I cannot believe a representative from the Coast Guard was not at that meeting, absolutely inexcusable. I was stationed here in 99 and I can remember the Master Chiefs going to meetings.

Look to the watermen of the Cheseapeke , they can tell you first hand how fast the government will move to help ... this is the way though, exposure and public opinion , the more people that know the better your chances. Great series !! keep up the good work

I've fished on charters in Florida, NC, NY, and MD.... Without a doubt the folks that have taken us fishing from Oregon Inlet Fishing Center and other marinas on Hatteras Island were friendlier and more knowledgeable by far than any other with the exception of Rick Stanczyk out of Bud N Mary's in Islamaroda who was also very good at putting us on fish in the back country. The folks making a living around Oregon inlet are some of the best.

@@CXCVIDEO One of the best. Definitely taught me a thing or 10 (although it took a few years before I realized it). He's the only person I've ever heard dress down a Navy Captain and an E-2 using the exact same verbage and tone. (And got the same sheepish "yes Chief" from both) 🤣

Unfortunately, not 1 inlet in NC has jetties that I know of. Out of the top 15 worst and most dangerous inlets in the USA, NC has 4 of them. Oregon, Bogue, New River/ Topsail, and Carolina Beach/Cape Fear

Masonboro is jettied and so is Little River, though depending on what map or chart you look at Little River inlet is either completely in South Carolina or the state line runs between the jetties.

What organizations have been leading the jetty fight?
@nickh9632
@nickh9632 Жыл бұрын
@@CXCVIDEO not sure the actual organization but I know Camp Lejuene has been the major hold up because the Marine corp owns one side of the Inlet. North Topsail and the county commission have been involved too because of the North end erosion has gotten so bad houses have literally washed into the inlet. A lot of the trawlers head south for Cape Fear instead of running New River when it’s rough

100% fact we need a f-ing jetty, bottom line it will help if not fix it for ever! I swear i think they dont wznt it fixed because they dont want commercial fishing period!
@erichammond9308
@erichammond9308 Жыл бұрын
Actually it's the other states that want the fishing for themselves. Do you realize how many commercial fishing boats from VA, MD SC and pretty much everywhere else in the world fish off Cape Hatteras now? An open Oregon inlet would decimate their fishing income because of it's location. All of those boats would go to Wanchese to offload, refuel reprovision and those other states would LOSE their income from that. (Same goes for Hatteras and Ocracoke inlets too)

Could be part of the equation for sure! Thanks for watching!

@@erichammond9308 while that may be true to an extent , a harbor can only hold so many boats. Sure the harbor may get larger but that takes time. Who cares what other states think anyway , the ,way I see it , every state should take care of themselves and be independent and protect there own industries. Oh and certain species only live in certain ecosystems so even though it would make NC more famous for fishing in general to have a jetty , it still does not make fish that people can catch in other states, move to hatteras.

Easy fix. Sacrifice some money of boats and start “accidentally” hitting that nice bridge.

Two questions. How much would a jetty cost to build? Oh and how much in US tax dollars have been spent supplying Ukraine with American built weapons? A country that has refused to join NATO? Fix the dam inlet! I love it there.

Id really like to know why the pier fishing and surf fishing on the outer banks is so terrible..its become a joke..decades ago it was amazing to fish the outer banks..now horrible....what happened to the fishing...thats what the tourists want to do..or at least used to want to do..why would you go to the outer banks for vacation to catch scates....im sorry for these commercial fisherman but what about the fishing overall on the surf and piers...does anyone care about that on this video series..????......id bet they couldnt care less...!!!!

The fishermen have mentioned that jetties would be great for recreational fishing and will be covered in future episodes. That topic is complex and there are many factors to keep in mind. Thanks for watching!
@kayakrob
@kayakrob Жыл бұрын
The great debate between the commercial and recreational fishing is very difficult... that is the decline in the fisheries for the recreational fishermen. On the Chesapeake... the recreational fishermen are hit with the hardest of restrictions. I am sure the same can be said for example pertaining to the flounder fishing regulations in N.C. Just to clarify, I characterize recreational as the charter boats down to the surf fishermen etc. Commercial the trawlers down to the crabbers and oystermen. There has been a long standing debate about the Menhaden industry out of Reedville Virginia depleting the "feed" stock for the Chesapeake species. NOAA fisheries claim their is no impact to the menhaden population. Yet recreational fishermen tell a different story. www.sportfishingmag.com/news/anglers-conservationists-call-for-ban-chesapeake-bay-commercial-menbhaden-netting/ . The debate has been going on for a long time. As a recreational fisherman, it is easy for me to blame the commercial industry. On the other hand, I have seen recreational fishermen load up their limit.... go back to their cars, fill up their coolers, and motor back out to repeat the process. And numerous examples on the Maryland DNR violations report of "recreational" fishermen poach 100+ striped bass during the Spring spawn. Both the commercial fishermen, and the recreational, will for sure, say, "It used to be better." I do think the people, or at least the fishing community watching the videos care and feel the state of affairs. I think the author (Counter Current) is doing a great job of documenting and presenting to the public the history, life, and culture of the Outer Banks. Great work CXC. Keep up the good work !
