The Orangewood represents a very decent guitar for those on a limited budget, or those who simply refuse to pay Guild money. The world needs inexpensive guitars. Without them, we have a lot less guitar players. As to the sound comparison, the Guild wins. No contest.

It's debatable how many cheap guitars the world actually need. However, what the world absolutely need, is to stop supporting regimes such as the Chinese. Cost and value is not always measured in money. American made Guild guitars are not cheep, but they offer an insane value compared to what they cost. Get yourself a second hand guitar and start saving up. ;)

For the "money" the orangewood is pretty darn good. I'd take the guild anyway myself for the richness and quality! The OW is a deal for that price, compared that to other 200.00 guitars which typically sound tinny and weak.

Orangewood is doing a 20% off sale right now, 11/30, and actually have been since Black Friday. The Oliver Mahogany and Oliver Mahogany Jr. are $156 today. The Oliver Mahogany Live is $220 today. I just recently purchased a Brooklyn for $295. Today they're asking $236. The set up, for me anyway, was great. Being a beginner/intermediate player, I'm really glad I was able to find this company. By the way, no shipping costs, so what you see is what you get.

Your videos are GREAT and YOU are charming. I have a brand new Oliver Live. It is indeed tight as a tick. The volume is not there, you are right. I hope it will "open up" over time. But it's my first "grand concert" aka OM guitar, all my other acoustics are dreads. My Yamaha FG730S dread is also a solid top but sitka spruce and dreads are louder than OM's but the Yamaha blows it across the room in volume and resonance and bass but it is ALSO over 22 years old and has Elixirs! Makes a difference. I haven't changed the strings on the Oliver from the Ernie Ball communist strings they came with as I'm waiting for bone pins for it, I suspect different strings and the bone pins will make a noticeable difference. That said, the Orangewood price is amazing, got it on a 2023 holiday sale for $250 to my door for a solid top all mahogany with a good pickup is a steal. Plugged in volume is unlimited of course and the Oliver has a VERY good pickup which sounds really good, none of my Yamaha's came with a pickup. The Oliver does resonate very well especially when VERY precisely tuned and the bridge WAS intonated pretty close when I pulled it out of the soft case and hilariously the guy who did it looked like he used a pocket knife to remove material from the saddle but it IS pretty close out of the box which CANNOT be said for other guitar makers. My only REAL complaint is the tuners. They DO NOT turn smoothly, notch notch notch, they are driving me crazy. They need oil being run in or something, they are NOT good as is. And the I think the first fret is high, will file it when I change the strings. Right now with the truss rod adjusted so the neck is as flat as I can make it when not under string tension the string heights at 12th fret bass E is between .06 and .07 and high E is .06 which I like a lot. So there is some room for improvement overall but quite OK as is right now. A new solid top spruce dread Yamaha like an FG800 might be more of a boomer for even a cheaper price but no pickup and it is bigger. That said, my Recording King RD-318 dread Martin D-18 copy is in another galaxy, a completely different guitar from the Oliver, literally a guitar piano that makes me cry at times, but it retails for at least double $250, grab a lightly used RD-318 for a REAL bargain.

Well Jer ..... all I can say is .... i think you're spot on regarding Every point you made about each guitar. Especially the simple science facts about how the properties of hardened glue changed the way the laminate reacts to sound vibrations . Soooo spot on Jer . You also made an awesome point about how a person interacts with the guitar , such as where you play on the strings , and how a player manipulates the sound the guitar is able to produce ..... i totally got it about how the Orangewood ( as much as i like it ) limits you in the sound you can produce . I have a Martin OOO 15 M that i bought privately . Even though it needs a neck reset quite badly for the most part , it still sounds better than most others that I've been playing in the last half a year . That is why i feel it is worth putting out the money for a neck reset. Would i swap it for an Orangewood... no ... because it is a model i have aways wanted . That being said ... there is a place and purpose for an Orangewood any day . Would love to have an Orangewood 12 string natural , non cutaway with no electronics . I Always respect your views in your vids ... they broaden my knowledge of acoustic guitars .

The Guild is definitely better. It's a lot crisper... individual notes and as much or better base than the Orange which sounds muddy with respect to bottom sounds. I have an older Orange and I bought another Guild about 2 years ago for $500 with a spruce top and a decent hard soft bag. It was the only guitar that is 25 guitars in that price range that sounded good to me. I turned it down a "D" in standard and it still sounds good and did not buzz. However it was made in China. In 1969 I bought a Hoboken Guild F30 that plays like a dream... very low actions. I was going through a very hard time and I really regret selling it in 1994... most regrettable for sure. Hurricane Andrew, a bad T-bone car crash when a woman ran a red light and almost killed me... you know how it goes.

I also have a 2009 model Guild F50 (rosewood) that is terribly rich in sound and projects second to none. I also bought an Eastman DT30GACE double top grand auditorium. There is no comparison between solid tonewood back and sides for sure. Orangewood and Epiphone (AJ220S is what I have) are both good options for a beginner or a player on a budget. My limit is 4 guitars, though If looking for a warm, rich, full tone, a small-body is not the way to go, in my opinion.

To me it feels like comparison between Parlour and a 000 or OM style guitar, more than a comparison between brands. How do they sound plugged in PA system ?

