“Are they a big band?” They’re as big as a metal band can get without crossing over into “mainstream.” That’s my take, anyway. They’re certainly mainstream in the metal world. Every one knows about them. They’re not some undiscovered or underground Norwegian black metal band only the nerdiest of metal nerds know about. They’re extremely well known.

@Adax ! They always have been progressive! On the first records the death metal influences are just way more represented than now :D For me from 'Orchid', 'Morningrise' and 'My Arms Your Hearse' they have been a progressive Black Metal band. But from Still Life until Watershed they started to be more Death than Black Metal. But its always been so damn progressive!

Opeth - a drummers' wet dream! And other instrumentalists' too. Opeth taught me to like hard vocals. It isn't the basis of their music, but more of a effect, an artistic tool. I'm glad you chose the album version. I guess it's Blackwater Park or Porcelain Heart next. And about the popularity of pop music: A million flies are right - shit is good.

Yes, the drummer in this song Martin Lopez, has been a huge influence for me he's really good and made some beautiful rythmics in those older albums (prior to The Lotus Eater) He now plays in Soen tho much less death metal style in his play in that band. You should still try a song from The Blackwater Park like the Drappery falls, Lepper Affinity

Absolute masterpiece indeed! And it only gets better with age :) Besides that I totally agree with comments about pop music being fed to people through radio and TV. My feeling is that the average person haven't ever taken their time to explore various artists within various genres of music, and hence are only conditioned for the superficial, primitive and poppy sound bites that the pop industry churns out. I've been frustratingly ranting about this for years myself, because it is sad. People are missing out and are almost indirectly groomed to dislike anything that deviates, so that their idea of quality is based on if it's something they've heard before.

I very much respect how you can acknowledge songs for their musicianship. I mean, you called this song a masterpiece, in spite of the fact that you found the lyrics to be silly. I like how your enjoyment of a song isn't contingent primarily on lyrical content, but you still appreciate it when necessary. A lot of other reaction channels tend to focus too much on lyrics, and unfortunately neglect the technical ability of the musicians. Keep doing what you're doing. P.S. You'll find several masterpieces reacting to Tool and Opeth. Two of my Top 5 all time.

Opeth is amazing! Such a good song! You should check out their newer stuff! The Sorcess live at Red Rock is amazing! Their newer stuff is more prog metal with no growls. Just Mikael's angelic voice lol. That's what's dope about Opeth. If you want to listen to their harder stuff, you can and if you want their more slower stuff, it's there, too! A truly talented band! For sure!!! I also wanted to say that your heart felt reaction to genuine art and music was very refreshing to hear. There's so much good music out there and people settle now a days for the commercialized and regurgitation that's being played, rather than appreciating actual art and music that speaks to the soul. And not just some talentless band just in it to make money and have no real substance! So right on! Lol

Opeth is just out of this world, really. From "My Arms, Your Hearse" all the way up to "Watershed" those are six, SIX 5/5 albums imo (7 if you count Deliverance and Damnation as separate albums). It's insane how consistently crazy good their discography managed to turn out for so long. Heritage was a bit too "strange" to me, but then Pale Communion came and BOOM, another 5/5. Anyway, love them so much, hope you react to stuff from My Arms and Still Life, reactors tend to neglet those masterpieces in favor of Blackwater Park onwards songs, which is a shame. Peace, Jim! :)

Wasn't properly introduced to Opeth until a couple of years ago but has since seen them live three times. Loved it every time! In my ears Mikael Åkerfeldt is a genius and with that kind of band behind him there can be only perfection. One of my favourite Opeth songs is "The Devil's Orchard" which I can recommend giving a listen! Mikael himself has also done a really good collabroation with Vegard "Ihsahn" Tveitan (of Emperor) called "Unhealer" that's worth a listen aswell.

Jim Newstead. Hey with Opeth....the singer switches from clean tone vocals to the growling vocals so he does not fuck up his voice when he is on tour. Glad you picked these guys.

