This review is about the orbit travelling sprinkler 58322. I was looking for a good sprinkler that I wouldn't have to move around or worry about turning the water off in between uses or anything to be able to water a large yard and all I found was a bunch of junk sprinklers out there until I found the orbit travelling sprinkler and it is amazing! You can set whatever path you need by laying out the hose in the path you want it to follow and you can set it to spray between 15 and 55 feet all around it so it covers small and even large yards. It works with up to 200 feet of hose up to 13500 sq feet. It is built like a tank and very reliable being made of cast iron and the best part is the little stopper that you put where you want it to eventually stop because it shuts off the water for you so you aren't wasting water if you forget about it.
It is a completely self propelled sprinkler. In high gear, the sprinkler travels approximately 37 feet per hour and applies about ¼ inch of water. In low gear, the sprinkler travels approximately 21 feet per hour and applies about ½ inch of water. Set it to neutral to use it as a stationary sprinkler. it is the best of both worlds. If you don't want to invest thousands in a sprinkler system and a timer and all of that this works amazingly well.
I have to say that the sprinkler having automatic shutoff is the best feature of this.
If you are having a problem with your orbit sprinkler running backwards this video will teach you how to fix it. Or if you are having an issue with the arms of the orbit sprinkler coming off I will show you how to fix that.

I was so impressed with the video, I purchased 2. I’ve had at least 3 bad experiences so far. Each time it jumped the track (the hose). My worst experience so far came after I set it up to run during the night and I came out the next morning to find it off track and still spraying water. The yard was completely soaked! It sprayed all night long (9 hours). I still don’t know what’s causing it to do that.

It can be finicky with tall grass and a heavy hose. You're hose gets really heavy it is long and full of water. So if you make your lines too long or with tight turns then it can fall over from the weight of pulling the hose behind it. Try to use a light hose and I hope it works better for you.

I have an orbit tripod and that sucker is unreal. I have a little over an acre and in my front I put it right in the middle and have it spray in a 360 pattern and it almost overs the whole front yard. This thing would be great if it would be able to go back and forth. But as it is, for my yard this won’t be good enough. But for a small yard it would be great.

I have a u shape i need to cover very large side yard.. and wonder when you hook the hose up to the tractor, it needs to have that initial loop like yours to start on the track right? I am getting one! I have very good water pressure and if i put it on low/downward like yours, how many feet to each side does yours cover? How do you adjust the feet throw? I just saw that low/high switch? Thanks Joseph great video!

Thanks for your insight. I do have a question. When the tractor first starts it is watering behind the tractor once as well in front of the tractor when it stops. However, the rest of the area is getting watered twice once from in front of the tractor and again from behind the tractor. How do you address these areas being only once watered?

Are you related to Oppenheimer? ;) This is a mechanical, 18 pound, die cast sprinkler invented in the 1930’s. It is pretty neat for what it is, but it isn’t perfect. Yes, your slide rule lawn calculus is correct. There will be some grass at the beginning, and some at the other end that only gets half the water (but more water than it had before). The remaining 90% of the grass along the path traveled gets the full dose. In the 1930’s, their way of “addressing” this was to not worry about it.

As long as you don't have a super heavy duty hose or do it near the end. The "tractor" has to pull more and more the longer it goes. At the beginning it would be able to do it easily but near the end the weight of the hose would pull from the side and might knock it over.

I would assume it would work well because of how lightweight they are but then again since the stretch out when you turn on the water that might make it hard to make the path for the sprinkler.
