It's beautiful because you get to "hear" from everyone in the band instead of noise around the lead singer. There are some bands that I like which tend to have the mixing done so it's difficult to hear those lovely details, even though the instrument has a potent addition when you can catch it. The arrangements for Opeth seem to be such that everyone's input is put on display for appreciation.

I purchased this album when it came out; and felt this fits their songwriting much better than the death metal approach, which I love, but they fit this atmosphere so well, they outdid any of their DM albums (for DM I'd rather hear Morbid Angel or Autopsy than 8 drawn out minutes of Opeth). This one really touched me....

A lot of songwriters don't put narrative meaning in their songs, they simply choose words that sound right while singing in the context of musical composition. It's more about invoking certain feelings than telling a cohesive story. People asked Mikael what is his songs are about and he said that he don't know and that, most certainly, is not a joke.
