I guess the message is please seek help when you feel sad and alone. Otherwise you will develop unhealthy coping mechanisms like the protagonist of this video. Especially after a break up.

There's that, but I also feel it's more making a comment on how possessiveness in relationships is unhealthy. The main character tries to keep his love from leaving, he keeps her hand, he has all her personal effects, which is how he manages makes a marionette of her using her own hair. In his fantasy play with the marionette version of her, he is literally controlling her every move and even chains her to keep her from leaving. Fun fact, the official term to refer to the puppeteer that controls marionettes is called a "manipulator." And despite him trying to control her doll-form, she still leaves. In short: he wanted her more as an inanimate object to possess, than as a person to freely love.

I just can't believe this song. This song is one of the best Opeth ever wrote; with its album it is a current classic that will forever be appreciated as some of the best humanity has to offer. It's amazing how Mikael's singing ability evolved over the years to become one of the best singers around. I just wish I understood the lyrics 🤣 I'm gonna learn Swedish!

I feel that way throughout the album. It's clear that the melodies were created for Swedish language first and then rewritten in English which has a different flow to the words.

Well, even Opeth fans love them for complex songwriting, deep growls etc but there're very few people who feel them the way they are supposed to be and thats beyond tiny cultures like rock metal prog. it has to offer way more than any of those genres. @@samswales9280 I know and I have both; but not everything is a literal translation, so there's no real way of knowing if what he sings in the Swedish one is really a pure translation of his words in English or not.

@@opeth Yeah, I know, he told me so when I asked him during the interview that I did with him in Dusseldorf in July :) That makes complete sense, as word by word translations often don't really work. And that's exactly the reason why I want to get my hands on the missing lyrics in the Swedish version. I even sent Mike an e-mail asking for the missing lyrics .. but he probably has better things to do than read/answer fan-mail all day long :D Cheers for the reply though, Jasper!

This song is soooo awesome I'm your fan from 2010 and this one is full of feelings. I love it. always waiting for more thank you for this gift so much love and respect there is no other band in it. This song has probably the best Swedish lyrics I've ever read and listened to, I feel pretty much everything Mikael wrote about here. It's deceptively simple and yet overwhelmingly profound when you can relate to each and every word. No truth is everyone's, but this one is exceedingly close to my own I guess.