Listened to this review via nice sounding speakers. Not knocking the Orange Wood at all. Sounds & looks great for that price. Wonderful for a beginner or for a camp / beach/ open mic guitar. However, (of these two).....the Guild M-20 wins hands down , IMO.

That's a nice Guild you have, Jeremy. I recently got my first small sized acoustic--one of the new PRS parlor guitars. I love playing it. So different from all my dreadnoughts. It has a cool story too. You should compare it to these two. It sits in the middle price-wise.

You should hear a tricked out Oliver. Tusq saddle, Adarrio O-Port, Ernie Ball Earthwood Brass .010’s, string height .080-.085 at 12 fret low E, and brass pins. Even 2xs better! Rings forever…Throw some K&K pickups and you really got a winner. This is a secret treasure that you would be very surprised.

I was amazed how the Orangewood's overall tone held up against the Guild. The Guild had almost a one dimensional presisionial feel to my ears while the Orangewood produced more of a three dimensional presentation of each chord you played. To me, I liked it more perhaps because the sustained tonality is longer allowing it to linger in the mix.

I bought an Orangewood Morgan Spruce Live almost a year ago. I didnt really like the way the neck felt right from the start but I kept it hoping I would change my mind. Its a tad wider and thicker than I would like to the point that it feels slow. The sound is ok....sorta.The tuners slip periodically . For the money I guess its ok. Just my 2 cents

I owned both of these guitars and I have to say I enjoy playing the Oliver much more than the Guild M20E. It's a tough comparison since the Oliver is so much larger and really projects more. To me, the Oliver is much more responsive to light strumming and has a very balanced voice. Another thing that bothers me about the Guild is poor intonation due mainly to the short scale length. It pulls the strings sharp because of the decreased tension on the strings. I feel like I have to work harder to get what want from the Guild. I bought the Guild online because I loved playing the mahogany Orangewood Oliver and thought that a Guild mahogany would be even better but I was sadly mistaken. I will be selling this Guild M20E because I just don't play it often. I'm going to stick to 000 style guitars and might even buy another Orangewood with Spruce top like the Ava model.

Better note separation with the Guild and less sustain.. which I like. I'm not running out to buy either one. Thanks for the comparison, Jeremy!

I'm glad you're not making rash decisions based on these videos, they are fun and entertaining but the slow approach is always best to guitar acquisition.

@@JeremySheppard Right on, Jeremy! I've done that far too often, but now have a pretty good idea of what guitars work for me and why. Such a fun journey!

Has anyone done a group test of all-solid all-mahogany guitars, such as the 000-15, Guild M20 and the new Furch OM-MM? Might be quite interesting to see. Furch is getting quite a bit of traction over here as they have all-solid guitars at fairly affordable prices from a western country.

Both sound great in their own respects but I did notice more buzzing on the Orangewood, which wouldn’t necessarily scare me away from it.

I am intrigued by Orangewood.. but I am also of the mind to hold on to that $200 and at the very least put it towards a Guild F-2512.. (I have a Martin DM to cover my 6 string needs) or Martin Standard Series..like a D35.

I have an Orangewood Rey mahogany, so I can relate to where you were going with this. To me, a much more accurate comparison would be a 000-15 Martin, as they are the same size body & scale length...

My main guitar is an 0-18 Martin, so comparing them would literally be apples to "oranges"! The Orangewood is a good guitar, but not a great guitar. I bought mine used, so I could actually play it first. For the money it is impressive and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend one to a beginner or student. They play well enough, and sound ok to get you to that next level. BTW I leave mine tuned to DADGAD, which is where it shines to me...

Jeremy, Would you like to review 'Power Pins'? Your Orangewood story is comparable to my Mahogany parlor Sigma 00M-15S + Recently I replaced the bridge pins with 'Power Pins' Bridge Pin Set V2 BK. Suddenly it gave more projection and deeper bass sounds and the volume got louder. The effect after mounting the 'Power Pins' has a positive and negative side. It changes the timbre and sound character of the guitar. But, who cares if the end-result of a cheap guitar is 2x better ?! I look forward to your response.

The Oliver definitely sounds great for price, but Guild has a richness and presence that Orangewood lacks. That being said, I wish that beginner guitars as nice as the Oliver or Yamaha FG380, etc. would have been available when I was first starting to play.

To me they are night and day. Ive been wanting the m20 for quite some time. This video only further reinforces my opinion. The orangewood are above theyre value in general.

My laminate back and side D'Angelico has none of the problems that the orangewood had. The guild sounded so full and Woody. The the orangewood sounded so ...not. However I have heard higher end orangewood that doesn't have those problems. I'd hope that they don't have those feel issues. I'd be curious to hear how the top ages on the orangewood.

Don't make my mistake if you order from Orangewood look your guitar over. My action at the 1st fret was over .032'' because of that I didn't notice how close the high E was to the edge of the fretboard. After lower the action I can easily pull the E string off the fretboard.

Guild sounds a bit warmer and has richer tone. But Orangewood is in the ballpark. Have several Guilds but they have some cheek charging 1500 + for an M20. I did own one and loved it but didn't pay nearly that much. Not worth it to me but to each their own.
