There was no western front by the time barbarossa started. Britain was the only holdout in which Germany didn't share a land border with. Hitler needed the oil in the caucasus and aimed to fulfill one of his objectives of creating lebensraum. Plus both Stalin and Hitler were very suspicious of each other and it was only a matter of time either would betray the other. Hitler took the initiative as he had the largest land army at the time and wanted to quickly destroy the USSR in it's weakened state as evident by the initial success of barbarossa.

@user-wj6dt5bq3w True, but it wasn't enough. Germany had IG Farben working on Coal to gasoline technology long before Barbarossa. But Hitler was an idiot. Between the speed injections and the brain rot, racial socialism he advocated its really clear now how stupid the man actually was. But ironically when the allies IQ tested the other german leaders for Nuremberg they all had very high IQs. So this tells me 2 things. First, Highly Intelligent people aren't always the smartest and most clever of humans. Secondly, they are the most prone to extremely ignorant ideas without common sense. I luckily made lots of friends, teaching many Germans along the way, that many... many Americans did not want the Bush wars, as they angrily accosted me about it... My newly won German friends told me the hilarious story of visiting Scotland as young men and women, shivering in their head to toe cold wear, watching the Scottish boys ride their bikes up and down the streets in short sleeves shirts. They told me this with much admiration for our brothers of the North. Hearts of humanity, - I love you all very much.

I never hear anybody talk about the inadequate tank for German to use the panzer ll Both the Panzer I and II were considered as stopgaps before the arrival of more advanced models, namely the Panzer III and IV. Despite of this, the Panzer II remained in service throughout the war, being the main light tank in German service and being used as a scout, although many wheeled vehicles preformed this specialized task far better. In this particular role, the Panzer II lacked both speed and range. It was gradually improved and produced until 1943, as no satisfactory replacement was ready in time.

In the two years leading up to the invasion, Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union signed political and economic pacts for strategic purposes. Following the Soviet occupation of Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina, the German High Command began planning an invasion of the Soviet Union in July 1940 (under the codename Operation Otto). Over the course of the operation, over 3.8 million personnel of the Axis powers-the largest invasion force in the history of warfare-invaded the western Soviet Union along a 2,900-kilometer (1,800 mi) front, with 600,000 motor vehicles and over 600,000 horses for non-combat operations. The offensive marked a massive escalation of World War II, both geographically and in the formation of the Allied coalition including the Soviet Union. The operation opened up the Eastern Front, in which more forces were committed than in any other theater of war in history. The area saw some of the world's largest battles, most horrific atrocities, and highest casualties (for Soviet and Axis forces alike), all of which influenced the course of World War II and the subsequent history of the 20th century. The German armies eventually captured some five million Soviet Red Army troops.[29] The Nazis deliberately starved to death or otherwise killed 3.3 million Soviet prisoners of war, and millions of civilians, as the "Hunger Plan" worked to solve German food shortages and exterminate the Slavic population through starvation.[30] Mass shootings and gassing operations, carried out by the Nazis or willing collaborators,[e] murdered over a million Soviet Jews as part of the Holocaust.[32] The failure of Operation Barbarossa reversed the fortunes of Nazi Germany.[33] Operationally, German forces achieved significant victories and occupied some of the most important economic areas of the Soviet Union (mainly in Ukraine) and inflicted, as well as sustained, heavy casualties. Despite these early successes, the German offensive stalled in the Battle of Moscow at the end of 1941, and the subsequent Soviet winter counteroffensive pushed the Germans about 250 km (160 mi) back. The Germans had confidently expected a quick collapse of Soviet resistance as in Poland, but the Red Army absorbed the German Wehrmacht's strongest blows and bogged it down in a war of attrition for which the Germans were unprepared. The Wehrmacht's diminished forces could no longer attack along the entire Eastern Front, and subsequent operations to retake the initiative and drive deep into Soviet territory-such as Case Blue in 1942 and Operation Citadel in 1943-eventually failed, which resulted in the Wehrmacht's defeat.
