I listened again. The study was for 12 months and a 4% improvement in spine and 6% improvement in hip. Every 2 years I have a Dexascan. In that period of time the last one I decreased by 3% in the spine. So that is what my Dr. is looking at. I'd be happy with a 4% increase. Very happy.

I am paying up for the (mentioned, studied) collagen with clinically-tested, supposedly shown to increase bone Fortigel and a few other patented types. Maybe it’s snake oil but I will be watching my body composition scale. So far the tiny decreases I was seeing when I started losing weight have stopped so that’s something, but I also started an Algae-Cal dupe and strontium (recommended level, not too much and away from calcium) and strength class at the Y in addition to 10k steps / day with a “heel smack.”

Excellent analysis. Helped me understand the role of collagen and how the body uses it. I started taking the bovine type thinking it would help improve bone density but now see that I can tweak my animal protein intake for the same benefits. I did find that my hair and nails improved noticeably so I will continue to take it just as another protein source rather than thinking that collagen specifically is making any difference. I now see why you advocate such a strong protein intake (which I struggle to achieve, but I’m getting there). Thank you for this straightforward presentation.

Fortibone is a "scam" not in the way that it does not work, in the way that Gelita pretends that they identified some specific bone targeting bioactiv peptides. Not the case otherwise they would have patented the enzymatic process to produce these peptides and identified clearley the amino sequence. Gelita is bulls...ing everybody with their peptides. Peptan is far less expensive and was on the market for much longer. Having said that collagen is an excellent supp.

Dr Doug- great video I’m curious if you looked into the difference between collagen products like Fortibone, and the general stuff you get at Costco or health food stores. Most sources I’ve read state that the bioavailability of collagen is much greater with the lower the molecular weight is. The Fortibone brand has a MW of 5000 daltons, whereas most of the stuff you buy commercially is up as high as 45,000 daltons. I’m currently taking a product that has a MW of 3000 daltons. Also - I’m a little skeptical about the idea that consuming collagen is no different than consuming a quality protein or amino acid supplement, because it all gets broken down into amino acids anyway so there’s no difference. If that were absolutely true, then why do so many people notice a definite improvement in skin/hair/nails when adding collagen to their diet, assuming of course they have adequate protein intake to begin with? If adding collagen improves those other things more than just consuming other forms of protein, I don’t think it would be crazy to assume it could also help your bones as well

Looking at a person holistically with osteopenia and a removed thyroid with eGfr of 56, what impact will food have on improving all three, as I see it, what is good for one condition is not good for another. Very difficult to balance it out.
@Dr_DougLucas Жыл бұрын
A protein forward diet should not negatively impact mild kidney disease but if your doctor has placed you on restriction than please follow that. A low inflammatory diet should improve all three.

Nice! I hope that works for you. I use grounding sheets as well and walk barefoot regularly. I don't think there is any evidence for grounding and OP specifically but I'll have my team do some research.

Thanks much Dr. appreciate your insights, I would like to know how to reverse osteoporosis, since I hear you have a free seminal, why don't you just do it in a video, so many millions given the bad news but other than avoiding ETOH, cig, and doing Vit D, ? dietary Ca, Mg, wt training, walking , what else can one do without meds which are all controversial, or is there one that actually worth taking?

Could you suggest exercises for someone who hasn't been exercising for years. I had a knee replacement, develop lymphedema in that leg and finally broke that leg in a fall. I get around in a walker. How do I begin working toward doing weight bearing exercises? g

Hi Terry, These have to start very basic. I recommend working with a physical therapist or trainer to optimize movement for you at this point.

Even in Switzerland I can only find a few products containing the Fortibone from Gelita , very hard to get. It is also costly approximately, 85-100 Swiss Francs per month. I have used the following products : CH Alpha Osteo, Osteoligan from Bellapur, OsteoLoges. Gelita also makes a beauty collagen powder called Verisol which claims to be different to other collagen powder because ti is active- not sure if this make a huge difference. Now that you have reviewed the lack lustre study it may make more sense to concentrate on strength training vs these supplement powders all things being considered. I have never had a bone scan as I am younger than the recommendations but both my mother and grandmother had osteoperosis/osteopenia so I was trying to get a head start on the saving my bones as much as possible. Do you have to build muscles in order to build better bones? Although I lift weights with a personal trainer I have not noticed bigger muscles, just more definition i but I wonder if that is because I would need to eat in a pretty big calorie surplus to increase muscle size and therefore have an impact on my bones?

I have big G.I issues and do not tolerate vitamin c even the calcium ascorbate except in very small doses. I also do not tolerate collagen supplements or bone broth. Also, I have had to decrease the fruit and vegetables I eat.Thus, I am worried that I am not getting enough C. My osteoporosis is getting worse so have started Prolio. I have often wondered if I can get Vitamin c into my body by soaking my feet in a Vitamin C bath as I often do with epsom salts and have started doing these Vitamin C soaks. I cannot find any research on this question but I would think this would be a fairly easy study to undertake? Any thoughts?
@Dr_DougLucas Жыл бұрын
Could be done but who would do it? No money to be made on vitamin C soaks. I would have my gut health team dig deep into your gut issues to see if we could improve function rather than looking for alternatives.

But then why did they make me drink a nasty collagen supplement in rehab, after multiple broken bones from a car accident? I am taking a grass fed collagen product now. More for skin and joint support. Waste of money?
@Dr_DougLucas Жыл бұрын
Waste of money is relative to resources. There is probably benefit for skin, hair and nails but the literature does not show that it supports bone health. We do slow in collagen production as we age. So, replacing fits with anti-aging protocols BUT does it make the top ten list? Maybe…

Is it true creatine and turmeric are good for rebuilding bones? If so, how much?
@Dr_DougLucas Жыл бұрын
I haven't seen studies on these specifically for bone health BUT creatine is great for muscles and therefore indirectly will impact bones. Turmeric is anti-inflammatory which is good for bones. How much? Standard dosing for creatine is 5g/day. Some people take less and people with kidney disease should ask their doctor first. Turmeric dosing is all over the map. It depends on the form, quality etc.
