3 together....a child. Steven Stills wrote it about a woman, Judy Collins (who already had a son) that he was dating and having problems with. Suite Judy blue eyes by Steven Stills was about her as well

I was thinking something a bit different both could actually be right because there is a lot of word play in this song but the "They are three together" sounds as if the writer is counting the character attributes. They are 1) One "person" 2) Two (too) alone they are 3) Three "together" (i.e. being together as a quality) IMHO . . . But I was like 10 years old when the song came out.

Poets can give us fits trying to divine a meaning. It is also true that drugs were used and abused in abundance by the musician class particularly. The songwriter's perspective may forever escape us as it may even have escaped its author.

The three together means that the two individuals become a third entity as a couple. The lyrics are beautiful.

And in terms of homophones it is close to the word "FREE".
@whyme7996
@whyme7996 2 жыл бұрын
don't forget that the woman the song is about, Judy Collins, had a son from a previous marriage. The 3 together is the family unit unit that Stills wanted. The 2 individuals become ONE "person". when they are seperate they are 2 alone. When the are together as a family because the boy is part of the relationship, they are 3. and then of course they are "for" each other. The rhyme (not homophone) of free never really made sense though I had heard many times through the years. BTW. it didn't work out and she left him. But, Stills wrote 2 good songs about it. Suite Judy Blue Eyes is the other.

Home Free's arrangement is masterful, but keep in mind it's built on a solid gold foundation. Composerr Steven Stills was the first person to be inducted to the Hall of Fame *twice* in the same ceremony. And he''s on Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitarists. He is indeed a genius. I enjoyed your analysis very much, thanks!

Your reaction and "teaching" was excellent. Did you notice Tim holding his note at around 12:02, as the rest started building the harmony on it? Their cover of Brothers In Arms has some of the best, most complex harmonies I have ever heard. Would love to see your reaction to it. But if you can't, at least give it a listen. You will be amazed.

As always a wonderful "dissection" to point out what an untrained ear hears sounds amazing and unusual but does not understand why it is so. I would really love to hear your expertise on HF's absolutely unique arrangement of "Do you hear what I hear". The arrangement is by Adam Rupp and is probably the most unusual and even for an "untrained" ear extremely complex and difficult. I think you will have a field day with that one for sure.

OK Time for you to analyze May Day. Full disclosure: These guys are friends of mine and I have known Chance since 2010 when he sang BASS with Street Corner Symphony. Also, my wife is a private voice teacher focused on classical, musical theater, and a cappella. As very close friends with Chance I am excited to hear you recognize him and his vocal skills. As usual m'Lady you gave us exceptional teaching moments today. Chance, by the way, is the genius behind this song & video. He brought to the guys, and he outined it, and directed it (the lighting & choice of B&W is inspired). Chance is a very talented artist, and very soft-spoken & unassuming, I really am glad you featured him....he deserves recognition. I'm selfish & love to hear you take apart their cover of One-Man Band...it has some interesting vocal harmonies in several different places !!! It's such a pretty song I believe you'll enjoy it too.

Awesome analysis! I’m one of those people you were talking about who liked it without really knowing what made it so good. I actually didn’t watch it for quite a while because while I knew Crosby, Stills, and Nash and liked their songs that I had heard, I hadn’t heard this one. But so many people were telling other reactors they should check it out, that I looked up their original and it was sort of blah to me. When I heard their cover, I couldn’t get enough of it. In fact, the first time I heard it, I wasn’t watching the video, and didn’t even realize when Rob had joined Chance because their voices were so in unison.

Thank you for helping me to understand what I was hearing. I appreciate your analysis. I wish you would analyze the Home Free cover of “Brothers In Arms” next. I’ve been a Home Fry for almost 10 years (3 months shy). Love these guys and those never seem to stop surprising us somehow.I’ve never been as big a fan for any other group (close with the Eagles). This is one of my top favorite covers and all time releases of theirs. This was Chance’s idea and he directed the video, as well! Seems like I have been waiting a long time for this analysis; it was worth the wait. I am constantly amazed on how you can hear things I never even think of listening for, like when a singer takes a breath. There are so many other Home Free songs that I would love to hear you dissect, but I will limit my suggestions to "In the Blood" and "Brothers in Arms." There acapella take on a pipe organ is reason enough to give the second one a listen. On a lighter note, you could tackle "Country Fried Pop Medley." It's an "oldie", so it has Adam Rupp's brother Chris and no Chance.

I always learn so much from listening to you dissect the music. I hear the music, but you break it down to make me realize how MUCH Home Free ;puts in to their music. I LOVE this song, and thank you for your reaction,

I love your the way you explain what they're doing. You put it in terms that any novice, like myself can understand. And please don't take this the wrong way; I'm happily married and old enough to be your father, but, I want to say how beautiful you are. your eyes especially.

I love learning how things are done, especially the stuff I have no ability to do. Your dissection and analysis helps me greatly appreciate music that much more. That is why I would love for you to dissect and analyze two songs Home Free did with The Oak Ridge Boys, which would be "Elvira" (when Chris Rupp was still with HF) and "Beautiful Star of Bethlehem" (with Chance in the group). The Oaks are HF's musical predecessors and have 40+ years of touring and recording under their belts. In "Elvira" the two tenors and bass of each group kind of pair off with ultra tight harmonies in the chorus. "Beautiful Star of Bethlehem" has even more intricate harmonies. But, Austin is the only solo. It was released as a Christmas song, but it is in the hymnals and I've heard sung in different seasons during services. Lots of interesting things to look at in both songs, not the least of which is the effect aging may have on a voice and how long experience may or may not have in overcoming it.

Well, it's 5 days later, & I listened to your MASTER CLASS again. My previous comment, somewhere below, sounds like "damning with faint praise" when viewed through the lens of this repeat. Your analysis is absolutely stellar, which is still inadequate praise. [I believe that the language of superlatives has been eviscerated by the advertising industry, a loss that sadly cannot be corrected.]

The way they switch roles is so astounding sometimes. I love nerding out with you on some of Home Free's amazing arrangements. For me...it's where Mr. Rupp comes in. That very high bell falsetto....that's him. One thing about this song that amazes me is I believe (And no, I have not tested the theory with sheet music and a piano) this song illustrates the Arpeggio scales amazingly well. When Adam sings too..they complete the Arpeggio every time going a half step up or down wheree they create the resonance or dissonance. Adam Chance stayed at his Baritone upper range most of the song and Tim's Bass made Chance's voice ring like it was bouncing off of Tim's Bass. It's forever one of my favorite "Mr. Chance is in the building" songs. He doesn't do it that often. Home Free did a cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA" They just released "Ain't Goin Down til the Sun Comes Up" (Garth brooks Cover) There is some cool stuff from Chance in that one...and all of them. (It's hard to describe). There's some live performances that are more Chance heavy. He does lead with Tim in "Ring of Fire" when they perform it live. He also does lead for their "Children Go Where I Send Thee" Kenny Rogers cover when they do it live.

This is one of my favorites of theirs. It’s so good. Those harmonies are impeccable. If I have a complaint it’s that the song is too short! This was Chance’s baby. He directed it. Love the black and white. If you want to hear more of Chance try I Can’t Outrun You or Yours. Home Free is amazingly good. Good reaction SN.