Bigger in Europe than in the states ( like most prog). Opeth are huge in the genre, and have influenced everyone from Steven Wilson ( and vice versa) Riverside, Katatonia, Ne Obliviscaris....can go on and on...of the " newer" albums, I like Pale Communion the best, though I like them all. By the way the Blackwater Park album was produced by SW and he is featured on the song "Bleak"

I absolutely loved your conclusion and it's great to see you discover the different facets of rock and metal. Watching you makes me remember that I felt the same when I first started listening to Opeth :-D They are definitely amazing. For another masterpiece that includes all their different styles, I suggest: "Hessian Peel". For an extremely melodic Opeth-song, go for "Burden" (no growling). The last 3 albums they stopped doing metal and went for progressive rock, check out their album "Pale Communion", it's insanely good! Cheers and thanks for the reactions! You seem like a really cool guy! Cheers from Germany

As to big band. They are phenomenal. The songs are genius. Yet they also take some training of ear to truly appreciate. Most people if they listened to a song here and there for a couple of weeks would likely fall in love with them. They are truly one of my favorite bands and I kind of stumbled upon them by accident and had a big playlist of them running in the background while I was doing some PnP role playing with my family and friends and at some point the music just fit everything we were doing and I was thinking "Hold on, who are these guys?" Definitely one of my favorite bands now. Challenge... very different vocals. Check out Arch/Matheos - Neurotically Wired. Many people will HATE the vocalist John Arch in that but damn that song is brilliant and he is another one of those that if you hear for awhile grows on you. Very unique and brilliant. You might also be the only person to react to them if you did it. ;)

21:04 "This isn't music for casual listening... This is proper music to properly listen to, and to properly absorb and love." (Jim Newstead, 2018) For me, this alone is reason enough to come back and listen to Jim's analogy again and again. Very well-put.

I'll write again before I listen to your final words : this is the first song I ever heard of Opeth and until today it's in my Top 5, even though I know the whole catalogue from album #1 up to In Cauda Venenum. And Ghost Reveries is my favourite album. If somebody asks you what is Opeth, you can play this song, it has everything, which defines Opeth : great composition, great musicians and all 3 of Mikael's voices - angelic - strong - growls. I've seen Opeth live 3 times and was always impressed and some songs can even become earworms. After the first concert for example I had the music of Deliverance "in my ear" for several days ... but also the soft parts of Ghost of perdition are very catchy, don't listen too often ... you find yourself singing these parts ... 🤣🤘

Great reaction/review Jim. I think you’re right that it’s fear that keeps people away from great music - fear of novelty which goes hand in hand with a fear of difference, fear of a challenging listening experience and fear of liking something that others may perceive as making you an outsider if you enjoy it. Humans are silly.

one of my favs. and people don't gravitate towards this genre because of the stigma of it initially then because there's too much too it; I think some people need that 'conditioning' you spoke of but I know I didn't; I was drawn to it immediately. Just subscribed and love your reactions, man. Great to see people get into a lot of this music, and how certain things have grown on you over time ! Based on your love for the more progressive metal (which is why I'm posting this on an Opeth video!) I think I have some suggestions for bands you could react to, and I'll be going for some Norwegian metal bands here: Enslaved - Nauthir Bleeding, from In Times A band who has developed in a similar way to Opeth really. Started out in the Norwegian Black Metal scene in the early 90s with a fascination for Viking stuff (where Opeth was more medieval and fairytale-y), and although they still carry this with them, has grown more and more progressive since. Marvellous musicianship, great songs and have quite a few albums in their catalog by now! Arcturus - Ad Absurdum, from The Sham Mirrors A band that quickly moved away from their Black Metal roots, into theatrically avant-garde and progressive territory. Brilliant vocals and cold space-like atmosphere on this one! Solefald - Christiania (Edvard Munch Commemoration) from In Harmonia Universali An eclectic duo, Solefald are highly skilled multi-instrumentalist tricksters where one works in media and the other is a published author and poet with degrees in philosophy, which results in lyrics sung in English, Norwegian, German, French… and they write concept albums with pop culture and world event references. In this case its good old Edvard Munch (Norwegian lyrics from him) that heard Death speaking (in French, obviously). Cheers

Are they a big band??? Mikael the lead singer had (I say had because he don’t really growl anymore) the most demonic grown in my opinion the greatest growler off all time.. but he’s clean singing he has the most melodic voices he’s literally the meaning of “can sing you too sleep, and scare you to death” one of the greatest bands of all time but criminally underrated!!!

I think by now most people have answered but yeah Opeth is big for underground parameters...obviously not popular like Metallica & Slipknot. But when you're talking about Progressive Metal they are alongside Dream Theater the fathers of the genre and highly influential especially in extreme progressive metal. Pretty much every single band in the 2000's who play extreme metal try to copy them and respect them. I don't think you can be bigger than that in the prog world. They are like King Crimson in Prog Rock, people outside the genre don't know about them but inside the genre they are the ones people look up to and try to imitate. Please it's been a long time since you haven't done more..so try Opeth - "Burden". I think you answered your question about why these bands are not popular...people are not fan of exploring new stuff and if it's extreme music people won't give it a shot.
