premier tomorrow (Monday) of Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve) that will have a string quartet that you might enjoy. Nice reaction. It was long, but I did watch the whole thing and found you quite interesting. BTW, has anyone ever told you that you look like Tucker Carlson with a mustache? 😄

As a singer, you will be very jazzed 😆🥰when you react to his vocals…recent “Back on 74/Message in a Bottle” …busking on street of Brighton with his band The Big Push “I shot the Sheriff” and brilliantly bleeding into 2 other songs (pick the one on KZbin he’s wearing red suspenders…best one). “Jenny Screech n Violet”(make sure you do all 3 parts together!) and gosh, Money Game part 1, 2 and 3 😳 just wowww. Great reaction. I loved that you are very emotionally analytical. Your description of darkness being comforting made me realize that I feel the same way about aloneness (not loneliness). Even with my partner, who is a twin soul to me, I feel a sense of chaos. It's is only when I'm alone that I feel stable. Just knowing that the environment is entirely mine to act upon, while other changes will just not happen. It's comforting.

Great reaction and input! Depression is such a custom tailored emotion that varies vastly from individual to individual. Some grasp for light as you mentioned only to have it fade from their grasp when nothing is done. Sometimes the way out is to let go of that light and walk into depression's darkness to understand it better and learn how to defeat it. Depression is part of this human experience that many have encountered and art such as this song and discussions like the one you bring here helps many to realize that they are not alone with such feelings and that they can reach out to others for help

My favorite kind of reaction! To understand who Ren is as a human being: Defining Success : 1M Subscribers. To understand the journey that Ren has been on, and continues to go through: Chapters 1-8 on RenMakesStuff ( deeply personal and raw and in my opinion , better to be watched and not reacted to) and Troubles ( the culmination of the journey he’s been through and once again shows what kind of human Ren really is. I think that if you want a masterclass in storytelling you will really enjoy The Tales of Jenny and Screech ( FULL13+ minutes).

Nice reaction/analysis. I appreciate your openness. Ren has a way of making us FEEL, but also feel ok with feeling. Other moving songs are his duets... Crutch, Chalk Outlines (live), and especially How To Be Me (live). Just like Hi Ren, which was recorded live and in one take (for the song part, the spoken work part was a different take), his two duets with Chinchilla are live and in one take. For pure storytelling, his Tales of Jenny and Screech (13 mins) will blow your mind. Keep it coming.

You will need to watch Money Game Part 2 to understand the depth of his meaning “she sells sea shells, on the sea shore”, which he released a couple of years before this. Thanks for a great reaction video :) p.s A warning if you go down the Ren rabbit hole- one of the most requested will be the tale of 'Jenny and skreech + violets tale' It is a trilogy- its one video, but seperate sections exist too- and its best to do it all in one go, but maybe speak some after each section then more at the end? Well, however you break it down, the one thing is, DONT do them out of order - or some fans will flip out lol. Ive seen quite a few people accidently watch violets tale (pt3) before the other 2, and they follow on as one story. I assume as an opera singer you wont be too interested in all his hip hop stuff and people will more recommend you watch his 'bardcore' stuff like the tale, money game, etc - but he does also have a wonderful singing voice :)

You seem to be labouring under the impression that this is about depression. I get that that was your experience but it's not what the song's about. All personal, subjective meanings are valid, so you're not wrong in that sense, however it's not the meaning that Ren envisioned and which I think the song makes clear. Ren's stated that it's about the human condition generally. His chronic health conditions and subsequent health conditions are referenced because they've been central to his life experience but it's not about those things specifically. He references music and the creative process as much, if not more, as music has been the other dominant feature in his life but it's not specifically about that either. As Ren said and as the lyrics make clear, especially towards the end of the piece, it's about the human condition generally. It's a song about human experience, not a song about mental health. There's also the coda of accepting that darkness is part of existence, part of life, part of us and helps shape who we are, both positively and negative. It's not something that can be ultimately defeated and it's a frustrating waste of time and energy to do so. Not to mention being self defeating. It just IS. Once we accept this simple, if uncomfortable truth, life becomes a little easier and the dark becomes a tad easier to deal with and to mitigate. The other thing that's often missed, on a first listen, is how much humour there is, especially in the first half of the song. Ren's said that there's a lot of poking fun at himself and his attitudes, within the duality. :)

The video will remain as is. Most likely, future videos may not be as long. The format of the videos will also remain the same. My content isn't for everyone, so I appreciate you giving my channel a try =)

Dude…I’ve been listening to you for about a half hour now. I’m getting psychokiller vibes. Something I’ve never said before. You said you have hurt a lot people but never described how. Tell me it’s not so.

I've fortunately never been compromised to the point of killing someone. It's an interesting discussion topic, though, and I may discuss it in future videos. Similarly, I've met (in-person and through books) many people who've killed others and just do/ have done their best to continue living their lives righteously. Observing and giving people the space to grow beyond their past (should they genuinely want to) is like watching a flower bloom from the soil, a truly beautiful experience.

I prefer reaction over analysis. The work stands in its own. Just react emotionally, don’t explain as if your interpretation is the interpretation. Don’t give a lecture on it.

It's not The interpretation, it's An interpretation. If the piece doesn't focus too much on the music but rather the message, of course, I'm going to provide my thoughts. I understand this may have been long and I'll most likely shave down the time for future videos, but I will unapologetically talk about what the music means to me and my interpretation on my channel. I hope this clears up my stance and doesn't come across as too abrasive =)

. Thank you for your analysis. Your thoughts are definitely valuable, as a person who has experienced and can relate to depression and overcoming those negative feelings.

It always bothers me when people tell creators that they should or shouldn’t do things. There’s different channels for different things and if you don’t like the way a certain channel is, don’t watch. There’s a lot of other reactors who say very little that you can watch. For the rest of us. We stay and enjoy the content. ❤

Lol I grew up with the Beatles. Yea, I'll definitely shave down the video length for future videos. This was also me testing the waters on this kind of video format and honestly, while the content itself was true to me, the length was problematic. Thanks for your critique =)
