The main character is kind of banished from his hometown because he hasn’t got the same [Christian] faith as the rest of the inhabitants there. The album pretty much starts off when he is returning after several years to hook up with his old ‘babe’. Obviously a lot of bad things start happening with, as I call it on the album, ‘the council’. The big bosses of the town know that he’s back. A lot of bad things start happening. - Mikael Åkerfeldt

The transition at 7:48 is the best and smoothest transition that I've ever heard. The way that they fade out distorted rhythm guitars, leaving the lead one but reducing its volume, changing melody starting from the ending note of the previous melody but leaving the same acoustic guitars riff that they have been playing since the previous section creates a beautiful coerence, which in my opinion is something to consider when composing very long songs. This album in my opinion is their peak in terms of songs structure.

@cookiesontoast9981
@cookiesontoast9981 Жыл бұрын
I mean, I love Opeth to bits but there are a lot of other DM bands that are more representative of what DM typically is than something atmospheric and proggy like Opeth. For gateway/first DM band stuff I mean. Not to mention the vocals that resemble Black Metal or Blackened Death more than regular Death.
@blackbeltjones2903
@blackbeltjones2903 Жыл бұрын
@@cookiesontoast9981 but it's that atmospheric/ proggy sound typified especially by the acoustic bits (and clean singing of course) that eased the path into the heavier sections of their songs for me. That's exactly what I think can soften the blow of DM for a new listener. As opposed to an all out, frenetic assault like early cannibal corpse (which newcomers might find themselves drawn to given that they're probably the most recognizable name in the genre). Mind you, I was already listening to metalcore and mathcore like DEP and Converge at the time, but DM is heavy in its own extreme way. I get what you're saying though. Others could rightfully consider Death or Bolt Thrower better gateway bands.

@@blackbeltjones2903 interesting, in my case I came from power metal bands like powerwolf, then I really started liking prog PM like angra and symphony X, which then made me fall in love with prog in general like dream theater and opeth, I feel like progressive metal has a lot of intellect put in the composition, similar to classical music

Man, Serenity Painted Death has to be one of the best Opeth songs of all time!! It's the song that made me discover them back in 99'. My mom had brought the her old PC from work to her room I remember. I immediately used Napster and Limewire to start downloading metal-I can still remember the excitement of downloading music for free- and Opeth came up on my search and that song was listed. When I heard it I was hooked right there. I Remember using a LASONIC boombox to record it from the PC's speakers directly onto a cassette...let me tell you, I wore off that tape in just a year! This is imo the best Opeth Album You can hear stuff from Morning rise and MAYH but also later stuff they did on BWP , Deliverance/Damnation And the atmosphere is just on point The writing as well is peak level with amazing and memorable riffs and melodies and balance between the Soft and Heavy Parts None of the songs are weak all of them stand up on their own and have something memorable to them The heavy riffs on Face of Melinda and Serenity Painted Death The melancholy on Moonlapse Vertigo and Benighted and speaking of Benighted...the intro holy balls

The best way to up your ante is always to simply enter the dragon, and persistently transcribe/practice/rerecord every part verbatim, of whatever stuff you really like. You'll then at least have a reference point to work with, as far as knowing the amount of work needed to achieve YOUR standards.

Eh. I don't agree. King is a pretty pop writer, you know what I mean? His books are not nearly as unique. (This is not an attack on Stephen King or his fans, I do myself enjoy some of his books. But I believe that what Mikael has done musically is far better and important than King's novels are for literature).

For me this album is a masterpiece. I was obsessed with My Arms, Your Hearse when this was released and I remember how perfect this seemed that first day I got it. Now, many years later, its still in a league of its own. Its not even my favorite Opeth album, but as an entire album this is perfection. Even though I would never compare Opeth to a band like freakin Metallica, this album kind of has that classic masterpiece effect that Master of Puppets has. You just have to listen and wish you had been creative enough to write and produce it.

+Svarog Thanks, but that's all old news for me. It was definitely interesting to hear at least. However, you can't make a proper mix without being able to access the individual tracks, which would allow you to either MUTE the original bass you are replacing (and then remixing the other tracks around a newly-recorded bass track), or to simply TURN UP the original bass track. I commend the people who did whatever they could do, despite there not being the ideal situation I described--They mostly did everything they could do. The only major thing that could have been better would have been to have it all done by one person, so that the quality would at least be consistent on each of the tunes (instead of it being a collection of random people, each with their own approach for the bass enhancements). I can't recall which ones they were, but I definitely remember some of the tunes not being performed and/or mixed as well as others. No matter what people do though, it can't be perfect.

Cr8Tron This guy makes the best ones, he's found the original bass tracks for some tracks, and some anonymous ones for the missing ones. What? Of course they are, why would you say that? Mike Portnoy and Mikael Akerfeldt certainly think they are. Mikael Akerfeldt has been a huge Dream Theater fan since Images and Words came out and he saw the Pull Me Under video for the first time. Words straight out of his mouth, "I think we sound the way we do much thanks to you guys. And I've bought every album since, what can I say I'm a massive fan." That is, more or less, word for word what Akerfeldt said to Mike Portnoy. You should watch their interview together for some insight.
