Lyrics
Floating on mist
Crept up the caverns of my brain
Received no warning
From nothing to a life code
Walk with me, you'll never leave
Wait to see your spirit free
Tell me how your heart's in need
As I drown you in the sea
Unwinding snares of distrust
Your wrist in my fast grip
Look me in the eye, I'm clear
This is your time
Face down beneath the waterline
Gazing into the deep
From love to death
In a time span of seconds
Oblivious to regret
Pushed into belief
In liquid cellophane
Gasping for air
Mercy in my eyes
Is the shade of the night
The piercing sounds you make
Soaring higher, higher now
And once left in my wake
Your memory is nothing but the scars on me
All over now
Forgotten why I needed this
Standing down
Disappear into the obscure
Resting days
Waiting for new disease
Biding time
Locked inside insanity
It always burns within
The downward spiral never ends
When driven into sin
Your salvation's found in a sinner's deed
The devil guides the way
Tells me what to say
Pours himself inside
And snuffs the final light
Deliverance
Thrown back at me
Deliverance
Laughing at me

I have no idea who the fuck Opeth are, I've never listened to them and this just showed up on Autoplay after a concert from Zeal & Ardor. But holy fuck, this is amazing. Top recording quality, the vocalist just makes me smile, and their sound is elegantly badass, fucking amazing. Drumming, guitar, bass, they're all on-point and accurate. The frontman has a great growl AND voice. Fucking awesome. Edit: six months after writing this comment, I'm a huge Opeth fan. I'm late to the party, but they are seriously one of the most skilled bands I've ever seen.

Let's all agree that Martin Lopez was key to Opeth in their prime. Those drums tell a story when he plays. Perfect combination of talent and emotion. Does he get enough recognition? I don't know. But he's bloody brilliant.

Their most recent tour Mikael always wore is awesome hat (as I’m sure we all know). When they came out for the encore he wasn’t wearing it, so people were shouting “where’s the hat?!” His response was that he maybe we wanted to headbang to the next song, he then demanded silence so he could bleed the intro in. Then in cams the light show and that amazing opening riff. It was bliss

It wasn't lopez, it's just that they were still a metal band and not a prog band (I like both tbh), but if i have to be honest Axe is soooo much better of a drummer in every way than lopez. Just consider that the studio version of deliverance is 14 mins long and this version barely gets to 11 minutes. Lopez doesn't even speed up the whole song and keeps slowing down and speeding up.

Over the past 4 or 5 years Opeth has become my 2nd all time favorite band of any music genre. There is something strangely relaxing about their music, almost ASMR like. I've dozed off to My Arms, Your Hearse a few times, and Orchid gives me an out of body feelin. There is not a single waisted note in their songs, nor is there a single filler track on any of their albums. Mikael has such a ferocious vocal distortion, but yet his singing is graceful, and he speaks with such a deep and somber tone. Opeth is that band that very few bands are: an experience

Almost 2 years ago, I was introduced to Opeth by a KZbinr who recommended them in a video which, to this day, I’m still trying to find, he recommended this song as a perfect song to show non metalheads how good metal can be, I was already into metal, you know, the more traditional stuff like Megadeth and Slipknot, but when I first listened to that intro, it took me like a week to get passed those first seconds, once I did, I listened to the whole song, and it changed my world, you wouldn’t expect someone who is just getting into metal to listen to Opeth as one of their first couple of bands, but you know what? Fucking worth it, to this day, they still are my favorite band of all time, there’s just one artist that I like as much, and that’s Zappa, but apart from him, few bands have made such an impact in my life, long live to Opeth!!!! And long live to one of the greatest guitarists alive, Mikael Akerdfelt!!!!!

Gotta say, I'm a hardcore Opeth fan and love ALL their records (Sorceress is amazing). But it's impossible to deny that THIS is Opeth at its peak in every level: performance, composition and specially line-up (Lopez will be remembered as THE drummer for the band even though Soen is his band now. No disrespect to it). As a matter of fact whenever someone asks me where to start with the band I refer them to this dvd.

Meshuggapeth Fredrik, maybe. Axe, nope. He is a human metronome, but Lopez was a drummer. I compare this version to the Wacken 2015 version, and damn... Even giving Mikael's growls a pass, it lacks the energy and adrenaline that Lopez gave it. 10 years later, I still think Lopez was better than Axe...
@Meshuggapeth
@Meshuggapeth 6 жыл бұрын
branlopgar Lopez was great, but he couldn’t have pulled off some of the newer Opeth fan favorites like “The Devil’s Orchard” or “A Fleeting Glance”. Axe’s drumming is hypnotic and brutal at the same time, adding new styles and sounds to Opeth’s texture . Lopez does though deserve credit for adding heaviness to Opeth’s sound beginning on My Arms, Your Hearse. His playing on the Deliverance/Damnation and Ghost Reveries albums deserve widespread recognition for they worked so well with Opeth’s style, especially when mixed in with Mendez’s excellent bass playing

Lopez' biggest contribution to Opeth was to add the jazzy feel of the drums. That was him. Axe never had the jazz feel and groove that Lopez has.

The only other death metal band I like besides opeth is dethklok, you should listen to dethalbum 1. After one million times watching this performance I finally realize that they actually skipped one part at the end because in the studio version they play that last epic pattern part 3 times with Mikael playing that sinister riff and then they play for the last time both guitarists that pattern. And here they play twice before going to the last part. Anyway, I could watch the last 3minutes until the end of times.

SKIRSDAG The guitar isn't hard in a traditional way (Shredding, fast riffing) but it's hard in the way that Opeth write their chord voicings and how they articulate their riffs. You could play the same riff without mute string chugs or slipping in the off open string chug and it just wouldn't sound right. The vocals are also ridiculously good and I've yet to see someone recreate them exactly, the bass lines are quite held back but without them the music would fall apart and the drums are just fucking insane.

I really like Lopez's choice of tempo throughout this gig. He increases it in certain parts where it contributes nicely to the intensity of the song, while in other parts he actually slows down the tempo compared to the studio recording - for example, the opening riff in Masters Apprentices feels much chunkier while most of A Fair Judgment feels more profoundly sentimental. In both cases these slight adjustments improve the songs IMO, to the extent that I don't even listen to the studio versions of these tracks anymore
