to be fair, in IDW 2005-2018, Ironhide #1 (the issue is from memory, apologies if its incorrect.) Axer drew a handgun from his Thigh. as such, assuming that the Axe is retractile, its plausible that it is stored in his thigh, forearm, or even back.
